Everybody says that Radiohead ripped the work of ae or afx.
Im not a radiohead fan at all but i think they have just
been inspired by them. They dont hide their interest for
electronic music. People saying that ae rippped radiohead
are just silly teenagers.

For you what songs are the most autechre/afx like from
radiohead

For me thats idiotheque on KID A...

P.S: I think Rn'B are the main electronic music rippa's

Around the release of Kid A I once saw a documentary about
radiohead, and they also talked about the similarities with
Autechre. At one point they played a little bit of
"idioteque", followed immediately by an Autechre-video....
it was indeed very similar (what autechre-song was that? The
video showed some sort of a machine, mechanical things
moving, in green/white tones... it sounded great!).

Anyway I think you're right progeriak. They haven't ripped
anyone, they've just been inspired by all electronic music
like autechre... i don't see why that is such a big deal.
Also the fact that Idioteque has vocals makes a huge
difference IMO... it becomes much more "a song", and Thom's
voice is a huge part of that.

Their song "knives out" sound a little like The Smiths, but
nobody is complaining that they're ripping The Smiths. Or
for instance the fact that Thom Yorke sometimes sounds a bit
like Jeff Buckley... any band will have influences to some
degree. I think it'd just be impossible to come up with
something completely original.

when i listen to the first track off tri repetae by
autechre, i always think radiohead used that track for
idioteque. they sound basically the same. especially the
bass line.

i wouldn't say they ripped them off either, though.

They've just added some electronic flavour to their music. I
think that's a good thing...

good luck to em...

This whole idea of a lone artistic genius creating pieces in
a some sort of cultural vacuum is a load of dead-babies;
yesterdays thinking....

Everyone is influenced by external things, how could you not
be?...I kinda think of culture as a huge conversation...
everyone working and chucking ideas out, forming opinions,
trading techniques, "quoting" each other etc...

If there were more creators and less critics, the world
would be a far better place...

Of course its not a rip, they've ALWAYS been open about
their influences and that's great, as long as they put their
own spin on it. The song you and whose army is basically an
ink spots sounding track, that was the point, the lyrics and
thom's voice becomes another instrument altogether and
that's something autechre and aphex don't have, again that's
great and unique to them.

The reason idioteque might sound like autechre isn't because
it was influenced by them nesciarly (although the whole
album does have traces of all sorts of influences), rather,
it uses an old Paul Lansky sample.

Personally I think 'Idioteque' sounds exactly like the last
several minutes of Boards of Canada's 'Chinook'.

I think what the real thing people get mad about, is that
radiohead releases this electronic album. Now the general
public has no idea what IDM is, or even electronic music, so
therefor, they say "oh my god, radiohead is such geniuses,
theyve created this whole new sound." but they didnt, they
were inspired by electronic music.

IDM fans get mad, because the general public overlooks the
greatness, and contributions of IDM, and credit it to
radiohead...

at least thats my take on it...

I think it's just influence... it's not like they try and
hide the fact that they like electronic music, so it's not
like they're trying to be labeled as innovators of
electronic music...

Hm... i also agree with Zeus. When you put it like that, it
makes alot more sense why some people get upset over
radiohead.

But you can't blame radiohead for that... they have been
completely honest about their most recent influences.
Everyone's heard Thom say he bought the entire
Warp-catalogue, and one of the other bandmembers has called
the UNKLE album their (radiohead's) "golden grail" (sp?). So
really... the general public is just stupid ;-)

im not saying i have a problem with it. im just saying how
others see it.

i love radiohead. and yeah, everyone is influenced by
others.

but even though radiohead has spoken about thier influence,
their fans still dont know what the fuck IDM is, or who
Aphex Twin, because they have it so ingrained in their mind
that radiohead was still the innovator.

yeah

That's probably for the best... I for one wouldn't really
like it if "the general public" started listening to aphex
twin... i like that IDM is for the most still a little
underground.

So let them think radiohead was the innovator... i don't
actually care that much... i just know that I like both
radiohead and afx, each for different reasons... what some
fanatical IDM-fans say about thom yorke doesn't change any
of that (for me).

to tell you the truth, i don't know how many people really
think that radiohead created this new sound. since the
release of Kid A, a large number of their listeners have
dropped off. now i think radioheads fan base is mostly
composed of people like us. the general public just doesn't
get it. and im glad that they don't. actually, i wouldn't
even be here right now if it wasn't for radiohead. because
of radiohead, i strolled over to the small electronic
section in the record store, and gave a listen to boc,
autechre , and apehx. and im sure as hell gald i did.

anyway, radiohead are not ripping off of idm at all. they
are just pulling from their influences, as everyone that
makes music does. there would be no music with no influence.
i think Kid A and Amnesiac are both amazing records by the
way, as is ok computer.
