Take the songs as pictures.

Before videos fucked up music, you would hear something on
the radio and as there was no video, each song meant
something different to everyone as they all had their own
mental picture of it.

Now every time you hear a song, you think of the video, or
you yearn for a video.

Use your fucking imagination, clone.

Motherfuckers are walking around with no thought - people
got their vices and their escapes and shit like that, but
nobody uses their imagination nowadays :(

Hip hop videos are the worst. Check Big Pimpin by Jay-Z for
example.

depends
i really dig alot of music videos
but you dont really have to worry archival most of the music
videos being made today are for the pop - hip hop genre
but once in awhile theres a video that really works with a
song
chemical brothers- star guitar
aphex twins - come to daddy
theres loads
there was some good ones back in the early 90s alternitive
rock era

I aint talking about my man Cunninghams work (he actually
got skills and can make a decent video) I really liked those
he made fo AFX.

Yes, im talking about cunts like Hype Williams etc etc.

There was actually some good hip hop videos back in the
"goood old daysss".

Its like if you are blind you can still see "the video" if
the song is nice....
Thats what Aphex Twins, BoCs, Squares and AEs songs are to
me.

They are fucking VIVID!!!!!!! - close your eyes and you can
picture shit, you know?

Weak ass music with weak ass videos is for the sleepwalkers,
for stupid fucking conformist assholes...

I agree in a way.... kinda like how reading a book is a far
more active experience than seeing the film....

The best videos I think are ones where the sound/visuals are
created together...rather than being tacked on as a promo
device...

REFLEX: .... tell us more....couldn't work out what you were
disagreeing with....

it's a group, or two peoples, funny :)

good music videos are cool to see and reflect more what the
artist wanted to express in his song. i don't think it
deprives you from something, many videos are only
"improvements" — a good example (if you like it, of
course) is marilyn manson's tourniquet video, by floria
sisgimondi, which makes the idea of the song clearer but
without depriving the listener from imaginating things. on
the contrary, it even incitates you to imagine more, since
it has ambiguous scenes (for example, when you see manson
with tubes/cables into his mouth, with the marionette beside
him)...

the only video i regret having seen is plaid — eyen. it's
the only one i know who makes the song less enjoyable... :(

I'd have to agree with you about a lot of hip hop & pop
videos I suppose. Style without substance, just people
dancing around and stuff is not an effective use of the
medium. In these cases, the music video is used more as a
promotional tool for an album or single, rather than an
artistic expression.

U know, your all to blame. You spend to much time watching
the tube. I haven't watched MTV since i was 10, and from
what i've heard its all crappy programing ever since. Maybe
u should just tune out...and think for a change.....maybe
read a book too

don't jump to conclusions; i don't have cable and i only
watch 2 shows a week - x-files and family guy, and neither
have been on air lately. i even stopped watching the news
cos it was all bullshit terrorism coverage.

i like (some) music videos cos i love music and i like great
visuals, and that's my word.

blamed for watching TV too often, i only watch it for
something like 1 hour per day...

(i spend too much time on my computer though)

i think archrival was complaining about how music videos
take away the listeners' imagination, depriving them of
their own feelings and thoughts about the music. you can see
something just once and your perspective of the song can be
"ruined."

I listen to music strictly for the mental images. and when I
say images, I mean intricate, detailed images, with specific
colours, emotions, and plotlines going on.

so I try not to watch videos. but this probably also means
that I'll end up working with/making visual interpretations
of music (i.e. videos) in the future.

Hype Williams & Paul Hunter had some pretty intresting
visual Ideas BACK IN THE DAY; his style was new and fresh,
but than Hype copied himself and others copied Hype, and
thats why all those Hip Hop videos look all the same today.

videos are great when done well...i think it can add to the
experience...usually with my favorite songs..ill have
visuals in my head which i would like to make into
videos...im taking a video class next year...so well see how
that turns out...

i suppose you could be right about videos ruining peoples
imagination...in my case they've only enhanced it...i guess
if people's imaginations are ruined simply by watching too
many videos...then they probably werent too imaginitve to
begin with...

seeing videos i liked is what pretty much got me into
music... my first favorite band was radiohead...and that
resulted from seeing paranoid android...that pretty much got
me into music...and then i saw the video for come to
daddy...
i probably wouldnt have heard of these artists otherwise..
