if you persue something you're interested in with passion
and intelligence that makes you a "nerd" by outsider
definition, agree or disagree

thats really a crap statement.

if anything, its a commendable trait... to know that someone
loves what they do, and they are dedicated

i love music
i go to music school
no one ive ever told this to has called me a dork... they
thought it was cool

Hmm then the people in your school are very mature, Zeus.
Because, I'm homeschooled, intelligent enough, and very
passionate about music. Most people like me when they get
to know me, but alot of people in my town that don't even
know me hate me. . .

i dont give a shit what other people think about me.
i've got worse stuff to worry about than that.

i didn't say it wasn't commendable, in fact "nerds" by the
definition in the topic are my favorite people. what i'm
saying is, "normal people" (you know, the people who lack
passion and/or intelligence for something or perhaps
anything) are intimidated by people like that, hence the
judgemental branding of "nerd" (whether pretending to be
kidding or acting completely serious). it is an
immature move on their part, and i think it's very prevalent
in society.

offline Deathsmith from Brussels (Belgium) on 2002-07-04 01:58 [#00295908]

I think overall the Intelligence + Passion= Nerdiness
formula is profoundly true. Think of all the real nerds,
the stereotypical nerds, especially the ones in movies and
such! The formal outcasts. Aside from looking like nerds,
they are usually portrayed as being very intelligent, very
passionate about one technically "uncool" thing or another,
and are therefore unnacceptable to their peers.

''Nerd'' can be defined in different ways by different
people... if listening to ''difficult'' music and spending a
lot of time on the computer and not whoring out my
individualism to be ''cool'' makes me a nerd, so be it. I
like it like that.

no, its not my school... my whole school is a music school

people i meet that go other places

no one has thought it was dorky... they get really
interested..

just normal people

well.. .about the home schooling...

some people look at it as you think youre better then
them... that you dont have to socialize with the "normal
kids" and get a "public education"

at least thats my take on it

Yes, homeschoolers are stereotyped to a horrible degree as
well, but for the most part, that stereotype-ation is
justified, at least. Most homeschoolers I've met ARE
nerds!

offline OK on 2002-07-04 05:45 [#00296128]

a disagree

i'd say that inteliigence + (whatever the opossite of
passion is) = one kind of nerdiness.

and lack of intelligence + close mind = nerdiness too
(sometimes)

being bullied at school = nerdiness (generally).

i know people who are very passioned and very intelligent..
and they all fit into the "cool people" category.

passion makes intelligence useful.

apathy makes intelligence wasted on star trek details. and
comic books

my two cents *clink clink*

it all depends on how you look at the word NERD. for me it's
not negative at all, i consider myself one. =0)
for example, i LOVE MATH, something that most people hate.
is that not nerdi-ness to some people? is it negative?

answers - YES....and NO respectively

passion & intelligence is very very ATTRACTIVE/ SEXY to me,
because the person infuses whatever they LOVE with an
excitement and intensity that gets you thrilled/interested
about it and makes you:

1. wanna learn about it

or

2. wanna listen to it

or

3. wanna become proficient at it

etc....

i never wanna lose my passion for learning, it makes it
exciting to get up everyday! =0)

oohhh a new pic from miss LeCoeur

and i kind of agree with you... but to me a nerd is some one
with no social skills, and stuff... not someone who loves
something, and is intellegent... etc etc.

and yes passion and intellegence is very attractive.

offline SwitchFrontside on 2002-07-04 06:38 [#00296205]

to me a nerd is someone who has a full on obsession with
something and thinks lives breathes it and is oblivious to
his surroundings that dont involve it.......... not that
that bad or anything just what i think a nerd is.

offline LeCoeur from the outer edge of the universe (United States) on 2002-07-04 06:45 [#00296215]

tis sometimes the definition of the word..

nerd

n. 1. [mainstream slang] Pejorative applied to anyone with
an above-average IQ and few gifts at small talk and ordinary
social rituals. 2. [jargon] Term of praise applied (in
conscious ironic reference to sense 1) to someone who knows
what's really important and interesting and doesn't care to
be distracted by trivial chatter and silly status games.

the general consensus is that a NERD is someone who is
socially inept, however aren't we all guilty of anti-social
behaviour at different times......i know i am and yet i'm a
very social person.

it tis an interesting question!

