Hehe, I take heat for listening to IDM on MP3 all the time...
Thing is, I just don't hear the difference... I mean, I have a couple Aphex Twin albums which I NEVER listen to, because I have them on MP3, and they sound... erm... the same. It's just sound... I guess it's SLIGHTLY inferior, but I only notice it if I use headphones. Which is almost never. I turn it up full blast, and I hear everything on the Drukqs MP3s that I hear on the ''real'' Drukqs, it's the same music... I'd be hard pressed to tell which is... uh, fake. They're the same.
As for the ''joy of having the real thing'', I know ALLLL about it, I have 400 CDs. I know what buying an album is all about... and I get the same buzz just by downloading something... it's just noise. The convenience of MP3s is just great. Burn your own CDs, use plugins to fuck around with tempos/pitches and everything, every song is just a click away, playlists, I mean... it makes listening to music on CD seem so fucking full of hassles. Oh yeah... and it's free! I've got better shit to spend money on than a plastic or vinyl disc. I can't afford all the music I want, I'm a college student! Is that an excuse for ripping off the labels, no, but I'll give them all a quarter so they can call someone who cares.
Yeah, yeah, have a heart, think of the artists, think of the crappy little garage band that you're stealing a couple of bucks from every time you download... eh, I'm the son of Satan, I'll live with the horrible knowledge of my cruel sins. :-/
Fuck, if Napster didn't exist, I never would have bought ANY IDM... at least they raped me for three IDM CDs, at least... not like I ever touch them.
In conclusion... I'm no less an IDM fan than somebody with every RDJ release times 3... everything on vinyl, CD and tape.
And I'm willing to be mocked for my cheapness, because I looovvve MP3s. :-) The medium I choose is MP3, it's awesome that some people are really into the collecting thing... but I'm not, I blew enough thousands of do

Fuck, I was typing like a madman there, it didn't even fit... :-/
I just said the sound quality thing is overrated. I notice it if I force myself to. Even then, it's 99.9999% fine as long as you don't have a badly encoded MP3... and they're few and far between, now.

I agree, as long as it's encoded at 160 kbs or higher and NOT with the Xing encoder then soundquality is sufficient for me...

Once mp3 came along my CD collection got smaller and smaller, I just didn't seem to care about them anymore or follow up on ones I'd lent out. I currently have about 5000 .mp3 files but the big up is that they're all killer no filler, I'm very strict with them and delete stuff I don't like that I may have got from a friend.
I buy a lot of mp3's legitimately too, sometimes its the best way.
SO: how many mp3's do you have?

At last count:
268 twelve inch singles (I went through a phase of buying about five a week when I started working full time)
84 vinyl albums (mostly second hand)
37 seven inch singles
193 CD albums
12 CD singles (bit of a crap format imho)
about 40 ancient cassettes
and about 17 gig of MP3s (90% of which I never listen to)

I dunno how big it would be now, and the demographics of it would have really changed, my tastes are far different now. 550-600 CDs or something (I've really cut down on my CD buying, used to buy more back then), a couple hundred vinyl (I basically just inherited half of that), maybe 20 cassettes.
But the bulk of it is digital music. Dozens and dozens and dozens of DVDs worth. Slimy, but enjoyable, and I buy what really impresses me and what I can afford, which isn't as much as I'd like.

its ranges from gwar to traject to kraftwerk to can to.....
but i think i have about 500 cds
and many many mp3s, but i really only use the digital stuff if i absolutely cant find the cd/official release
also i have about 200 tapes, but i dont have means to listen to them

I'm considering selling a lot/most of my CDs. But I'm a packrat and I think I'd regret the decision even though I haven't touched most of them in a good 6-7 years. Don't you regret selling them?

How do you store your MP3s? I think I remember you saying you stored them all on harddrives or something, and one crashed, I dunno though.

no i dont regret it because i never listened to them, i had some pretty poor taste in music back then - i mean really bad kids stuff - what can i say i grew out of it, all of the stuff that i have been buying since then however, i am way more into - the internet definetly has helped me - it allows me to find stuff that i like and that i like after repeated (REPEATED) listens and considerable time.
its funny now whenever i buy a cd i make a cdr copy of it right away and just the copy to listen to it and file the disk away in my collection - that way i have easier access to the music and i keep my entire collection on my pc that way all i have to do it fire up the laptop see what i feel like listening to that day, grab the copies and off i go - i also buy much more music now a days than i ever used to - i just hope i dont grow out of what i am listening now in like 5-10 years, i will have about 700-1000 cds by that time and have copies of all!
i would regret selling video games do you know how impossible it is to set up the older game consoles now a days! i remember i tried to set up my genesis and it was dam near impossible! i think i was missing some kind of outdated converter...

