Odd subject I know buy does anyone know how long Oils take to dry?....I've got 10 pieces waiting to finish off for an exhibtiton and possible prize but am having touble with Oils (first time with this medium - most of my stuff is digital sculptures so Oil is very new to me... Also, how about acrlyics?... Any ideas appriacted...i.e. Help...:).. |

oils take for fuckin ever to dry, could be weeks, you can play about with it forever. How thick are you applying the oils jand? |

if you water the oils down with a mix, but not so as you lose the colour you want it will help with the drying but if you're applying the oil straight from the tube you've got a long wait on your hands. |

About a week? It's a good couple of days.....I know that! To use a hairdryer would be a bad idea!!! |

yep dont use a hairdryer thats silly......you should make your paintings face your car exhaust and start it up..... or just hold 2 of them and flap them like wings...thats how davinci did it |

some oils never dry permanently! depending on how thick you applied yr paint it could take weeks! if you used a lot of white, and applied it in thick amounts, it could take over a month. to speed up the process next time, use a japan drier > just add it to the mix of your paint [not too much though!] and paint a bit thinner. never, ever use a hairdryer! what you can do, and i have done [but be very careful and do not take your eyes off of it] is cook it in your oven! yes it works, but be careful not to scorch it! the best alternative to painting thickly and drying quickly is using a heating bulb, or if you have the cash, a food warmer like you use in restaurants like mcdonald's. the previous three techniques are applied and used by professionals, but like doing anything for the first time, never take yr eyes off of it! sorry to be stressing this, but a friend of mine just through his in the oven and buggered off to watch some boob tube and fried his piece! your question about acrylics: they are plastic based and, depending on how thick they are applied, will dry almost instantly personally i prefer oils, but i use water based oils, for they dry quicker. if you want to see some of my stuff, go here> good luck and i hope i was of some help! send us a link to your stuff! |

Try doing frescos they dry in a flash. I tried it a while back, they require deft of hand and immense speed. Ninja art..... |