though i tend to prefer the term 'geek'
id say that intelligence+passion=nerdiness having said
that...i think its a positive thing...the people who are
labeled as nerds in high school...and are generally
considered outasts by society...are often the people who
make a difference and go places with their lives...

those with intelligence...and an interest with something
other than getting laid and or wasted are always going to be
considered odd

im rather proud to be a geek, actually
and the only people i have any interest in being with are
geeks...
im not trying to be snobby or pretentious...but "normal"
people just seem boring..and often superficial..because
usually to be considered "normal" they have to supress
whatever might make them seem "weird"...and this isnt
healthy at all...look at all the unhappy normal people...who
hate their jobs, get stressed out about stupid things,
surround themselves with people they can just barely
stand..just so theyre not alone...they do things they
hate...just because they feel they are supposed to

i feel sorry for the people who feel they have to be
something besides themselves..especially those who ridicule
and look down at those who are genuine..

this is all generalizing, i know...im sure there are plenty
of geeky people who i probably wouldnt want to hang around
with...and there are normal people who i dont mind..
and geeky people dont always lack social skills...but they
very often exist outside the mainstream group

and zeus..i dont really know you...but the fact that you a.
hang out on this messageboard and b. go to music school
indicate that you too, probably are a geek ..which isnt
something to be ashamed of

well... i guess it all boils down to your definition of
geek.

yeah, i spend alot of time on the net... and i go to music
school (modern music mind you... not classical blah)

i am kind of anti social... but its by choice that i seclude
myself. in my eyes, this doesnt define geek or nerd.

nerd makes me think of someone who thinks that star trek is
actually a documentry... not a show. just to state one
example...

How about:
too intelligent + too passionate = nerd/geek
too = pathological, disfunctionally, obsessively, etc.
People are "nerdy" or "geeky" too others who are so removed
from "nerd" or "geek" culture that functional communiation
ceases. And vice versa: "nerds" and "geeks" can't relate to
others because they are too far removed from "popular"
culture and society to functionally communicate. It's a form
of sub-culture shock I guess. Does anybody understand what
I'm trying to say? Are we on the same wavelength here?
Hello?

yeah...i guess the problem is that being a 'nerd' is seen by
mainstream society as a negative or laughable thing...when
in reality...society has nerds to thank for a lot of great
things they take for granted...

and yeah...those trekkie people can be a bit much...but
hey...you should respect them for doing their own
thing...and dressing up in weird costumes and not giving two
shits about what all the 'normal' people think of
them...just because they love what theyre doing

offline wayout from the street of crocodiles on 2002-07-04 08:18 [#00296328]
Points: 2849 Status: Lurker | Followup to deadwhitespoon: #00296312

yeah..i know what youre saying...usually things that are
'cool' and 'popular' are sort of trivial...and not worth
become passionate about...
usually 'normal' people become interested in whatever they
are told is 'cool' at the moment..for the purpose of
appearing cool themselves..so they generally dont have
genuine interest in many things...since they have to be
ready to discard it and pick up something new whenever the
fad passes...

so when someone becomes genuinely interested in
something...its often something that isnt as
discardable...and not appreciated by mainstream culture
...unless its chosen as the 'hot new thing' for a few
months...then everyone who's everyone is into it...so they
can be like everyone...and then once the fad passes...all
thats left is the people who were truly into it..

its a lot like that episode of doug..where the guy on that
tv show wore the same outfit that doug always wore...and for
a week..everyone at his school wore green sweaters and brown
shorts

offline wayout from the street of crocodiles on 2002-07-04 08:29 [#00296343]
Points: 2849 Status: Lurker

and...i think having 'social skills' is overrated
anyways...it seems those with 'social skills' are people who
are just good at meeting others...and making small
talk...this doesnt mean they have tons and tons of really
close friends and important relationships...just a lot of
acquiantances...people they talk to and hang around with a
bit...but have no real connection with

these people seem to usually find silence
uncomfortable..especially around others...
as douglas adams said 'when peoples mouths stop
working...their brains start working'...so they feel the
need to fill all this silence with mindless chatter...or
vapid pop music...whereas 'nerds' would much prefer sitting
in silence daydreaming or thinking about things ..rather
than talk to someone they hardly know about baseball or
shoes or something

plus ...having an interest in something that isnt considered
'cool' at the moment may get them ridiculed or at least
looked upon negatively by others...so they often avoid these
awkward situations by keeping to themselves
