Hmmm, mine, hands down, bar none, is easily John Digweed, the best dj in the world. Unlike other superstar dj's like Oakenfold, he is not cheesy in any way, and I admire him because he truly loves djing. . .
My second favourite dj, and I have to mention this man, is Deiselboy, America's number 1 dj and my own personal favourite drum and bass dj.
What of the rest of you?

Yes, Mixmaster Mike. Once you've seen him scratch you know why. The guy scratched the entire track "3 MCs and one DJ" together using one turntable. I was totally stunned when I saw that. RDJ has put him on the 'respect list' on Analogue Bubblebath.
I admire Kid Koala because of his very inventive use of sounds. He scratches with chicken sounds, dolphins sounds, cartoon speech, etc. Check him out if you can.

Well two turntables with a mixer in the middle. Play one record and fade that in to the other record on the other side and go back and forth. Records? Cause you couldn't do it with tapes...
They have cd turntables now...but they look really dumb. Turntables just ooze cool..

Now you just SAMPLE guitars on a fucking piece of vinyl, blimey!
Thanks Amon, I understand now WHAT they do. But it still seems stupid as hell to me. :-/

dude, dont even talk about sampling and all that. You are obviously into electronic music (youre on the aphextwin boards). if you say sampling is dumb, then you gotta reconsider all of IDM. no ones actually playing it, like a real band. Its not noises made acousticly.

Hurrhhmmm... I just don't get it... are these records they spin things they make themselves, or are they using other people's records... are they actual ALBUMS? I don't see the point, unless they're just messing around with the equalization or something, or just switching from song to song... is that what they do?
I'm serious, it just isn't registering with my brain! I don't see the point of ''mixing'' two records, why not mix them before hand, then you can spend the whole show using your hands to scratch yourself or something, rather than stand there doing things to records.

go buy the Portishead (live in NYC) DVD... you will see a trip-hop DJ spin & scratch & run the sampling behind a band... and then you will realize that it is used as an instrument & he's not really just mixing two records together just for fun.

ok... well like dj shadow, for example...
i saw him perform.
he had 2 turn tables, 2 cd turntables, an effects controller, and a sampler.
the cd players, had the core parts of the track.
meanwhile he would trigger off samples, and do effects.
in addition he had a record collection with him, and he would take a record (someone elses) and just play a little sample from there, and do effects on it, and scratch.
so its like, on the spot samping. he can change it how he sees fit.
djs go through thier records, and find little snipits they like, and put a piece of colored tape next to the cue point, that way they can access it easier later on.
so... its like improv sampling.
its very hard work all of this. he has to run around triggering samples, doin effects, beat matching the samples on the spot.
at one point, he took a record, and it was just a drum solo, and he would cut from his song to the record drums, and it was so awesome. he did really inovative mixing with it.
so... yeah i hope that helped.

I'm not big on remixing DJ's at all. I respect them, in the since it's unbelieveably hard, but I just don't care for them. So, I guess my favs would be:
DJ Shadow DJ Sasha(own Xpander EP)
Yeah, I just care for the ones that make their own music.
Kid Koala is damn good, he's a different style of DJ from the norm, but damn good.

Thanks, Zeus... it's slowly coming together...
But, I don't think I like that stuff. It sounds tough to do, I've gotta respect that, but I've never been a fan of too many samples. Like things cut out of movies or other tracks, stuck there in someone else's track. I've never liked that.
You can't really do actual compostion if you're a DJ live (I'd ASSUME, anyway), and that's what I like about songs, not sampling. Sticking a drum solo from something into a song could be cool, but I'd rather watch someone play something improvised on a piano or something NOT on a record.
I don't care much for electronic music live... I just like it in my room. I've never wanted to see any of these guys live. This isn't rock...
I guess I'd have to see a DJ in action to really get a feel for it.

Ophecks: you are quite possibly the dumbest Aphex Twin fan I've ever met/heard of. . . . after all, AFX listeners are usually enthusiasts about electronica in general, and ANYONE WHO GIVES A SHIT ABOUT ELECTRONICA LISTENS TO AND KNOWS ABOUT DJING AND SUCH!!!!
Djs and djing is an essential element of electronica!!!
And also, you fools, LET ME RE-EXPLAIN THE THEORY OF DJING:
A DJ USUALLY SPINS AT A CLUB. HE PLAYS VINYLS FROM VARIOUS ARTISTS, AND DOES MIXING IN BETWEEN EACH SONG, SO THE WHOLE THING IS SEAMLESS BETWEEN TRACKS, SO THAT THERE ARE NOT 5 SECOND STOPS DURING THE PERFORMANCE.
A DJ'S WORK IS NOT EASY. HE MUST KNOW WHAT PLEASES THE CROWD, AND HE MUST KNOW WHEN TO START PUTTING ON THE NEXT TRACK, AND WHEN TO DO EXACTLY THE RIGHT MIXING.
THEY DO NOT RECREATE MUSIC LIVE.
THEIR PURPOSE IS NOT TO SPIN VINYLS OF THEIR OWN MATERIAL, ALTHOUGH WHETHER THEY DO OR DO NOT IS INCONSEQUENTIAL (since many dj's in their mixes do occasionally have some of their own production work/remixes).
Sorry about the caps thing, Ophecks and company, but I am shocked by such ignorance over djing coming from an electronica fan.
And if for some reason I irritated any of you guys, you can call me a hypocrite for not knowing who did the "Cornfield" album (Autechre, I now know), when, technically, being a hardcore Aphex Twin fan and listener of electronica in general, I should have.
