I'm wondering if anyone can suggest some simple songs with
maybe just strings and really good vocals that help when you
feel depressed.

how about stringed instruments? download some 70s neil young
songs, especially off harvest (and if you like it, buy that
amazing album)

Syd Barrets Opal is really nice, especially Word Song. Or
any Nick Drake, like black eyed dog...
Jeff Buckley is sublime on Grace...

Of course these people killed themselves or drove themselves
insane.

Stick to Morresey...he only drove himself inane

hmm
squarepusher's 'my sound' is the one that always helps
me...

brian eno's 'always returning' is another nice, simple song
with that sort of mood..

stars of the lid's 'requiem for dying mothers part1' is also
really simple (minimalistic even) but has strings and is
really beautiful...in a sad way

and of course..radiohead has tons...how to disappear
completely, street spirit, motion picture soundtrack,
pyramid song, kinetic, etc...

bjork's got some nice ones too..try joga..
or if your looking for something more uplifting...try 'undo'
or 'its not up to you'

Some (read: SOME) of the Aphex Twin stuff like Domino are
errie and calm. However, I listed to it after my grandma's
funeral and it was really sad~~~

Blackbird, Julia, Noweigan Wood, all by, you guessed it, the
Beatles.

And I agree, Syd Barrett's solo stuff is nice and charmingly
simple. Unlike that Gilmour fella...

tangents from whatever was initially requested...based on my
current preferences...

Ethereal Choir by Ceri JC.

Very relaxing with a tint of melancholy. Sadly it's not on
my MP3.com site...
