it's reggae with lots of studio trickery: crazy echo and
various effects.

ehhhh....not much for reggae.....

Its kind of considered to be the 'Electronic' kind of
raggae...
The orb had a heavy dub sound in their music. FSOL kind of
does too, but not really in more recent work (I guess the
same goes for the orb).

My thoughts on dub are mixed. I really like what FSOL did
with it and even Loop Guru, but that's about it.

i don´t like dub reggae. i do like Tosca, Pezce Orchestra,
Kruder & Dorfmeister and some others, "Fuck Dub", if you
know what i mean.
;)

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2002-05-28 05:08 [#00238256]

Tosca
Peace Orchestra
Loop Guru

As far as I understand it arent really dub. Never really
listened to Kruder & Dorfmeister... but if I am not mistaken
they is kinda more Drum n Bass.

offline corn_mouth from santiago (Chile) on 2002-05-28 05:11 [#00238258]
Points: 1321 Status: Lurker

hmmmmm nope. they re-mix tracks and fuse ´em....not very
drum & bass, although it isn´t actually hip hop nor dub.
Kruder & Dorfmeister are f*kin´awesome, you should
check´em out

Loop Guru isn't dnb by any reguards.

I guess then if not dub, then GOA, since their use of
eastern influences.

check out the track "bankrobber" the clash did with dub
producer mikey dredd back in the day, pretty hot.

as for more contemporary electronica style dub, i like fsol,
mad professor/massive attack, and even - i gotta say it -
gorillaz ("sound check", "new genious").

No... I didn't say they were dnb... I was talking about
kruder and dorfmeister.

I would call Loop Guru World Fusion. Or Techno (ghasp!!).

you all should check out the essence of dub, it's first
form: the dub originator King Tubby's work from 1970's!

dub is nice, much sub tunes and basses, reggae riffs and so
on, but i love dub'n'drums, deep sub basses with simple easy
drum rhythms..

I am not a really big fan of older dub music. The fact that
recording studio technology was so limited at the time makes
it impressive, but the sound quality is usually so poor I
can't enjoy it.

The reason I posted this thread was because I just
downloaded Thomas Fehldman's album "Good Fridge Flowing..."
and was kind of tripping off of it. It sounds like a younger
version of the Orb circa Orbus Terrerum.

The reason I searched it out was because of the Orb
connection. I have been kind of going back through all the
ellectronic music I used to listen to and rediscovered my
love for the Orb.

Respect!!!

i love the old dub, tubby, lee perry, scientist, jammy...
but when these people hit the 80's it went terribly wrong...
electric drums and digital echos replacing kettles and
tape-echos and spring reverbs, just horrible sounds and no
real feeling.

I have 'Drum and Bass Stripped to the Bone' by Sly and
Robbie, mixed by Howie B. It tends to get a bit boring. I
love the Mad Professor's remix of Massive Attack. I keep
meaning to check out his own stuff. Any tips?

Yeah the 80s stuff sounds bad. In fact, everything with an
80s production pretty much sounds cheap, tinny and dated.
Damn that decade!

That about sums up everything for the eighties in general as
far as I am concerned.

But I really can't listen to anything pre-1990. I just can't
get past the poor sound quality. Altho when it comes to some
of the older jazz recordings I am usually a bit more
forgiving.

I almost went and saw the mad professor live 3 years ago for
the low low price of $5 US when I lived in Florida. I
couldn't find a ride tho... so I didn't go.

jungle/drum'n'bass band.

the nz music scene is infested with dub and dub/ska um ..
crossovers and such .. its ok .. some good .. but because
there is so much of it, it gets a little boring after a
while. (there seems to be a distinct use of timing for the
bass and such) .. fuck my hands are too cold to type
properly.

oh man, i love the old sounds! 60 & 70's sounded so good...
all analog gear hissing and tubes distorting the sound,
tape-echoes wobbling, echo chambers and spring reverbs
clanging and vinyl cracking... sorry if i made you vomit you
hi-fist... :P

yes, although i really like king tubby for example, i can't
listen to it an hour straight.
i once did, actually three hours... i had three tubby
compilations playing and i just laid on the floor. but it
was an overdose. of dub, not any drug...

fat kaimo:

yeah some lee scratch or something can be quite fun. but
listening to more than one cd straight i find a bit much
(generally?) .. i've got the "dub missions vol 2." cd.. its
like remixes of old dub tunes by the likes of k&d, thievery
corp. et al. so i guess that could be called electronic dub
or whatever??

and to listen to certain type of music requires certain kind
of feeling for me. i haven't felt "dub" for a long time,
i've been into all these "dark canadian groups" for a while
now...

Has anyone heard Death in Vegas' firts album? There's some
good dub-inflected stuff on there. They sampled a great Sly
& Robbie bassline.

hehee... yes i care for the music... i just like different
kind of sounds, and often i don't like them to be too clean
like in a lot of todays music they are. and some people call
me a "production snob" too because i really care about the
sound, in a different way than you maybe.

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2002-05-28 10:33 [#00238643]

I like some of the 'weathered' sounds of todays artists... I
just don't like it when it not intended to sound like
that... It kinda makes me feel sorry for the musician like
"oh my god... they are trying to sound crisp but they
can't... thats so cute but pathetic" and I start to feel
guilty for some reason.

yes, i've heard "in light/in light dub" which is quite good.
it has both the original version and the version dubbed by
prince jammy i believe. andy's got a great voice. he's on
some massive attack songs too.

He's got the best voice in reggae that I've heard. I never
have got into Bob Marley for some reason, even though people
elevate him to such a high status. I never got the Beatles
either but that's another story...

Also a "dub" of something, instead of a remix, means that it
is a version/remix without the vocals in the original.

Usually if it includes the vocals it will be called "vocal
mix/remix" or "full vocal" something like that, and a dub
mix, as is aforementioned, usually excludes vocals.

Dub is something like Ragga, i think. Asian Dub Foundation
sounds like drum'n'bass mixed with ragga samples and some
downbeats. They also uses MCs. It was really sounding like
ragga, instead that it had drum'n'bass rhythm the half-time.
