introducing is great too...

however, the first album i got by him was "Preemptive
Strike"

it was basically like, various tacks he did, but on one cd,
to counteract bootleging (or so i've read), and the
production on it is amazing, IMO,

but the private press is soooo good. Great production, great
songs.

definatly worth getting

TIMELESS album...BUt all in all the Private Press hasnt

i've listened to private press about 21 times now over the
last few days, and though it has it's moments, the artistry
isn't there as it is in entroducing.
the production, however, is.
i'm more concerned with the musik though.

I actually bought the private press before entroducing. I
had wanted to buy entroducing for a very long time but never
got around to it. and I had enough $ on tuesday so private
press conveniently came out so I decided to get it first. I
thought it is a very good album and I just got entroducing
finally today actually. I have to say I expected
entroducing to be different than it is. they are both
excellent but Im not sure which I like better yet as I have
not listened to either very much yet.

I don't know much about DJ Shadow - I got the mp3 of the XFM
Superchunk thing he did, which I really like. Is this album
just a mix of released tracks or does he make his own stuff?

offline Zeus from San Francisco (United States) on 2002-06-07 04:49 [#00253834]

he makes his own stuff, but its a collaboration of other
songs.... but like its really made into originals

its like a collage

not bad...my wife is thrashing it to death..I like some
tracks more than others..but to me it's just uneven..doesnt
flow together very well..there's his sad melancholy melodic
stuff and then his other more fun stuff...they are decent in
their own right but for me they kinda clash...

Endtroducing is superior, but the private press is excellent
nonetheless. Its hard for people to understand that
Endtroducing was pretty much flawless, and was just one
stage in DJ Shadows career. People base his (not to mention
other peoples work) against that, and because of the quality
of it, many are disappointed when the results aren't as
good.

offline diablo on 2002-12-12 11:16 [#00478863]

When it came out me and a friend sat down and listened quite
intentely... sounded good at first but about half way
through we both agreed it wasn't that great. I prefer
Endtoducing mself. BUT it's not exactly BAD, just OK.

offline DJ Xammax from not America on 2002-12-12 11:57 [#00478899]
Points: 11512 Status: Lurker

Of course Endtroducing... is better. It'll be hard for him
to repeat another masterpiece of that calibre. But then The
Private Press ain't too shabby, just a few unsure moments in
there like Right Thing (although pretty fun) and some of the
samples don't quite fit on Blood On The Motorway (a version
he did for Radio 1 was way better). All in all

Endtroducing... - 10/10
The Private Press - 8.5/10

some of you apparently weren't checking for shadow's work
with unkle, latryx, and blackalicious, cos it's as if you
were all shocked by the supposedly sudden shift between the
1996 debut and the 2002 follow-up

I downloaded it a while ago and tried really hard to enjoy
it, but I just cant get really into it. Its a good album,
but I wouldnt call it amazing by any means. Six days is a
nice tune, there are some nice ones on there, its just not
something that really hooks me.

The Private Press is amazing!! I don't much fancy
Endtroducing anymore... I've only had it a few months, but
still, I never put it on... BoC and DJ Shadow are very
similar to me in one way... Both release debut albums which
became classics, and then released second albums which I've
thought were MUCH better... and I do... both The Private
Press and Geogaddi exceed each artists previous album imo...

this is most certainly the finest disco album that i have

endtroducing always sounded a bit flat to me, and after
listening to the private press, i think i know why.

I love all the dj shadow albums (Im not counting unkle or
anything thats not strictly shadow) id say my order of
preference is:
1) Endtroducing
2)Private Press
3)Pre-Emptive Strike

Pre-Emptive Strike is only good for High Noon. The early
songs suck a large one. I love the Private Press, but I
agree that it is too confused, there are really beautiful
tracks on there like Blood on the Motorway, but they clash
too much with the crazy happy songs like Walkie Talkie etc.
I think he should have compiled tracks with one consistent
mood. Stilll, his album not mine.

what you don't like in/flux, the remix of organ donor, or
WDYSLL Pt. 2????

i hope shadow puts another album out next year, not every
album has to be precious or a masterpiece. the problem w/
shadow is he thinks too much like trent instead of like amon
tobin where there's a comfortable gap between albums but he
doesn't obsess over every single moment on the album before
releasing it. overthinking can be destructive!

mashin' on the motorway / walkie talkie double A-side single

(same tracks you can buy on The Private Repress)

our "mutual friend" met with shadow over a year ago and told
me he might remix a track but he never did.. what a dummy,
coulda been something good

'Blood on the Motorway' is just too damn good.

Overall, I must say that I enjoy The Private Press the most
out of all his releases.

As for High Noon, get Juno's cover of that tune. Juno is an
Indie Rock Band btw. Jeez I can't believe how well they
pulled it off.
