tr626 coming in the mail, as well as a yamaha sy22 synth and
korg dw8000 synth. the effects unit is an alesis microverb
III.

i think i just want to get a sampler to sample my idividual
drums.

for some reason, drum machines seem to lack a certin kick to
em.

dunno

The Alesis fx are nice. I've got a Midiverb 4.

Here's my fx wish list:
Ensoniq DP4 (the original 4in1)
Lexicon PCM-80 (costly reverb, but affordable if you work)
t.c. electronics Fireworx (costly super fx thingy)

-P

ah the TR626 is fun. :) I just pulled mine out a couple days
ago after months without it. if you haven't used it yet, be
warned that it has some very cheesy drum sounds.
let me know about that sy22. I'm curious.

my wish list:

nord rack 3 (or whatever the newest one is)
xv-5080 sound modual (for real sounds)
akai s6000 sampler
protools
cubase (newest one)

i think thats it for now...

Zeus : i use my yamaha ry-30 primarily as a sequencer. when
you do sampler sounds like you said you wanted to, it's
often more fun to control them w/ a MIDI drum machine.

im not sure

ive never really used sampled drum hits before... so im not
sure

i just want sounds that sound real, and with a crunch

drum machines sound plasticy

i almost got an ry30 the other day license, but i got outbid
because i was away from the computer. i still want one.

I just want some decent reverb, a couple of fun cheap and/or
weird noisemaking devices/processors, an Electribe EA-1 and
ER-1 and an Alesis MMT-8.
in the far future, I want a nord modular and maybe an
ESQ-1.

besides my tr626 and ry30, I have:
mackie vlz1202 mixer
roland mc50mkii sequencer
yamaha djx rompler/keyboard
yamaha tx81z fm synth
akai s2000 skampler

I also have a defunct tr606 and poly800, both of which I
miss dearly.

im kinda getting more impressed with software stuff lately

i think ive made my best stuff on reason alone

but i still need something more powerful

I was really in love with my RY30 for a while and then the
Yamahaness of it started to irritate me (there's something
that pisses me off about the sound of newer yamahas - they
sound high-quality but "empty" somehow). now I use it almost
strictly as a sequencer and am very happy with the results.
it's a very versatile machine though, and I see myself in
the near future (since I'm going to my parents' for the
summer and can't bring my computer) using it as a sound
module again.

the Electribe EA-1 and ER-1 both pretty much sucked. i took
mine back and traded them in for a novation K-Station.

no drums but wicked sounding synth she is.

i've got a poly800 and mmt8 sequencer. i need another mixer
and another sequencer such as a roland mc500 (ugly beige
boxes are neat). i need to sell my mc303 still and my dr
550mkII. i need a feckin sampler too.

I used to think that what spurred the creation of my best
music was the growing power of the equipment I used.
I've found it's the opposite - devices/instruments/toys with
"character" and enough options to explore but not so many
that it gets messy, are the most fun to use, and thus make
you want to make good music. I think I'm going to try to go
"back to my roots" this summer and strip down my set-up a
bit in favour of minimalism and making the most of what I've
got. (that and I don't have to pack as much crap onto the
airplane)

well, i do agree that its not all technology that makes good
music

but i do think it goes along way

even richard d james himself couldnt make decent stuff with
some of the shit equipment out there

yeah, I'm glad I got a sampler, though the learning curve is
steeper than I thought.

hepburnenthorpe : what is it about the ER-1 and EA-1 that
sucked? I tried the ER-1 in a store and it was a blast
controlling the sound of the drums in real time and it
seemed very cool and conducive to the creative process. I'm
not trying to argue with you here, I just would like to know
why you didn't like 'em.

heh...I'll bet you'd be surprised...
limitations force people to work harder and also give them
boundaries that they can become familiar with. I think it's
much easier to become intimate with an instrument whose
limits you know and whose capabilities are not infinite.

my best piece (favourite piece that I created) was made with
a poly800 being played in real-time, being distorted by a
Danelectro distorsion stompbox, recorded both directly and
through a mic at the same time (so you could hear the reverb
of the room and the clicking of the cheap, velocity-numb
plastic keys). I made several "mistakes" while playing it,
but I still think it's beautiful and I can't bring myself to
touch it at all. somehow, it's perfect.

im more of a perfectionist i guess

i want the exact sound im looking for

and some of the equipment out there just sounds like utter
shit

offline license from out of nowhere on 2002-06-12 21:44 [#00263010]
Points: 865 Status: Lurker

but people have made really beautiful things out of utter
shit. it's all context.

I was a perfectionist before, but I found that it was
killing my creative energy. keeping that energy alive is
more important to me than making things that sound really
nice.

not saying that your way is wrong, just offering a different
point of view.

i've never tried an ea-1 or er-1, but i didn't like my mc303
because it's an all around box. i prefer everything in their
own boxes, rather than one.

same here, hev. that way it's easier for my brain to figure
out what everything is doing (and I can separately
process/mix things)

i've got a yamaha tg 33, which i think is the rack version
of the sy22. it's got some quite cool sounds...not v.
editable, and has no filter :( but has a load of effects and
a cool vector control which you can mix four sounds together
with and detune :)

does it sound kinda grainy, maybe a little cheesy?
