Earlier electronica...

Around '85-91, that period... who were the leading
electronic artists? I know Autechre and Mu-Ziq came along in
'92-93 with their first major albums.

But other than RDJ, who were the elite back then? The only
artists I can think of are 808 State, with New Build. I
think that was '88 or something... RDJ remixed Flow Coma. I
like that old school sound, I want to check some more of
that out.

Hi Ophecks. Interesting question. Well around '85-91'
Detroit-techno was at his peak with artists like Juan
Atkins, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson,..., they are very
famous now. Around the same period Chicago-house was born,
but the quality of this music couldn't match detroit techno.
In Europe we had in London the first acid boom in '88. After
this amazing period we find more intelligent electronica
delivered by Richard, Black Dog(=Plaid!)B12, 808 state, Kirk
degiorgio.... Hope i have helped you .

Check out some of the ACID compilations out of chigago. They
kind of join the dots between the electro and full on
electronica.

If you really want in indepth study read the work of David
Toop. As you can imagine there is a lot of histroy to cover
in what amounts to nearly 10 ground-breaking years.

Hm, toward the end of that period there was

Meat Meat Manifesto
The Orb
Shamen
Fortran 5
KLF
Orbital

and there was the whole Wax Trax scene as well. I guess some
of these bands aren't "elite."

Who is B12? He's that guy that's standing beside Autechre,
AFX and Squarepusher on that group photo on this site's
photo section. They're all on that wall. Is he IDM or
techno or what?

Merci beaucoup... I'll check some of these artists out. I
should check at allmusic.com, too, that site is
comprehensive as hell.

About B12, you can find very much information
at:http://www.obsolete.com/b12/1st-frame.html
They are definately pioneers like autechre for this kind of
electronica. Just like ae's "Incunabula", B12 have released
an Album "Electro Soma" at the artificial Intelligence
serie. This is as far as i know their best work. Definately
worth to check out!

the point is there ws no elite back then - the records were
made by unknowns from small record labels being palyed by
dj's in clubs - the cuts became famous through being played
in clubs - it wasn't until about 1989 that mags started
picking up on the (black) men behind the wax from chicago
(house/sciid) detroit (techno) and new york
(garage/house/brooklyn beats)...most of the good stuff is
still avaliable on 12's

That's right, of lot of old detroit stuff by example is
re-released and easy to find on the net. It's not so rare as
old British Electronica records like Aphex twin and Black
Dog.

Ah, 808 State they are great! A guy called gerald popped up
in 90'-91' after leaving 808.
Orbital
Orb
Underworld
Black Dog
B12
Underworld(though there first release was like rock music,
lol)
Single Cell Orchestra
fsol
moby(haha, yeah he's in there)

...all that comes to mind at the moment.

And I suggest getting some 808 State releases.

the guy standing ae in that group photo is george evelyn,
aka nightmares on wax...who incidentally was pretty big in
the early 90's pre AI warp roster, along with LFO, sweet
exorcist and the forgemasters...all of which could be added
to the list of pre 92 electronic stuff

im surprised no one has mentioned kraftwerk yet...they
practically started the whole electronic dance music thing
in the late 70's and were still pretty big throughout the
80's...

brian eno was also a very important part of pre '90
electronic music

there was also art of noise, ...tangerine dream...and
various other psychedelic bands using electronics...and some
fusion jazz artists like miles davis and herbie hancock, as
well as the kraftwerk-inspired electro-funk scene...with
guys like afrika bambaataa...

and then of course all the academic artists dating back to
the 50's

Yikes, so much music, so little time... I guess I'll start
with 808 State, since I'm at least a little familiar with
them. Flow Coma is really good.

Kraftwerk -mid 70's to early 80's

Caberet Voltaire - experimental noise (late 70s) early
electro 80s (early 80s stuff is quite good), early "IDM"ish
house (early 90s, very "Warpish", Richard kirk was signed to
warp for two records also)

Throbbing Gristle- very experimental electronic noise late
70s, pioneers. -"solo" projects including offshoot Coil
(yes, reflex, "fags")into through the 80s and on

News Order/Joy Division- late 70s to mid 80s

early 80's hip-hop such as Grandmaster Flash and "Planet
Rock"

Ministry (late 80s to early 90s) -lots of imitators,
influences, AL was the man in 1989, sort of the missing link
dance, industrial, and metal

early chicago acid house, early detroit techno (late 80s)...
lots of very cool stuff

Public Enemy- late 80s, early 90s

De La Soul- late 80s, early 90s

"new beat" and early Dutch techno (like89 to 91)- sounds so
funny now, especially since the cheesiest track gets played
ten billion times in ads and sporting events (2 unlimited-
"get ready for this")

Meat Beat Manifesto- Jack Dangers was a genius in the late
80s, early 90s, very ripped off

DHS - House Of God (all 18 remixes) but the original is by
far the best
The aforementioned Jack Dangers remix is rather classy
aswell

Dare I mention a not very well known but highly rated group
who go by the name of.....

...Earth Leakge Trip

Download this, its a Techno classic

Model 5000 - No Ufos

Id say, the early nineties were even more intresting, with
the upcoming Breakbeat & Rave scene.......I really dont know
any IDM musicians from that period....except maybe Move D !?
