What dj's have you seen live?

And I'm talking about ones that most of us have heard of,
here. Make a list every one of you, please. I myself
confess to actually never having seen a dj spin live, at
least ones that are somewhat famous.

the most of the pioneers were live here, djing is not
flexible enough for me...

I`ve seen Carl Cox vs Slam, there the most famous DJ`s I`ve
seen--prefer seeing musicians play live than play a mix set
[I`d rather choose what music goes on].

too many to list but the one i've seen lately who shits on
anybody i've seen for years was Alex Patterson.
seriously, if you get a chance, go to see this guy, amazing,
pure party tunes all the way.

Um... I saw Reprazent one time. They all had turntables.
Does that count? Oh, and SUV played a 2 hour long DJ set
before they took the stage.

I'd MUCH rather see a dj mix a set than see a musician play
live. Simply because live concerts are too predictable. You
know what's going to be played there already, and although
it may still be enjoyable, it is certainly predictable.

DJ sets, however, are always consistently danceable, and you
never have any idea what they'll be spinning. Generally you
won't even know WHAT their spinning, but does it really even
matter?

Dude, what are you talking about? What do you mean you know
what someone will play? Are you a clairvoyant?

Predictable? Eh? I mean, If you go to see a house or a drum
'n' bass or trance DJ, you can say that to an extent, you'll
know what to expect but then again, that's just the style...

offline Meho Krljic from Beograd (Yugoslavia) on 2002-07-08 15:36 [#00301584]
Points: 6617 Status: Addict

If you go and see Motorhead, then, sure, you'll more or less
know what to expect but that is the case also with
Grooverider, innit?

offline Deathsmith from Brussels (Belgium) on 2002-07-08 15:41 [#00301590]
Points: 1027 Status: Regular

No, I mean, if I'm going to see a concert by an actual
band/group, I know what they're going to play: THEIR OWN
MUSIC.

And the genre of music they spin itself is not all. The
consistency, how well and smoothly it flows, and how fast
the dj does his overall sets, are all very important, and
that means that every dj set is different in it's own
special ways.

And plus djing never gets old. A band could not make a
living by just touring year after year, all over the globe.
That wouldn't work. But that's a dj's job, and a good dj
will never really die out or go away, like too many bands
do.

Mate, you're quite prejudiced.

Go out and watch more jazz.

Go and see some free improv.

Hell, go and see some punk rock.

"What dj's have you seen live? "

sorry, but that's a complete oxymoron.

I saw the Beastie Boys, but Mix Master Mike was not there...
bummer...

DJ RAP???? DJ DWAM?? SASHA??

RAWK ON!!!

And ummm Meho Krljic: umm, I don't understand what got you
upset in the first place. I just said I'd prefer going to
dj mixes rather than concerts, and I stated my reasons why.
Sure, if you see Grooverider, you know pretty much what
you're going to get, but you sure as hell don't know what
it's going to be like. . .

And what am I prejudiced against, anyway?

Core: I'm pretty sure my question was not an oxymoron. It
wasn't self-contradicting, I was asking you people: what
dj's have you seen [perform mixes] live?

i think what core means is that you're seeing someone play
records (that have obviously already been recorded and hence
are not live), so it's not live in the live instruments
sense of the word.

meep

oh. . . I see. . . but what I meant by live is actually seen
a dj spinning in real life. We've all got dj mixes by the
famous guys on cd, but not all of us have seen any of these
guys dj for real.

dj shadow (fucking amazing)

josh wink- he was djing at a large festival, and he was in
this tent with strobe lights etc... and some girl had a
seizure. He couldnt see her...and people were trying to tell
him, but he couldnt hear, so he just kept on playing.

She was taken away on stretcher.

offline Deathsmith from Brussels (Belgium) on 2002-07-08 19:39 [#00301798]

Why would he have stopped djing just because she had a
seizure?? That would ruin the whole event!

i get you dude...i've never seen a big name dj live. id like
to see andrew weatherall or richard fearless maybe. i
usually just think of djs playing background music for
something - obviously thats not the case in quite a lot of
instances/

djs playing background music for something. . . ha!!! If
you ever see John Digweed or his partner Sasha spin live,
you'll change your mind.

i just read this thread again and i have to bump it up im
afraid.

because basically, at the end of the day, a dj is just
playing other people's records.

discuss/flame/rebuke/rant/go for your life....

I don't know core it depends on the DJ. I'm not a huge fan
of scratch DJs but I've seen Kid Koala a number of times and
he's really musical - he's cutting up and making tunes on
the spot.

You can't group DJs into one big group. They belong in
two:

Great ones
&
Shit ones

agreed.

but there are so many shit ones, especially all the
ibiza-types who are huge wealthy international names (while
the musicians whose records they are spinning are still
unknown bedroom-producers with office day jobs.)

core what do you think of John Digweed and Sasha, the two
best dj's in the world. They're famous, HIGHLY respected,
they don't do any lame scratching, and they're gods.

I don't think you have enough respect for dj culture in
general. It takes alot of preperation, skill, and
concentration to lay down a good set.

Guys like Digweed and Sasha are incredible because they
truly LOVE what they do, they LOVE djing, and they devote
their lives to it. DJ's like that are very rare, but they
deserve all the success that they get.
