is aphex twin overrated?

charlie on 2001-07-16 00:38 [#00015301]

i'm a huge fan of the guy, but one notices a formula,
especially in his earlier stuff. melodically, he can be
relied on to do the same thing throughout different
atmospheres. his melodies often consist of 4 notes, against
which he plays with timbre, harmony, and pitch. his beats
are funky in that motorik sort of way. i have almost every
afx track available, and while i think he is definitely the
greatest electro-geek of all time, something about his
ouevre seems underwhelming. part of it is that most of
what's in print dates back to stuff he was making in the
80's/early 90's, so much of his work sounds all of one
piece. really, the only left turn in his career is SAW2,
which i still listen to befuddled, and even in that album,
you can hear little ticks that come up elsewhere. maybe
i've just been listening to him way too much. and any real
fan will probably scoff at this question, saying that his
repetitiousness is the whole damn point. anyway, what do
you all think?

Nice comments.
You should write for NME!

Some of his tracks ARE undisputably shite.

Yeah, I've noticed that, too, as I've been deciphering some
of his melodies at random, as of late:

Just deciphered Track #9 off of Melody From Mars today, in
fact. It's rather simple, but seriously catchy.

I don't think the value of music has anything to do with its
complexity, however. It's the feelings it gives
you...goosebumps, etc.

Look at Cylob, his music is all rather simple, but still
quite wicked. I appreciate the musicians who can pull that
off and make crazy tunes to boot.

is aphex overraterd?!? what the hell planet do you come
from.. no no, i am going about this all wrong..

you are certainly entitled to your opion not matte5r how
stupid, shit ... i am going about it wrong again..

what i mean is, don't open your trap unless you have some
thing intelligent to say. but in that case, you might as
well be mute... DAMN.. sorry, i just can't be nice about
his topic.. sorry sorry sorry.

nene on 2001-07-16 01:46 [#00015308]

he sounds like himself. what a crime.

|REFLEX| from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on 2001-07-16 02:35 [#00015319]

shutup. really.

Ok, maybe your right in your opinion, but when will people
realize that these are mere opinions, I can't fathem the
number of times this kind of thing has come up in here,
other places and in real life; most of all. Its your
opinion, and it may be biast to say such thing and want
people to believe them as fact?

Anyway, I don't agree with what your saying at all. Some
songs are simple, yet complex when you break it down, the
melody, the reverb. Whatever you wish, its there. You see
something in one album, and I see something else in yet
another. Its ongoing...

I personally enjoy his older works a bit more than his newer
ones {im waiting for the new shit to come out!}, they are
extreemly well done, and I think they have more imagination
put into them, rather than ambition of bettering ones self
in the world of his own music.

His newer stuff is great, just not as good, and thought
provoking. - You see this is jusy MY opinion.

Anyway..... yeah.. whatever, have a good one.

>:D

Yeah, I guess most of his earlier material has a distinct
formula, his own aphex style tracker like beats. But his NEW
material is completely unique compared to anything.
Windowlicker is a shining example. Every song (well all
THREE of them anywho) is very imaginative. There seems to be
a different formula for each of these songs. Selected
ambient works (I only have vol. 2) is similarly unique, but
I don't like it unless I'm in the right mood (background
music, when thinking about other more complicated music
would be distracting). I think analogue bubblebath and
caustic window sound similarly composed because they sound
like they were made with a tracker, using typical tracker
layout and composition. I wonder if that IS what he used.

XMoB from Chicago on 2001-07-16 06:45 [#00015339]

If you listen to most artists of a specific genre alot of
their music sounds so much the same its pathetic, no
originality at all. but with RDJ you hear a unique sound
unlike anyone elses. of course it might sound similar to a
few other tracks he's done on the same album but if you
listen to aphex twin, then afx, then polygon or caustic
window you'll definetly notice that they all have their own
style and sound different from one another. and as for his
music being simple, well at times it is but yet is also
complex just as reflex said, sometimes keeping music simple
can be a very good thing, eh just read what reflex said
couldnt say it much better myself

|REFLEX| from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on 2001-07-16 07:41 [#00015354]

Hm yes.. thank you. I think that its a valid question,
just.... not too important.

chicken paste man!! on 2001-07-16 09:31 [#00015390]

yep.

Chimp Systems from Animal Chin on 2001-07-16 09:39 [#00015393]

I would say yeah, some of his early stuff, when you look
back now, all follows one of two formulas - 1) Lush acoustic
/ analogue melody against melancholy strings, underpinned by
electro / techno beats or 2) atonal melody line against a
backdrop of horrible distorted hip-hop/ techno beats.
Thats not to detract from the tunes of that period, bcuz 90%
still sound ace today, but I think RDJ was playing it a lot
\'safer\' than a lot of people thought.
To be honest, I think his melodies pretty much still follow
the same formula, but seeing as how he spends so much time
on his hyper-drum patterns we should let him off.

Stone from Hell, U.S.A. on 2001-07-16 22:41 [#00015602]

Over-rated? I THINK NOT!

Anyway, yes many of his melodies are quite simple and
basic...almost stark. But thats the beauty of AFX, taking
something simple and beautiful and layering it so it's
complex...adding schitzoid jackhammer beats or little violin
parts or basic electronic noises.

He's the shit. Period.

there are 2 kings:
David Bowie as an all-round ( singing) musician the most
important and prolific in the past 30 years by far, spanning
every musical genre except country music.
At age 54 hes still the coolest motherfucker around.
Besides Aphex's stuff, Bowie's 1995 OUTSIDE album is the
greatest album of the 90's IMO.Sorry, but it blows anything
else besides Aphex out of the water. Its dark , brooding,
dense, bizarre, eclectic and musically all over the
map...from ambient to industrial, techno, funk, dance
etc......
Buy it if ya can...

Aphex Twin, the King of creativity, the greatest most
amazing progressive instumental solo artist of the last
decade and now.
Incomparable!!!
Some people might argue this one with me but in a few years
he will still be the shining light of all.
Should have been born as Bowie's wacky son.

I really don't think Aphex is the "best" electronic music
has to offer...

I'm a fan, make no mistake. But honestly, I find some of his
stuff fairly average, and other stuff absolute crap (eg,
Analogue Bubblebath 4). Add to this that it's been a long
while since he released anything truly amazing- and it seems
to me like he is somewhat over rated.

Ultimately, I don't find myself listening to his music too
much anymore

But hey, full credit to him, and I can understand why other
people view him in such high regard.... I just can't share
the sentiment

He's done some great music. Don't over analyse it, just pop
it up there with all the other pioneers and top electronic
music artists and simply enjoy the music.

Where did they get that ridiculous Techno Mozart thing from?
I think he was lucky getting picked up by the press, and
that if they'd picked up on some other berk making slightly
different techno than the norm we might be saying "Hey, Qrum
O'Phlyad, overrated?", but still, full power to his mouse
mat.

It's hard for me to give an opinion... I find a lot of his
music sounds dated, more so then a group like Autechre, but
when it was released it was probably mind blowing... it's
just, I really wasn't a fan when most of his music came out.

offline Babaouo from Dolce (Monaco) on 2006-07-26 22:12 [#01943890]

he has not released anything that great in a long while.
it is to the point that when he does i will probably not be
in a mad rush to get it. he loses no props. just my
attention span.
it is like watching Andrei Tarkovskys Solyaris the wait
becomes so long that you either fall asleep or walk away
from it. now there are parts that are just fucking amazing,
however not enough to keep relevancy. he will have to
reinvent some shit before he is fucking amazing again.
