check this thread over at the Planet-Mu messageboard...

I certainly learnt a lot from it about the merits of FLs...I
know a lot of people diss this proggie but this thread shows
it's doesn't deserve the flak it sometimes gets....

yes, good thread. ill always believe that anything can make
good music. and fruityloops isnt just a piece of anything
its a good piece of anything so if you cant use it you
havent tried hard enough.

most people hate it cause of the first versions.

he used something like a yamaha qy70 i think the name was
it cost about 100 dollars and had a total of like 20 sounds,
he used it as a sequencer i read.

i think at some point im going to take a long list of random
house hold items and have someone pick out say 6(?) things
(pots, pans, blender, floor) off the list for me to use to
sample and make music using no other sounds. only
manipulations of those sounds. it would be really
interesting to work around the limitations.

you can sample them all for me -- and i want a sample of an
egg-slicer too thanx -- and some distorted radio frequencies

"concept music" is almost as bad a term as "idm"

I'm going to make some intelligent concept music :)

concept music is music with a predetermined concept
jackface. its not pompous.
theres a band black heart procession that made a concept
album where every song has the word heart in it. i like
them.

making an album using only sounds from around the house is a
concept album. its just a fact. not even a clever name
being that the name just says exactly what youre doing.

Eric Levander-"06:50"
This is some great concept music.
The song starts with an alarm clock folowed by some kitchen
noices , glases pots pans that are later sequensed to form
beats.
It really feels like you are in the guys kitchen , a radio
morning news broadcast in the bakround n stuff.
It is a demo that was played on swedish radio.
The artist did it as a schoolwork of some kind, very
impresive!!
Raimons introdused it to me =)

click on the link and have a listen ,its a great track =)

hell, just about every boyband song has the word LOVE in
it... so i take it thats part of the BoyBand Concept too
huh? any form of music is a concept -- so why use the term
at all? it's redundant

yeah i always have wanted to do something like that - with
me, it was someone walking down the street, humming a melody
and tapping out a beat with the coins in his pocket, which
would then merge into a song -- there were some nice
concepts behind that song which i would explain if i had the
time/inclination

but youre misunderstanding what concept music is. its
predeciding to give yourself certain limitations, or doing
things in only one certain way to see what happens. making
an album of only songs that are under a minute. thats a
concept. its not just music anymore its music with an idea
behind it not just creativity.

i know what a concept is, but i love to be patronised at
least once a day.

i repeat, ALL music has a concept, and ALL music is concept
music.

ok smart guy then when i write an album of songs only under
one minute each what do we call that process of creation? if
you have a different idea than simply going about the
process of music then you must inform people that you were
"making music with a different idea than conventional"
i mean we could just say nonconventional music but concept
is more specific.
and generally concept music is more based on full albums
with the same idea not just one song. which furthers you to
realise there is something different going on.

Do you know a piece of music without a pre-defined concept?
If you make all the songs under 7 minutes, is it still a
concept or not? The term "concept" covers too much territory
to have a specific meaning IMHO

What you are talking about sounds more like DOGMA
You know Lars Von Triers made up rules and limitations on
film making that he and his dogma mates follow.
I often work that way when i fiddle with music , make a
track with only one original sound as source for example.

exactly, this is not hard to understand that there is a
difference.

its not suprising in a world of shitty music and artists
that we could evolve the term concept music anyway. i mean
if you are going to make music with a brain you might as
well call it "music with a brain" as a style or something

not that i think concept music is even a style and its not
even something i do but im making a point that in a way it
is a rebellion against the norm and therefor should be
recignised as something other than the norm via different
name.

yeah laserbeak, that's what i think too -- just comes off
sounding like elitism --

Maybe we could call it "handicap music"...
or when sourcematerial is normally not associated with
music: "Alchemy music"(turn shit into gold)...

theres nothing elite about it.

i bought a punk vinyl once that had about 90 songs on it
that were all under 30 seconds. THAT IS A CONCEPT RECORD
AND YOU CANT SAY ITS NOT. ITS NOT BEING ELITE CAUSE THEY
ARENT SAYING ITS BETTER THAN ANYTHING. ITS JUST A RECORD
WITH A CONCEPT.

no one is denying that it is a concept -- we are saying that
ALL music has a concept, however lowly and beneath your
acceptance
