DJ Shadow - The Private Press

I bought this today, and so far am very happy with it... I
still think Endtroducing is better, but this album is quite
good so far... in fact, You Can't Go Home Again is the best
song from either of those albums imo... but with
Endtroducing I just love the laid back beats, and even the
fact that the sound is fuzzier is something I like... The
Private Press is very good though... I really love the 80's
feel in a lot of the songs...

i think the private press is a huge disapointment. Sure its
decent, but I was hoping for so much more, I dont think its
very original.

what's your favorite track man? I can't get over You Can't
Go Home Again... it's gorgeous, funky, and even a bit
nostalgic for me...

mine to listen to

It took me a FEW listenes to REALLY get into this album, its
well made and soo addicting once you pass that mountain that
is:

"Hoped it would compare to ENTRODUCING"....but I realized
NOTHING will compare to that, once I accepted that, I ENJOY
it alot....=)

true...once you stop thinking of it as Entroducing part II
you can really get into it & appreciate it better...

I don't buy a lot of this sort of stuff nowadays but I made
an exception for Shadow as I know he does really care about
his music & wouldn't release anything shite or
dissapointing...

Soundwise, it's a lot dirtier than before; he's been saying
in interviews, it's more sampled from old privately-released
records & less from obscure funk tracks (which he reckons
have got way too expensive now everyone's hunting em
down...)...

Very nice once you've got into it...

I just got it, and except for a few lackluster tracks I like
it a lot. Track 5...Six Days...Blood on the motorway are
all very appealing. My first DJ shadow album.

I like it much more then Endtroducing, and Mashin' On The
Motorway just crax me up. And Blood on the Motorway is
always a good one, and it always fits perfectly with
whatever is going on around me, I don't know why.
I got it in Toronto, along with the You Can't Go Home Again
single, with an isntrumental Walkie Talkie, and another
b-side. GREEAT GREAT GREAT

I hope you guys realize that The Private Press is really a
story about this dude. If you listen to the CD all the way
through you can picture the movie in your head.

Try it.

dunno about that

one of the very few things that bothers me about this album
is that it comes to a complete stop too many times.

mongrel... / ...meets his maker

blood on the motorway

gdmfsob / right thing (i think)

its an amazing album (not the best hiphop of the year tho),
i really enjoy it. there is no way it was gunna better
Endtroducing, because thats an all time great.

The Private press is extremely good imo and i am completely
satisfied with it!

private press is boring. its just missing some key element
that endtroducing (and to a lesser extent preemptive strike)
had.

I'm going to be a miserable bastard and say that I was
devastated after hearing this for the first time. I waited 5
years for it and it didn't live up to my expectations. I
wasn't hoping for an Endtro pt.II but it really is lame by
his standards. While Endtro sounded way. way ahead this just
sounds dated. If it was by anyone else I'd think it was
pretty good but I've grown to expect more.

I know you should judge a record by its own merits but I
can't get rid of the baggage.

highlights :)

what'd you expect, techno?

you bought the UNKLE album didn't you? and the cd's w/ cut
chemist?

Of course not. But I expected a step forward, not a step
back. Where Endtro was groundbreaking, the Private Press
just sounds average. It sounds really one dimensional. And
why bother with annoying dialogue between tracks? The use of
dialogue on Endtro was well placed and enhanced the track.

Think my fave track is that one called Monosyllibik (sp?)
....where he takes a simple 2 bar loop and makes an entire
track outta it...There some beautiful break work in
there...borders on whacked-out IDM at times...

Haven't listened to the rest enough yet to pick any other
faves other than that one...
