Autechre sounds definately not jazzy! Listen to old Dan
Curtin or Carl Craig records, this is great jazzy techno.

there is such a thing as techno, but no one but Europeans
with bad taste are into it.

I don't see how aphex or Boc or Autechre ever got boxed into
it..hrrmm..

bill gates muppet. Americans / Canadians (all but us lol)
are really dumb and think everything is techno. it's how
they are. they're all so stuck up on their pop music.

actually, when I first started listening to Dael, I thought
it sounded jazzy in a weird sort of way... something about
the synths sound like horns...

i always see autechre as the electronic Sonic Youth - very
psychedelic yet very danceable at times

"techno..............ewwww horrible term used in america"

"I wish the word techno
would go away..."

I completely agree that music like aphex and autechre
shouldnt be classified as techno, but why do so many people
seem disgusted by the term 'techno' ?

like B3n said, this term is widely used in the U.S, for
basically every form of electronic music. The same goes for
the word 'rave' and because of that 'techno' has become such
a stereotypical term that it is completely FUCKED.

Obviously, 'real' techno is still a really unknown kind of
music to a lot of people here, which is fine, but therefore
its evenmore messed up that its image gets damaged by
prejudiced people.

examples of good techno artists:

ken ishii
steve rachmad
monika kruse
dave clarke
surgeon
john thomas
jeff mills
etc..

listen to their music before you (i'm not talking to anybody
in particular) generalise it by thinking its the same thing
as trance, house and other electronic music.

i'd agree with u on that one. i've always thought the same.

similarities: how the track seems freeform, how certain
melodies/sounds weave in and out, how the tracks build over
10mins etc

i think they are electronic jazz defiantely.

they are the electronic miles davis and john coltrane

i call it electronic music.
i think their music pushes the envelope like jazz does, not
that they sound jazzy really, but just today i was thinking
they are similar to jazz. also to psychedelic music yep i
agree, and hip-hop. didn't ae say they make folk music?

I think you may mean, Squarepusher = jazzy electronic. NOT
autechre.

offline wayout from the street of crocodiles on 2002-05-26 23:26 [#00236351]

i dont think he meant they they were jazzy in the way they
sound instrumentally...like squarepusher...
but have a similar musicality to free jazz...seemingly
abstract randomness grounded in music theory...which is
something ae and free jazz have in common...i think theres
even a review on a sticker on the us lp5 that called them
electronic free jazz.... and they have said in interviews
that they're big jazz fans...

and as far as calling ae 'techno'...it isnt so wrong...since
'real' techno (like the detroit stuff j198 mentioned) seems
to be a big influence on them ...hell..incunabula could be
called a techno album..they just kinda took their influences
off in their own direction and mixed them with other
influences...like hip hop and acedemic electronic music..
even jazz..to make someting original which cant be defined
by a genre title (idm doesnt count) which i think is what
all musicians should (or do) strive for

There's nothing wrong with the word Techno when it's used in
the right context(i.e. Detroit Techno). Sure the word isn't
used properly in America, but when it is what's so bad about
it?

Sort of along the lines of what Archrival said:

yeah...the term techno isnt so bad..considering it is one of
the few genre titles that was actually invented by the
people who 'invented' the genre...i think juan atkins was
the first to use it ...which is appropriate since he was
among the first to actually make 'techno' ...usually genre's
get titled by jounalists...leaving everyone whose actually
involved with the music with a label they hate (cough *idm*
cough)

but then of course you have all the kids who know nothing
about electronic music calling everything with even a hint
of a synthesizer or drum machine 'techno'
which can be annoying i guess...but dont blame the
word..blame those who are too lazy to use it properly

I'd say that Autechre isn't jazzy at all considering that it
is a lot of repetition which is about the opposite of true
jazz...

i really enjoy their music, i apologize for the autechre

techno...
