sometime you should look up the meaning behind the
holidays...most have nothing to do with what is being
celebrated. especially the christian holidays....they all
have pagan backgrounds. it's very interesting. just check it
out in an encyclopedia sometime! =0)

offline Zeus from San Francisco (United States) on 2002-07-04 07:42 [#00296303]
Points: 14042 Status: Lurker

well, i do know a good amouint about what they are
celebrating... both christian, and pagan... but i never
think of it at the time.

like when christmas comes around i just think "snow men,
trees, lights, santa, family" etc

AFGHANS FEAR 4 JULY TERROR ATTACKS:

The Afghan people admit they are 'shitting themselves' about
when the next American terrorist attack on them will take
place. One said "it's the 4th of July. You've seen the
Wedding massacre these rednecks did when sober - imagine
what they could do with a belly full of cold beer." However
the Pentagon dismissed Afghan fears. Donald Rumsfeld said
"what massacre? Our troops were handing out wedding cake
when Osama Bin Laden surprised them with a dirty bomb." He
added "killing the children was a preventative measure - cos
now they won't grow up hating America will they."

JOKE

In the United States, Independence Day, also called the
Fourth of July, is a federal holiday celebrating the
adoption of the Declaration of Independence on 4 July 1776,
declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain.

Independence Day is commonly associated with parades,
barbecues, picnics, baseball games, and various other public
and private events celebrating the history, government, and
traditions of the U.S. Fireworks have been associated with
the Fourth of July since 1777.

Despite the genesis of Independence Day, it is largely
uncommon for Americans to express anti-British sentiment on
the day or to view it as a celebration of anti-colonialism.
Indeed, most Americans today consider the United Kingdom
their greatest ally. Rather than specifically as an
opportunity to commemorate the end of British rule in the
18th century, contemporary Americans generally perceive the
holiday as a celebration of the U.S.A. itself and the
political values that motivated the United States
Declaration of Independence, including explicit principles
of Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and implicit
ones of democracy, liberty, freedom, and equality under the
law.

Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous
fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

*weeps*
