this isnt a topic about the name IDM.
im just using it as the familiar term here
what is the "IDM sound", as someone called it in another thread...
obviously its very emotional...
but whatelse? is it kind of a raw sound? would something that is produced well, and sounds very smooth still be the IDM sound?
i dont know...

I would describe the idm sound as a sourt of abstract and experimental electronic music, often eclectic, and sometimes with classical/orchestral roots

i'de say that with idm, sound quality is sometimes not really of the essence, and mabey the occasional bad quality adds the overall effect

non-pop? :)
ummm, I guess it's hard to classify... BoC, and Autechre both qualify don't they, and they are totally different from each other...

but, you can hear a song, and you know if it is IDM or not
so it obviously has a sound

I never use the term idm when I'm describing this type of music to people, I just use it here because everyone knows what your refering to... I prefer abstract electonic music, as it goes by in the record store I frequent

If it doesn't fit anywhere else, then it's IDM.

are you kidding! as long as 2 tracks like Gantz Graf and then Blue Calx exist in the same genre, an "idm" sound is 99.9% arbitrary - the rest is the fact that they all mostly use computers. IMHO.
but then there's "idm" artists like req who just sequence w/ computers and acutally produce their own noises and such...

breakbeat electro with little details, percussion-sequencing experiments that's what I think of when I hear "IDM"...
I don't think it's very different from some of Kraftwerk's music.
