Guilty Pleasures!!!

What artists do you LOVE listening to, but it's not
something you'd, uh... brag about...

For me... Diana Ross and the Supremes!

Download their version of I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie,
Honey Bunch), and look me in the eye and tell me you don't
love it! You can't do it! This is PERFECT pop! The
production is just immaculate... think it was Phil Spector.

Stop in the Name of Love, Respect, It's in His Kiss, Baby
Love... I love this group.

Ain't nothing wrong with Soul/Motown/Atlantic singles. They
were the greatest pop songs IMO; great choruses and melodies
with quality instrumentation.

It isn't so much of a guilty pleasure, I guess... but it
usually isn't my cup of tea to like or listen to girl
groups! Damn, pop was great in the olden days.

I really don't think pop music was any better then.

I think that the passage of time has weeded out all the
crap.

The B-52s 'Love Shack' is now on the radio. Now this is a
class tune. Its a great summer song. I always pair it with
Dee Lite's 'Groove is in the Heart'.

IMO good pop is the hardest kind of music to make. Because
it swims in a sea of trite, good pop must work extra hard at
sounding like a unique experience. I mean, listening to
so-called IDM can most often be quite unique because it is
less often replicated and sounds fresh.

I'm a sucker for great melodies, especially great pop hooks;
hence my love of Windowlicker (IMO the greatest pop tune of
all time).

You have a point there. Though to me, modern soul r & b
sounds weak in comparison to the 60s/70s stuff. I mean, what
contemporary artist can compare to Marvin Gaye's 'What's
Going On?' lp?

Really? The Beach Boys, The Beatles, The (teehee) Supremes,
the Stones, the Kinks, the Who, the Doors, Hendrix, Cream,
CCR, all kinds of great bands that could be considered
pop...

They were all great, and I would consider them ''pop''...
they were popular! Sold records like mad. That would have
been a nice environment to be in, lots of innovative artists
also selling like crazy.

Well, there's lots of bad 60's-70's pop, too, but more pros
than cons! Tons of nice bubblegum one hit wonders, too.

There's lots of good 80s pop as well, if you're into new
wave. :)

It's hard to predict what will stand the test of time in the
90s+, record sales aren't always reliable - Paul Revere and
the Raiders are a good example from the 60s.

As far as the current state of R&B, I'm not a listener, so I
can't comment on that...

People always have a chuckle at Bob Marley, but I think his
music is so heartfelt & simple , I just ignore the drugs
reference ... people assume you're stoned when you say U
like Bob but that never put me off, so its not guilty
really...

Really Guilty pleasure ? hmmm...

still liking the Smiths (lets face it you're not supposed to
these days !)

I'm not sure about the 80s, it was a pretty dire (straits)
decade for pop music at least. The production has dated more
than a lot of 60/70s stuff.

Anyone like Daphne & Celeste? "Ooh stick you. Your momma
too, and your daddy..."

offline Ophecks from Nova Scotia (Canada) on 2002-06-12 10:08 [#00261855]
Points: 19190 Status: Moderator | Show recordbag

Blech, I'm not too into the '80s pop scene... I agree, the
production of '80s stuff, most of it, has aged badly...

Jimi Hendrix's guitar tones sound great even today, but a
lot of 80's synths sound great only when used in a fucking
Weird Al parody, or something... I love retro sounds, but
only stuff that's pre-1974, or around there... synthesizers
seemed to mark the advent of severe cheese... hmm...

Now the SMITHS are great, my favorite 80's artists by far.

Morrissey was and is a cunny. Johnny Marr's guitar work was
great though.

You're right Ophecks, Jimi's guitar work hasn't dated. I
mean, listen to a Merman I Should Be on Electric Ladyland,
that sounds so fresh today even.

Yeah, Johnny Marr is great. I love the guitar in This
Charming Man. I love ringy guitar tones.

Morrissey WAS a bit of a dick, probably still is. ''Hang the
DJ!''

ok nice thread cos I have a lot:

queen
(in spain its not cool at all to say you like queen... its
sooo comercial)

pulp
(in this MB i feel that people would look at me like
thinking "here comes the pinky popish" if they knew I love
pulp)

moby
( I just have "play" and I have to recognise I like that
album... though I hate the man, its also a problem only in
this MB, outside seems to be very apreciated)

chemical brothers
(I love the first two albums)

fatboyslim
(so far you may think I have the worst music taste in this
MB)

and well its enough for today... I dont wann get banned for
my bad taste... hehehe

I like pulp since their first releases back in 85.
but the release I like more is Separations and pulpintro
(1992-93) which have some electronic touch... added to
jarvis´ incredible voice and lyrics

I love 'Just Dropped In...' by Kenny Rogers and the First
Edition (in the Big Lebowski). It makes me want to dance
like a loon.

Madonna has made some good stuff; Ray of Light lp for
example. She has a knack of getting good producers in
though.

I liked Madonna's work with Mirwais more than Wiliam
Orbit's.
pity that 'music' was produced by them both, and not by
Mirwais only.

I guess The Residents perhaps? Nobody seems to like them,
but I do... And Renaldo and the Loaf, I always get 'what
the hell?' looks whenever I play it.

And to the person who was embarassed for listening to Fatboy
Slim and Chemical Brothers, you have nothing to be ashamed
of. If it wasn't for those 2 artists I probably wouldn't of
found out about Aphex Twin and all the other electronica
artists I'm into now, they kind of started it for me. And I
still like to listen to them now.

production work but I can't really say he's a guilty
pleasure.

Also, I listen to The Chemical Brothers and the Crystal

I'm not ashamed of it.

I do have to say though that I don't listen to Fatboy Slim
