this is my topic for my english media isu (its like a big project, essay, actually, that i have to write)
im doing both freedom as in:
you can say whatever the FUCK(bushisamoron) you want, and share ur views, however zany they are, and (obviously), have access to other people's opinions, views.....
since u dont have to be ritch to make a webpage (unlike owning a tv station)
ALSO:
the way media on the internet is FREE in the monetary sense
FREE mp3s FREE information (goodbye magazines)
you get it.....
ANYWAYS: (heres the important part) its hard to find information on these issues... i know theres tons out there, its just hard to actually find in a search engine
i know a bunch of u guys are (obviously) into free music, and have posted links to sites concerning freedom of music especially
any links/info/books, whatever would be GREATLY appreciated!!!
(while we're on the issue..... what do u think about this?)

I believe in freedom on the net, but I also believe in intellectual property rights.

Off the top of my head - China and the United Arab Emirates.
They both run Internet gateways with filtering capability. I'm sure there are more.

RESOURCES PEOPLE!!!!! i need RESOURCES!!!!!!
c'mon..... u guys must have some good websites about the issue...
i KNOW there are all kinds of orginizations dedicated to free mp3s, that sort of thing, ive seen the very well done websites myself..... from links from THIS messageboard...
check ur favourites!
regarding intellectual property...... i dunno... the idea of "OWNING" anything (any kind of property) is pretty stupid imo.....
but especially intellectual property (ie: music and ideas and knowlege)
give credit where credit is due... and dont use other people's ideas and claim that they are yours!
but to actually OWN a thought... its like:
hey! come back with that idea! u didn't pay for that!
or...
give me back the vibrations in that air! u didn't pay!

We need incentives for people to create, and to be creative.
Before we get into this discussion are you only talking about artistic intellectual property? Art/Music/Text?
What about science and technology?
"dont use other people's ideas and claim they are yours"
Is that on faith? Or is it a law?

"We need incentives for people to create, and to be creative. "
if ur motivation for being creative (making music for example) is MAKING MONEY..... then you shouldn't be doing it
then ur producing a product, not making art
"dont take other people's ideas and claim they are yours"
i meant its one thing to download Music is Rotted One Note......
its another to claim that i produced it
its an idea... i cant "steal" ur idea (or information, including music)... beacuse u dont lose anything when i do
its not like im TAKING something from you... you know what i mean?
information, and intellectual property (the information contained in a book u wrote), is very different from physical property (jewelry, whatever)
they should not be treated the same way under the law when it comes to ownership and theft
i think u see what i mean.. (whether u agree or not)..... that information/ideas/music can be shared in a way that physical objects cannot, and so the same rules of ownership cannot apply
the dali lama doesn't loose anything when i learnt his ideas which i didn't pay for in the form of a book
they can be shared

"if ur motivation for being creative (making music for example) is MAKING MONEY..... then you shouldn't be doing it"
I disagree, money doesn't necesarily mean fast cars and gucci suits, it sometimes means putting dinner on the table. Some people's creative output puts them in a position where they are unable to earn a working wage, should they starve? Or should they quit their art? If music, for your example, is free, they need to make a living.
"...its another to claim that i produce it"
I'm not talking about changing the name of the MP3's to Xanatos - Music is Rotted One Note, I'm asking if it should be legal for me to burn copies of it and sell them to my friends for $5? Nevermind legal, is it moral? Should I be able to send them the mp3s for $5? Should I be able to bind an e-book and sell copies of them?
"The dali lama"
Well the dali lama is kind of a bad example because he is a devout bhuddist, but certain people do loose when you don't pay them for their services, be it from their physical or intellectual services. Is an expert financial consultant's opinion valueless in terms of $$$ because all he is giving you is ideas?
And you didn't answer my 'before we get into this question' bit
"Before we get into this discussion are you only talking about artistic intellectual property? Art/Music/Text?
What about science and technology? "

Random 5:45sam thoughts:...(ie do ya own homework you lazy f*** ;)...
The music industry has had it too good for too long....
The rising cost of CD's to the gen public whilst manufacturing costs came down kinda stuck in a lot of people throat I think...
You only need a small amount of resentment towards RCs and the moral qualms about copying IP is out of mind...
Small specialist genres potentially have the most to lose as they involve smaller indie labels...but as these aren't generally considered greedy monsters, people seem to have no problem in obtaining MP3s and buying the finished product (I'm thinking of us here in IDM land really with the above but I guess it's true for most sub-genres with smaller, more committed audiences).
And with the net you begin to wonder exactly what a Record Company means anymore...the net cuts out the middleman (disintermediation...you'll get extra marks for including that word ;), in this case the record company/distributor...if artists could somehow find a way to get money directly from consumers for MP3s then yeah, what's the need for record companies?...why should they take such a huge %?...
See if you can find Coutney Loves famous speech about Napster & Record companies ...lots of info there...
And the recent RIAA presidents speech about MP3s killing the industry (he's now resigned...mmmm)...great up-to-date info there (was only a month or so ago...)...

Xanatos: no, they shouldn't quit their "art" but if they are coming up with advertising slogans in exchange for money.. then thats more of a service, isn't it
art is the expression of oneself.. or the creation of something meant to provoke emotions, or that is beautiful, or whatever, for its own sake
copying music and SELLING it (making money off someone else's) are very different
ive never sold someone elses music... and im not saying we should
i just meant that MOST information CAN be shared without loss to the... uh.... sharing party
and as long as there is no loss involved then there is no reason not to share it
an accountant is different an accountant analyzing ur situation, and the situation of the economy and then suggesting what to do with ur money is a service
and yes, we're talking about intellectual property...... technological patents are a special case... ur taking someones ability to make money
even there..... i dont think there should be ownership the only case in which sharing of intellectual property can "hurt" people is when it affects their other 'ownings' (ie money, objects, etc)
the idea of ownership in any case is pretty stupid imo....
and yes, i realize im being an idealistic, niave hippy which i am not

in britain, in a state of emergency, the phonelines can all be turned off (except for special pre-registered numbers (police, military &TC)) -- which would cut off most people's internet access...
...also, i expect the ISPs have the power to censor us -- depends how heavy the governments get i guess -- how much pressure they begin to exert, how much money they use to bribe...and other cynical thoughts
