Is Rock Dead?

Chimp Systems from Vague Island on 2001-07-17 11:43 [#00015782]

D'ya think guitar music has had it's day? There doesn't seem
to have been any proper musical 'force' in guitar stuff
since Grunge (I'm not counting nu-metal, cuz its just dumb
WWF music for 12 year olds). Even the NME has given up on
it. Bands like Radiohead seem keen to distance themselves
from it . .

Is the game up? Or do you think that it's just a blip?

Wizards Teeth on 2001-07-17 11:51 [#00015783]

I think the guitar has been used to its full potential.

There are only so many subjects that can be sung about and
there are only so many guitar sounds available.

I think there will only be a guitar revival if another
guitar genius is found (example - slash from guns n roses)

The mathematical possibilities with computers are endless,
the guitars six strings and effects pedals have fewer
permutations.

ITS DEAD. Game over, finito.

dirty little bitch. on 2001-07-17 11:52 [#00015785]

it will never die. as long as people can make a guitar sing
it will always be with us. at the moment, i think people
have been distracted by other things....
i is going to see red hot chili peppers this summer. they
kick arse!

wizard - you don't play the guitar do you?

Chimp Systems from Vague Island on 2001-07-17 11:58 [#00015789]

Wizard - what happened to Barry? Is he dead? Is he chopped
up in the freezer? Did you feed him to Balrog?

Wizards Teeth on 2001-07-17 12:25 [#00015794]

Barry has gone.

I don't play the guitar. I used to have one a while agobut
got rid of it.

I play computers instead.

My fingers were too fat for guitar use. I think I may have
elephantitus

chicken paste man!! on 2001-07-17 12:37 [#00015798]

well i don't.
and from what you said wizard i'm not surprised that you
don't play the guitar.
i am of the opinion that you can do anything you want with
whatever you have - it's the imagination and soul that
counts.

Dew from many leaves on 2001-07-17 12:40 [#00015799]

I agree with chicken paste man 64.2%

dew - you're not a maths teacher are you?

Dew from many leaves on 2001-07-17 12:44 [#00015803]

No I'm not, retired long ago

p.s. chicken paste is good

chicken paste man!! on 2001-07-17 12:45 [#00015804]

i know that!

Wizards Teeth on 2001-07-17 12:46 [#00015805]

I disagree, I bet you can't make a lovely salad out of a
guitar (without using chicken paste)

Wizards Teeth on 2001-07-17 12:49 [#00015808]

For the attention of chicken paste:

chicken paste man!! on 2001-07-17 12:50 [#00015809]

what? using the guitar as the utensil for preparation or as
the main ingredient to the salad.

Wizards Teeth on 2001-07-17 13:01 [#00015811]

Ingrediant

chicken paste man!! on 2001-07-17 13:04 [#00015812]

course i can. rocket and guitar salad.
simply smash up your guitar and put a sprig of rocket on it
and then - bon apetit - ram it your face.

Wizards Teeth on 2001-07-17 13:28 [#00015825]

True.

Try drizzling pheasant tears over the top of it to give it a
little kick

Chimp Systems from Vague Island on 2001-07-17 13:32 [#00015829]

So that's settled then. Rock's dead, salad's the thing these
days. All the kids are selling their guitars to buy big
wooden bowls and massive lettuces. There's a cucumber on the
cover of Rolling Stone. All the stars are sniffing cress.
It's a funny old game, this music lark innit?

Loe from holland on 2001-07-17 13:33 [#00015830]

Guitar music will never die. Guitar is always needed in

Chimp Systems from Vague Island on 2001-07-17 13:34 [#00015832]

I post a message and every bitch answers, c'mon. Put some
thought into it. I dont know, sometimes I feel like i'm the
only cool person left in the world.

Chimp Systems from Vague Island on 2001-07-17 13:36 [#00015834]

Right, that was the clone, who has decided that copying the
Vague Island bit will be more convincing. Just for the
record, I'm not posting anything for two hours now, so
anything that does get put up in my name is NOT ME. I'm off
to come into the eyes of the clone's mum and make her wash
it out with petrol, skank cunt that she is.

No I just reckon that modern methods of making music have
become a big distraction. The problem with computers is that
you can sit down for hours on end and make somethingtruely
unique and diverse but you can't play it over like an
instrument. It's all saved in memory. Guitars are very
challenging to learn and, when new technologies start to fit
in nomally as instruments, guitars will be back again. There
are always effects pedals and enourmous numbers of ways to
embelish what comes out as the end tune. Jonny Greenwood
from Radiohad revolusionised the guitar in ways that hadn't
been seen before and sooner or later it will happen again. I
think I remember reading somewhere that Squarepusher plays
bass guitar in case anyone cares.

Radiohead haven't given up quitars they have just sort of
put them on hold to see what else they can do. I have read a
lot of interviews and other bits and pieces to find that
out. I'm pretty shure. On the other hand they will never
make "The Bends 2" because, like all the greats (AFX,
Beatles...) they keep changing their style of music to come
up with fresh ideas everytime which is why no matter how
much their albums have changed they are always amazing in
their own way.
