Passion by Peter Gabriel... I can't speak highly enough of it, it's hands down the best album I've ever heard... if you're thinking that you hated Sledgehammer or some of his other radio hits forget that, Passion is TOTALLY different... there are no words and it's all just ambience and cool rhythms and stuff... there is some singing, but no english words, and very few words in general... the voices are just another instrument in the music... Please though, I really think some people here would like this if they checked it out, and if you have heard it and like it well back me up here :)... lots of nice synths, and cool rhythms... and yes different world instruments, but that's cool...
here's some track suggestions even though it works best as a whole...
- Of These, Hope/Lazarus Raised/Of These, Hope - Reprise (three separate tracks, but really one song)
- A Different Drum - Zaar - With This Love - Stigmata - Passion - Wall of Breath - Disturbed - It is Accomplished
at least give a couple of these a listen... if you hate it, fine, but you might like it... just don't write it off without listening...
there, that's enough ranting about this!!! :)

Amazon.com essential recording
To call Passion a pivotal recording in the development of world music would be a significant understatement. What makes Passion so undeniably important is its global reach and expert handling of what could've easily become polyglot babble. Vocalists Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Youssou N'Dour, and Baaba Maal bring strong Middle Eastern and African voices to the project, and Balkan textures come via the ney flute and doudouk. But Gabriel is the glue, offering electronic ambient flows between the multiple streams. Gabriel also brings something even less tangible: an awesome visual imagination that takes often seamless sounds and makes them impress the listener with picturelike colors and phrasing. This is, however, far more than an ambient global mix. The intertwined rhythms stand out, both on their own and as brushstrokes on a larger canvas. Never mind that Passion helped launch North American careers for N'Dour and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan--this is a stellar musical achievement by any standard. --Andrew Bartlett
hehe, I just love this album so much I got to get some more people into it!!! :)

I saw Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan before he died at Montreal's Place Des Arts. It was honestly one of the best shows I've ever seen.
Part of the custom was for people to approach the singer and throw money in his general direction. For the encore he was just surrounded in a confetti of twenties and the crowd was so wild you could barely hear the music.

Peter Gabriel is the man... we study new media here in LA and Peter Gabriel was brought up because he was one of the first major music artists to avidly promote and use computer technology / graphics for his music videos ;]

thethirdball: yup, it most certainly is the soundtrack, but I've also read that Peter Gabriel started the project for the film yes, but released it as a something that would work by itself... meaning that I don't think all the music on the album was used in the picture, and that he put it together as an album... I haven't seen the movie though, and it does stand alone by itself...
Ross: Well I wouldn't say you'd automatically like it, because it's totally different from his vocal songs and stuff... I mean when I got the album it took me like half a year to really appreciate it, but I'd definitely recommend you get it... if you've heard Us you might be better prepared for it because Us does seem like a combo of So and Passion to a certain extent, but even Us is quite different from Passion itself... it's something you should really hear...
MrTenzin: Yes, Peter Gabriel is the man!!! He's one of my favorite artists, and I only have three albums of his, one of which is a greatest hits one... I really need to get his other albums...

from allmusic.com
Passion is in actuality Peter Gabriel's soundtrack to the Martin Scorsese film The Last Temptation of Christ, retitled as a result of legal barriers; regardless of its name, however, there's no mistaking the record's stirring power. Like much of Gabriel's solo work, the album is a product of his continuing fascination with world music, which he employs here to create an exceptionally beautiful and atmospheric tapestry of sound perfectly evocative of the film's resonant spiritual drama; inspired by field recordings collected in areas as diverse as Turkey, Senegal, and Egypt, Passion achieves a cumulative effect clearly Middle Eastern in origin, yet its brilliant fusion of ancient and modern musics ultimately transcends both geography and time. Remarkably dramatic, even visual, it is not only Gabriel's best film work but deserving of serious consideration as his finest music of any kind; equally worthwhile is Passion: Sources, which assembles the original native recordings which served as his creative launching pad. — Jason Ankeny

i don't like peter's vocals that much, but 'passion' is great... (the only track i don't like is 'with this love')
it has been largely used in his 'eve' cd-rom btw...
