Astrobotnia Part 1

A very intresting album which brings up a lot of questions.
What equipment was used? When was it recorded? And who did
record it? Is it Aphex's work?

Well, i recieved my copy this morning, and have been
listening to it most of the time that i am up. The tracks on
the MP3 on rephlex.com are Lightworks, Hallo, Everyone and
Sweden. In the inlay, there are all the tracks listed and
their track names not only for Astrobotnia 1 but for all of
them. Here is the rest of the track titles for anyones
intrest:

Astrobotnia 1
1) Lightworks
2) Hallo
3) Everyone
4) Acidophilus
5) Untitled
6) The Wild Thing
7) Miss June
8) Sweden
9) Applause

Astrobotnia 2
1) -
2) -
3) -
4) -
5) -
6) -

Astrobotnia 3
1) Muminaa
2) B
3) Acidophilus II
4) Portable Motor Home
5) Drops
6) Thoarse
7) Esther calling Jennifer
8) Bidfus
9) Leftovers
10) C*nt
11) I am Mr. P.

How it could be Aphex Twin:

There seems to be alot of signature 'old school' Aphex Twin
manouvers in the tracks following the first 3. Alot of the
same types of sweeping pads from SAW 85-92, and quite a lot
ot TB-303 work in one track named Acidophilus that seems
very similar to any of the U.I or Gak relases. Plus there is
a blatant use of such Drum Machines as TR-606 and TR-808,
which we all know Aphex is in posession of. However, most
electronic artists are in possesion of these types of Drum
Machine. And the track on the last Astrobotnia named 'C*nt'
could be a refernce to the Caustic Window song, but we don't
have a sound file so this can't be proved.

How it couldn't be Aphex Twin:

It has come to my attention that Aphex Twin does not seem to
put all of his 'Drill and Bass' work on Rephlex Records. He
tends to do a lot of his old Analouge Bubblebath styles on
there. There is some great use of the 'Snare Rush' technique
as we all know in the Astrobotnia demo given to us by
rephlex.com, so i would doubt that Aphex would make a new
begining now (although he might :s). the last track on
Astrobotnia 3 (I am Mr. P.) could be a

clue to who it could be (perhaps PP Roy).

Ovuca

I have not heard much of Ovuca's tracks (infact only the
first 5 from his new album Afternoon Girl...i think) but it
does not seem to be using the same type of techiniques here.
So i have nothing to go by :s Although in-light of a recent
review of the Rephlex Showcase USA tour on this site, it was
said that Ovuca came on and started playing alot of the
Astrobotnia tracks.

My thoughts:

I reckon its a mix of artists, such as Ovuca, PP Roy and
maybe Andy Jenkinson.

I hope this has been of some help

kinda like saying, with "polygon window" for example....
why doesnt Ricard make that a Aphex Twin release..

i guess Ovuca is doing a similar thing to what Richard has
done, release material thru a different name.

i see your point, and i do recall aphex or someone saying
ovuca is very prolific. but unlike early aphex he doesn't
release a lot of things per year; the last ovuca album came
out a year ago, to me it'd make more sense to release
astrobotnia as ovuca.

track nr 1 on pt 3 is even called Muminaa.

Ovuca said in a interview that he loves the Mumin trolls.

Ovuca has played as Astrobotnia all the Rephlex tour!!!

astrob for part 2, and andy jenkinson as astrob for part 3?

That's a pretty cool deal as those shirts generally cost

i think you might have got the wrong end of the stick! I
order the t-shirt as well as the record. I was chuffed as I
had never owned an afx shirt before. Sorry Jand I think I
must have got your hopes up.

Anyway the T looks pretty well made with a nicw afx logo on
the label.

oh, I see...np..

Just that a couple of other people have mentioned getting a
free AFX T shirt so I thought you were another one...heh,
you noticed that little logo as well, wish all my clothes
had that on...(I've got loads of John Richmond clothes just
because his little designer logo says "John"...sad, I
know..;)..

Think I'm gonna order AS anyway; not sure if the shops
around here are gonna get it in or not...and I'm pretty
eager to have a listen....

i went down to Soho last weekedn and they hadn't even heard
of it so I guess chelmsford might be the same? And anyway I
have no qualms with WARPMART. Even if RDJ doesn't like them

Yeah its strange, but I think rephlex has created this
extreme locker that makes
it impossible to convert the cd into mp3s ;)

rephlex albums and electronic music albums in general use to
end up on soulseek like 2-3 week before official release
date, dunno about this one, I heard a lot of cats
complaining about that its not on SS.

maybe Rephlex have asked Nir to filter it out...

I know Warp requested something similar but NIR didn't feel
it was worthwhile but might have rethought for a label as
small as Rephlex...

I can't even use SS at the moment :(...doesn't seem to work
on my girlf PCs for some reason, hopefully I'll get it
sorted soon...Not really that bothered as I've got a load of
CDs already on their way to me from WARP & EBAY...

this has all been very suspicios lately! Rephlex are up to
something. The two guys who have been recently posting are
something to do with them (maybe).
Rephlex have been trying a strange marketting strategy too.
I would say that AFX is at work.
