right, this has been playing on my mind for ages now.
What do you call this sort of music? eg:aphex, squarepusher,
plaid, brothomstates and so on.

i myself tend to just call it electro, but i've heard loads
of other names like experimental and the one i detest, idm.

so, like, what do u call it?

I'm sick and tired of all these terms!
I'm just gonna call it:

AM

amazing music!

dammit I hear this so often. I don't even call it that, I
call it by artist. otherwise I call it music and I call
everything else either "shit" or "top 40 bullshit". though I
do like Tool, Soundgarden and a couple other top 40 folks.

(how many topics about this 'idm' term... -_-)

okay, well
i just call it idm and don't tell people what 'idm' stands
for, unless i tell them how stupid and maladjusted it is.
'idm' sounds good when you don't know what it means! :)

yeah, but I prefer to call it electronica just because if
you tell someone its IDM, they ALWAYS want to know what that
stands for, so then you have to tell them anyway, and I
really don't like what the term IDM stands for.

i guess they aren't curious... :)

I hate using the word "electronic" or "electronica" to
describe the music I listen to though...it makes it sound so
Hollywood or something. I mean, listen to SAW2 and then tell
me that "electronica" is an apt term for that sort of
music... it's just more artistic than most popular music.

besides, your average boy band, pop princess, or hip hop
thug of today is likely to have more expensive electronic
gear than your average basement producer of whatever it is
we listen to.

saw2 is not idm

offline license from out of nowhere on 2002-06-24 20:42 [#00283565]
Points: 865 Status: Lurker

no, it's not. but it's Aphex, and Aphex is associated with
IDM. and should we associate SAW2 with a different term? I
definitely wouldn't call SAW2 "new age" and
considering the other "ambient" I've heard, I'm hesitant to
call it that, despite its title.

why this incessant need to categorise, anyway?

offline tolstoyed from the ocean on 2002-06-24 20:45 [#00283568]

i don't like to categorise music
its just music i like and music i dislike

questioning the ethics behind the term.

IDM is a crap name.
I mean, you should try to fucking dance to autechre and
you'll see it's not intelligent DANCE music at all. It's
stupid to call it dance music!

i kinda like "experimental". Makes it sound deeper than it
really is.
Electro is what i've called it for years (although thats not
really correct either...).

offline WeaklingChild from Glasgow (United Kingdom) on 2002-06-24 22:46 [#00283688]
Points: 3354 Status: Lurker

i just dont like it being described as dance music even if
it is "intelligent" considering all the braindead shit that
people class as dance music eg:Judge Jules, Paul Oakenfold.

Some of this ''electronic'' music can sound so organic,
though... I don't like the words ''electronic'', ''dance'',
''IDM'', but realistically, they ain't going anywhere.
Everything is fucking electronic now.

I'll continue to call IDM ''IDM''... but I LOATHE to explain
what it stands for to people... intelligent dance? Jesus,
pretentious AND cheesy.

offline license from out of nowhere on 2002-06-24 23:04 [#00283707]

me neither. when I hear "electronica" I think of said
braindead shit, also Prodigy, Crystal Method, Juno Reactor
(see : Mortal Kombat Theme), and anything "electronic" which
is emotionless, uncreative, and trendy sounding.

isn't "electronic" music a misnomer? as Autechre said, Frank
Sinatra could be considered electronic - is not a microphone
electronic? a turntable? an electric guitar? amplifiers?
speakers?

offline license from out of nowhere on 2002-06-24 23:06 [#00283710]

yeah. I usually just call it "skronk", even though it's an
industrial term. if that title doesn't fit (and it usually
doesn't), then it's just fucking "music".

License: okok so electronica is a shitty term, but im just
shit out of answers then. From now on music will just be
known as music. (yeah right, try telling that to anyone else
and they'll be like "no man, there are like, genres and
stuff")

There's an instinct that many people have to try and
classify stuff. Well, if you're going to, at least try and
make sure the genre name gives you some idea what the
music's going to sound like.

My fave names: Glitchcore, Grindcore, Drill & Bass. They
say "Don't listen to this unless you're well weird or
partially deaf."

But IDM really is a shit name. I watched Aphex this Glasto
and the set was blinding but pretty fucking far from
"Intelligent". And the only person who could dance to it
seemed to be having an epileptic fit.

I don't know if this goes for the rest of you but I find
that when someone asks me "What music do you like?", my
answer of "Aphex..." etc. either marks the beginning of a
long conversation or the end of a short one.

So who needs genres anyway?

..."And the only person who could dance to it
seemed to be having an epileptic fit." classic !!!

What pisses me off is that people assume everyone likes
"IDM" as a bag.

some so-called IDM artists are nothing like Aphex and I'd
rather listen to Bob Marley, he being far more intelligant
than they (posthumously of course= :)

it's punk.

it's the equivalent to punk music in this age.

but the 'punks' of this age are apathethic.. and instead of
trying to change society they become parasites of it.

offline hedphelym from Montreal (Canada) on 2002-07-22 09:02 [#00319452]

Definitly not punk. Electro is what old skool brakers would
dance to. And Tiga (from Montreal) has started this big new
electro scene in Germay. I used to call it classic British
techno, but that would include orbital, fsol, etc., Now IDM is
good. I suggest that we never tell a single person what it
stands for, and claim the meaning was forgotten soon after
its creation.
Wdya think guys?
Btw, I'v taken an immovane, for my sleep problem, and it's
really difficult to concentrate on readin + writing. The
words are moving and your avatars are moving, but not in
their usual way. I feel like I'mm slowing down...

experimental music.

or idm, simply because the name has been established, like
it or not. it's not so much that the music itself is
"intelligent," but it's more about the process of making it.
obviously, not any dumbshit can go an make the kind of music
that richard makes. why? because he's fucking brilliant
that's why.

some of you have said 'i don't like the term IDM. it's too
pretentious' and yet, you may have at one time or another,
called such people like Paul oakenfold as 'braindead.' how
is that not pretentious?

AND by the way..... i don't know about you, but i ALWAYS
dance to RDJ or even autechre. sometimes i find that thing
are called what they are called for a reason, like it or
not.