quote:Amon: march 5, 2007 on leaked copies of foley room:
"well the debate about illegal downloads has obviously been raging for some time. some blame it for the crisis the music industry is currently facing, others herald this as a new utopian era for the consumer. contrary to the oversimplified views sighted by both ends of the spectrum I believe this to be a fairly complex issue with radically different implications for different artists and labels.
with this in mind I see no point in entering into debate on the general issue here. nor would I consider it my place to tell people what they should or shouldn't do. all I can comment on with any certainty is how all this has affected me personally and in light of my nearing release this might be of interest to those of you who've expressed an interest in my music.
over the last few months I've received a surprising amount of mail from people who'd downloaded 'foley room'. the comments are very positive and many encourage me to "keep on doing what you're doing" for which I am thankful.
today, the release date for my album, it's unlikely that you will see it in most high street shops and after the initial run it's unlikely that you will be able to order a copy even from online stores. this is because in-spite of more people having access to and apparently listening to my music than ever before, the predicted sales of the record were so low that it didn't justify the manufacture or distribution to any significant level. strange? not when you consider how hard it might be to convince any retail outlet, physical or digital, that they should try and sell something everybody could already get for free months beforehand.
so what does this mean in the wider context? who the fuck knows. like I say I won't speculate on the wider picture and you can draw your own conclusions as to what this means with regards to my own future output. again I stress that I'm not talking about what should happen here. I'm not saying I should be able to 'keep on

doing what I'm doing' or even that my record deserves to be bought. all I'm saying, mainly for the benefit of those who might otherwise have been unaware, is that if you personally like what I do and wish to continue hearing more then the only way that will happen is if you support it."

With the advent of the internet it was inevitable that, in general, the arse end would fall out of music sales.
How many talented visual artists (painters etc.) can make enough money not to have to work? Not very many at all...the reason being that anyone can buy paper/a bit of canvas or use a wall and a couple of tins of spray paint.
The music industry managed to commercialise itself initially through the lack of home recording equipment. Then the invention of the cassette changed things, then the recordable CD and now the internet. The medium of music is just so common now it has, in the most part, lost its commercial value.
Most music makers are just going to have to face up to the fact that just releasing music is never going to sustain them financially and ask themselves whether they wish to continue to release music for artistic reasons.

Amon <3 good read
I didn't buy Out from Outwhere because it bored me but I'll think I'll be buying Foley Room, I know that after listening to it via downloaded copy of it about 6 times.
But there is a lot of music I've downloaded and enjoyed without reimbursing the artist, there's no doubt about it. It sucks that as his popularity seems to be rising, his records sales might actually be dropping, the dark side of all this. I've bought a few of his albums in the last few years soleley because of the exposure I've gotten to him from the internet since I've been here, but I know I've stolen from other guys that I... didn't like as much, but still deserve more than they get.
I wonder, is he going to get another git with Ubisoft, or...
Pen Expers- I think I have 400gb, most of which I've never listened to and much of which I never will. You just can't listen to all that, it's not even possible. It's all about some sort of obsessive compulsive hoarding.

youre right. the internet is a great tool to help small artists increase their fanbase but it does kill their sales at the same time. music shops are already feeling the pinch (look at music zone/mvc in the UK). i think artists like amon who have a relatively large fanbase for an 'underground' act are going to be hurt by this the most. he doesnt have the mass market appeal to push a lot of mainstream units and hes not small enough for his stuff to be rare and coveted by a devoted group of followers but he does have a large number of fans who will just go and download it because its easy and free.
im not sure if im making any sense.

Since I've been buying CDs, I guess. Which was before I was into the internet. Napster boom obviously made it much easier to get ahold of stuff I wouldn't have been able to get ahold of otherwise.
But I think it's torrents that make it much easier for the insane hoarder because you can grab extremely large artist discographies in one go. One click and bam, you've got 40 Fall albums 24 hours later.
Jivver- tons of us buy his CDs and his ''complaints'' are very reasonable... there's no reason why an artist shouldn't want to make money and no reason why he shouldn't make more. Maybe I'm biased because I personally think he's fantastic, I used to be a real Amon Tobin fanboy and I still really like him. You do of course have a point, but I'm glad he got he a gig doing a bigname game soundtrack and I hope he gets another one (since Ubi Montreal is doing it again). I'm happy for him.
