IDM = stupid name.

What is your opinion about this.
IDM = Intelligent Dance Music. It suggests that other styles
are not so intelligent. A lot of IDM is not danceable.

In 92, when the music had attention in the underground scene
it was just called techno. In 10 years time i have heard at
least 35 names for this kind of music. I can't remember when
i have heard the first time of IDM, it is probably a new
name.

If you think about it. . . intelligent dance music IS a lot
more intelligent than your average shallow dance music.

I think of dance as dumb rave stuff with pounding 4/4
basslines. I like Experimental Electronic Music (EEM)..
Nice ring to it

rephlex hate it - from their site:
it's not "intelligent", it's not "dance", it's not "music"
it's so much more... it's "braindance"

doesn't braindance involve the word DANCE?

dumb rave may not be "dumb" rave - there is a hell of a lot
you can do with a four 4 rhythmn-- ifit wsn't for acid house
etc there would be no warp records orrephlex and that -
extremley creative dance music - l
there is an awful lot of run of the mill middle of the road
uncreative "idm" - genres are irrelevant

braindance is a welll stupid word and the logo is ridiculous
as well - it's pretty lighthearted i reckin

"EEM" reminds me of "EMO".
I'm not so fond of emo.
but it pisses me off when my friends call what I listen to
"techno" or "electronica".
I call the music I listen to usually by the artist's name,
or by what the artist seems to be going for like if it's
minimalistic or dubby or kind of nostalgic or whatever.
I also call it "skronk", "experimental", "arty", "abstract",
and when I'm feeling corny, "futuristic". depends on my
mood.

I can understand how it's arrogent and all... calling your
music intelligent is pretty stupid... but, I don't
understand why a group like Autechre are considered
intelligent DANCE music... IDM to me makes more sense for a
group like Orbital or something... their music is dancey,
and is intelligent, and what not... I dunno, I'm gonna
shut-up now...

but it is a stupid name!!

The ''intelligent'' part suits this music... although it IS
a bit arrogant to blatantly use that word in the frickin'
genre name...

The dance part... ick. You can dance to ANY music. Hell, a
lot of this stuff is a much harder (if not impossible) to
dance to than most music...

*bjorks himself* Well.. That's true. A bit condescending to
the other genres, don't you think? As if the "rock"

down to each other. Stupid, young, impressionable music

IDM
Braindance
Armchair Techno
Drill'n'Bass
Fungle
Spunk Jazz
Experimental Electro

Any others?

When I talk about what music I'm into, I DON'T say IDM... I
always say electronic music.

Which, unfortunately, makes people think of rave music...
genres are so... agh. Like it or not, they exist...

Only two kinds of music to me. Good/bad... the genre thing
just makes it tough to discuss things with people sometimes.
Far as I'm concerned, The Beatles and Autechre are ''good
music'', Blink 182 and Eminem are ''bad music.'' :-]

hmmm, actually I find genres make it easier to discuss
music... I think you do need genres to a certain extent, I
mean it just doesn't make much sense to say to someone that
Aphex Twin and The Beatles are both music, it is, but it
doesn't really show the difference...

offline The_Funkmaster from St. John's (Canada) on 2002-06-13 01:58 [#00263347]
Points: 16280 Status: Lurker

but, I do think there are way too many genres now... I
remember we had a discussion here about all the cores,
beatcore, speedcore, blah blah blah... it seems there is a
genre for each separate song in electronic music, and it's
crazy...

offline Ophecks from Nova Scotia (Canada) on 2002-06-13 02:07 [#00263356]
Points: 19190 Status: Moderator | Show recordbag

Actually I should've worded it differently... genres ARE
helpful in explaining things, I guess... when I say ''IDM''
(which I HATE), at least you know what I'm talking about...
I hate the term, and the only reason I use it is because
it's understood what artists I mean when I mention it.

But it's tough, because... well, what IS IDM? BOC and Aphex
sound nothing alike, at this point. Autechre doesn't have
much to do with Amon Tobin... but if I say ''I like
electronic music'' (I say that a lot to people outside this
IDM loop), people think ''rave''... if I say IDM... they
don't know what the hell I'm talking about! Genres... ugh.
They can simplify things or give wrong impressions.
