My rant on: Eps

I was thinking about how different artists use the EP in
different ways recently and how effective they can be.
While some just use them as introductory songs that will
later reappear on LPs, some EPs contain songs that arn't
anywhere else.

I remembering getting Freeworm's EP and LP (Vegetation =
Fuel). The EP contained four songs that are on the LP.
Exactly. Not remixed or anything. Just the same. I think
it can get bad when someone doesn't realize this. When I
bought the Port Rhombus Squarepusher EP today I forgot that
those songs are contained on the cds Budakahn Mindphone and
Big Loada. Kinda feel like you get ripped off. I thought
to myself however that at least I got 'another' cd by []<.

Then you look at Autechre and see how they use the EP in a
way that they bridge the LPs together. You won't find any
of their songs on their full lengths. They really make you
track down every single cd so as to hear everything. RDJ
does this too...he has tons of cds.

I like EPs just as much as full lengths and believe we
should get our money's worth from them.

EPs are great, its a great way to get B-sides. Come to Daddy
is a great CD. I just got Basement Jaxx's Red alert EP today
from work and its great.

EP's are great for remixes/alternate versions, and live
tracks - but it's a bit disappointing when it's all new
material (a la gantz graf, windowlicker, p-brane, in a
beautiful place out in the country, wap155) because you just
KNOW there's more where that came from and wonder why they
couldn't just have put out an album instead. the exception
is very experimental stuff that is only meant to be a
diversion from the artist's work.

Be fair to Squarepusher - Port Rhombus was released prior to
Hard Normal Daddy as 3 exclusive tracks which didn't appear
on the album. The UK versions of Big Loada and Budakhan
Mindphone don't have any of those tracks on. It's just that
Nothing (US label) wouldn't release a 3 tracker (no profit)
so they tagged them onto later albums to bump up running
time...

I agree... I love EPs, but I guess they're more for the
hardcore fan maybe, those who want, or need everything by
the artist...

The_Funkmaster : it depends... the Broken EP by NIN is a
must have if you like the genre! :)
