Interesting article about moby claiming that groups with
more tech savy fans are more likely to have their sales of
cds effected. He calls it the pearl jam effect.

that is a very good point. makes you wonder if some
aphex/autechre/plaid type stuff may in reality be of
comparable popularity to top 40 stuff?

prolly not. :p

I didn't read it but is the main point probably since techy
people know how to download music/use computers, they
therefore won't buy as much music (since they downloaded
it)? Whereas people who listen to jewel are grandmas who
can't think of how to open the computer to microwave a tv
dinner.

Yeah, heh heh, if he's bald he's probably a liar... and a
child molester. This is completely reasonable slander.

Ok I read it now, so our goal is to target the old grandmas
that don't know how to download music. They're always in the
grocery store, so we'll have to sell our aphextwin.nu
compilation there. I suppose the musical content won't
matter, just the right cover on the album for this target
audience, like some clouds in the background with a baked
muffin in the foreground and we can call it "recipe music"
or something. Well grandmas are known for gossip so word
will get around the the actual music sucks, maybe we should
make the music appealing to this target audience too... or
not since it'll be a get rich quick scam anyway.

hes probaby right but i mean even though i dl a lot of afx
shit i still go out and buy the cds.. burning a cd isnt the
same and plus it helps sales and wat not.. i dont think moby
has to worry about decling cd sales he should worry more
about his music..

I think one can counter with the idea that techno savy fans
are more apt at getting the word out via the internet, about
a CD, song, that think is good, and effecting more people
than their own inner techie circle.

The more people talking, the more chance more people will
buy. If your music appeals to homeless people, chances are
their won't be much internet buzz. Obviously there won't be
many CD sales either, but at least tech savy people get the
word out to non tech savy people, whether they themselves
are more inclined to pirate is probably a reasonable
assumption though.

Does it balance in the end, I can't find a bit of evidence
that supports any conclusion yet, so I can't say.

although, he has a good point, i think the bald bastard is
just trying to pamper his ego by telling himself that the
reason for his declining record sales is because of
filesharing on the net instead of the truth, which is his
music sucks. :D

didn't sell

explanation.

I think that this can be true, but usually for me I download
a few songs from a cd to dictate whether I'm going to buy
it. Its unfair for the music industry to ask consumers to
take a leap of faith on a cd, because they may end up hating
it.

Overall I think that article was Moby pampering his ego, as
brendan ether pointed out.

That was probably more accurately libel, not slander, since
it was "in print" rather than spoken.

I like some Moby. But I like the Warp/Rephlex artists a lot
more.
