Im a huge fan of whatever you call that kind of horn playing (the trombones and trumpets and all)...Ive heard it before but don't know what to call it. Its sorta chaosy sounding. I don't know if its a sub-genre of jazz or what. Does anyone know what it would be called and where else could you find this type of playing?

the jazz musicians who played those parts were asked to just do it freeform mingus style (charles mingus) so you may want to look into some mingus..i quite like his stuff, but i don't know too much of it..i think one of the main inspirations was the song "bird call"

That would be pretty amazing if someone could actually WRITE that kind of playing. it would have to be...well...that chance music style John Cage used. Be cool if it was all thought out to be chaotic when in fact it was correct. that would be far out sweet. i really wish i could write something like that

Oh do i ever! and a guy named Steve Reich as well..whose just as good. I like John better though.
John Cage:
Fontana Mix (1958) -- early form of noise music using radio signals and chatter. think a less complicated Merzbow...a bit less noisy
In a landscape (Anthony De Mare) -- A song by John Im guessing played by Anthony. Very peaceful / slow piano music...this is the epitome of the type of playing I enjoy. It makes you think on stuff. Very beautiful.
Solo for flute, alto flute, piccolo -- Minimalism at its best. Very slow...gotta pay attention when things happen. It's a very quiet peice.
Quartet for 12 tom toms -- Minimalist drumming using the above instruments. Kind of off sounding at times...very erratic at others...seems spontaneous.
Three Dances -- This is a favorite of mine. this is where John (or whomever played at the time) played on a 'prepared piano'. Interesting sounds from the piano. Minimalist as well.
Williams Mix (1952) -- something like Montana Mix.
---------------------
Steve Reich
Violin Phase -- GREAT GREAT peice of work. Very repetive violin loops that start to phase out of one another. I think 4 violins play this...and they all don wonderous things with a simple loop. To get everything sorted it out it took roughly 15 min. It's sheer mathimatical brilliance! MUST HAVE!
Piano phase -- same thing as violin phase but this one is 20-21 min long and i think 2 pianos play this one. Very hypnotising. Again it's repetive but wonderous things happen with beats as the song goes along... shifts all over the place with a simple loop. Another must have of his 'phase' works.
Come out -- This track I believe is the one that caught his attention for 'phase music'. He had two tapes going and they suddenly went out of sync...and well the rest is history. The phrase "Come out to show them" repeats at a head nodding tempo and sterio pans out to both left and right so it ends up that it seems the left speaker and the right speaker are disconne

Same here funkmaster. i love the bassline so much...the best ive ever heard!
BUM bum bum bum bumBUM bum bum bum bumBUM bum bum bum bumBUM bum bum bum....
And then I like it when the drummer just starts wailing on his cymbal as well!
Usually most bands that do this, them crashing the cymbal comes off as unneffective. Ive only heard two songs that 'needed' them to wail on their cymbal and that is Ny Batteri by Sigur Ros and The National Anthem by Radiohead

Cymbals are one of the most important aspects of music for me... I notice them all the time, they can CHANGE a song for me. I LOVE Pink Floyd's ride cymbals or something. I can't explain. Yadda yadda yadda. Cymbals rule.

seriously though, Exit is one of the best songs they've done... it's on The Joshua Tree, and it's very dark and about suicide I believe... although I read it was just about murder... it's a great song though that starts off really slow and quite and builds to an amazing climax!!
