Today i borrowed it from a friend and im gonna watch it on my computer now!!!! Im very exited =)
Its the only big Kubric film i haven't seen i think.
One time they showed it on big screens at a Electro/IDM party in stockholm as the Dj's played great music , i was hypnotized.
The scenes where people walked around in that strange anti gravity cylinder room looked amazing.
Some say this is his greatest work. What do you think ?

i love this movie! one of my favourites..... its so HUGE and epic.....
my computer says a bunch of HAL9000 lines from the movie:
when i try to shut it down:"I'm sorry dave... im afriad i can't do that"
when i empty the trash:"Im afriad that is something which i cannot allow to happen"
of course..... he can't actually stop me..... OR CAN HE!??!

it's unnecessarily boring at times, the spacewalk for example, but the atmosphere is brilliant and the sets are gorgeous

Its fantastic when you think that films need an explosion every 30 seconds to sell these days.
Its cerebral entertainment, and who cares if there are long spells of tedium ? I mean, thats part of the films aura right ?

I think it's one of the most elegant films ever released...
It's like a ballet in space (and I think Kubrick saw it similarly; hence the classical music...)...
And it looks great even now...none of the FX have dated despite all the advances with CGI....

Its my favorite film of all time..
Could you imagine seeing this film in 1968 when it was made? Superb effects that still hold up to this very day.
5 stars

At one 1968 screening, a guy ran through the screen screaming "It's God! It's God!" Or something like that.

i think kubrick made it boring on purpose. listen to what they are talking about, and how they are discussing stuff in the beginning. it's still great though. and you haven't seen 2001 until you've seen it on the big screen, intermission and all.

I just saw 2001 last year on 70mm projection(twice). With 5.1 sound and all.....It was great! Supposedly they are going to do the same with Brazil this year....YAY!!!!!!! And Lolita too, now that I think about it, this should be a good summer for being drunk in a theatre.....:)

I think that this movie is more focussed at artistic value than the entertainment value. I think Kubric wanted to show the dehumanisation because of technology and to do that he needed some really dry and sterile moments in the movie to get that across. It's a great movie once you figure out what everything stands for.

"HAL=IBM?"
I always thought it was a play on IBM but recently I learn't that HAL stands for Heuristic Algorithmic Computer.
2001 is such a beautiful film, if your reading this and you haven't seen it, you must!!

in a samll way i think he was rebelling against all the science fiction movies that were plaguing the nation at that time.
everyone knows that in a vacuum there is no sound. and in space at a fixed vantage point things don't zip and swoosh around like in an atmosphere.
he was keeping it real.
EYES WIDE SHUT WAS AMAZING! the themes should have punched anyone in the gut, especially in this day and age.
also some of the best cinematography to date! damn composition genius that man, stan!

I agree that Eyes Wide Shut is amazing. It's probably the most beautiful film I have ever seen. The lighting is too beautiful for words and the cinematograhphy is breath-taking.
2001 and EWS are just two reasons why Kubrick is my favourite director.

Umbrella Corp. are currently working on a new virus which will somehow be mishandled causing an out-break and turning a cities population into brain hungry zombies. This will, for some unknown reason, happen around the same time a new Resident Evil game is released. But of course I don't know that, and neither should you.

AI, does it feel like a Kubrick film or did Steve take over? I haven't seen it yet but some people have said it is much more of a Kubrick film than a Speilberg film. Any thoughts?

"(unlike the piece of crap 'eyes wide shut') "
Eyes wide shut was pretty boring, exept for the orgy .. lol! no serious.. I really liked that part.it's so ... mysterious...(those masks!!!) decadent.... beautiful....!
and for space oddissey 2001: THAT is a masterpiece. I think I was a little bit too young when I saw it,but even 4 years ago ,I liked it!
I hope to see 2001 soon again!
