Headphones & ear wax.

Aron? from Canada on 2001-07-15 10:17 [#00015171]

I have come to the conclusion that headphones (the kind
that cover your whole ear) cause excess ear wax. I realised
this when I started wearing headphones alot. For you see, I
never used to wear headphones, reason being that I didn't
have a good pair, and the reason for that was because I
stepped on my kickin' JVC ones when I got out of bed once
(seriously I did!). But I recently got off my ass and bought
some new phones. I have been wearing them alot, usually when
i'm working on songs, which is almost all the time. So
anyways, about a week or so ago I took my new pair of ear
goggles off in the wee hours of the morn after starting a
new track (which promissed to be quite a good track when
finally finished), only to realise that my ears were
sweating quite a bit and they were filled with wax!

I'm not possitive that the headphones caused this strange
occurance (maybe i'm just a freak), but I'll be doing more
research on this topic, and inform you all of my results
when done.

Cheers
Aron?

Aron?: Yes... er.. no. I don't know, I used to own a fat
pair of really good ones like your talking about, and I
never had a "problem??" like that before. possibly its just
you, or rather your ears. I don't know, I wouldn't be too
conerned over it, ear wax, i think im correct, is like snot,
body waste. .. or that "stuff" in your eyes in the morning,
dust, dead skin.. blah blah blah.. what all else. Im sure of
it. So.... take a shower and clean your ears I think. I
clean my ears everytime I take a shower, maybe thats it.

>:D

wt: I'm not sure if you were serious, but anyway,.. use a
cotton wool bud,.. just don't stick it in too much,... or
it'll really hurt

zetre on 2001-07-15 12:48 [#00015187]

Ye just use ´em cotton-topz thingies..ya..

I know an old person who dosnt clean his ears. the result is
like a yellow stream from the ears and down a bit. dont do
it.

and by the way, i think i might know a bit to your wax
problem, i just dont think i have it as bad as you.

does this mean that we are two freaks, or that this is quite
normal?

Scary Bear on 2001-07-15 15:28 [#00015215]

No it happens to me as well. I had to go and get my ears
surringed because m ears got extremely badly blocked up
because everything solidified (slightly uncomfortable
talking about this in front of everyone but I am telling you
for your own benefit). Yes I listen to a hell of a lot of
music, I spend a lot of time by myself and I wear my
minidisc and nice collapsable sony headphones just as if
they were another essential piece of clothing. I do not know
why this happens but I reckomend you get it sorted before
you think there is a big problem. Even as I type the
insides of my ears are like extremely thick dry skin, like
it has been grazed and is healing slowly. In both ears too.
Very painful to touch. I kid u not it is an extremely
unpleasant experience.

ear wax is for ear protection against forgein objects/bugs
trying to get in. of course excessive ear wax can mean many
things. if this problem persists, see a doctor.

Meh, I don't think it's a serious problem, I'll just use
cotton swabs more often or something.

I once pushed the cotton swab in my ear too far, and like
stabbed my ear drum, or my brain or something. It hurt like
a biatch!

I find that while using cotton wool buds gives temporary
relief, it usually actually make it worse... several hours
after a good scrape I have woken up in the middle of the
night with FUCKING itchy ears. Anyone know what the best
thing to use is? I think you should steer clear of cotton
wool buds!

Get some Beyer 531s - they sound fantastic and don't give me
waxy ears.

Scary Bear on 2001-07-15 23:53 [#00015290]

Um, you can try Earex Extra and Olive Oil. They both do the
trick quite nicely. Oh yes, Olive Oil is incredible for the
ears.

Scary Bear on 2001-07-15 23:54 [#00015291]

But it does become a problem trust me. Very bad indeed.
Especially if you like your tunes as much as I do, which is
probable.

do'nt use cotton wool buds to clean your ears. it's bad for
your ears they don't clean them properly and mostly jam/pack
the earwax more tighly at the end which isn't good.
best is to do nothing and if they get blocked go to the
doctor to have them cleaned (unlikely this is more than once
every 2 years).

as to what's causing you to start noticing it. it think the
wax was allready there but it started moving because of the
combination of more warmth (earwax getting more flowy) and
vibrations (don't turn your phones too loud, you'll regret
that in a few years with tinitus)

if you wear headphones for a long while your ears heat up
and you create more lovely yummy wax to spread on your toast
each morning :)

best of luck.

Earwax is natural and useful. It protects the ear aginst
intruders as well as it provides a buffer against continuous
exposure to loud or otherwise harmful sound. It's your
inbuilt, intelligent and dynamic earplug system. Every now
and then you have to have a proper flush of the ear to
re-booth the system and it's then a joy to hear how intact
your hearing actually is, if it's not drenched in tinnitus..

You need get a peroxide solution, it makes a bubble-fizz and
feels pretty good. Then you flush it out with water.
You'll be amazed with what you find.
