Which is better? The original one by the Clash or the
remake by Marilyn Manson?

the clash? i thought the original was by cold cell...

i recommend you the original one anyway.

there is a much more different version by coil, too (which
make the song sound like a dark march, not groundbreaking
but interesting)...

I cant think today. I saw it on VH1 the other day and Im
pretty sure it was the Clash. I searched it on Kazaa and got
too many results to get a good answer.

industrial sounds.

the manson cover version is great! one of the better
attempts, and keeps the original sleazy vibe

Marilyn Manson totally destroyed that song, and not in a
good way. Didn't they apply the same pathetic treatment to
Eurythmics "Sweet Dreams Are Made of This"?

offline BlatantEcho from All over (United States) on 2002-05-23 07:36 [#00231169]

MM turned Sweet Dreams into a nightmare anthem. Though I
liked his version rather much.

Tainted Love cover though?? His new shit is rumored to be
make or break. He is trying to go into a "Be your own God"
mode, and this new album is concept style?

iono, not like any of you give a f***

this video is a horrible piece of shit! i've liked old
mansons video's although i don't like his music (only
"antichrist superstar" was excellent) but this one is
extremly shitty. i think it was supposed to be a joke, a
parody of hiphop videos but it is so fucked up... i hate it!

I'm afraid you're all wrong as to who did the original
"Tainted Love".....

Soft Cell did the 80s version, but it was a cover of an
older song (never heard of a Clash version though?).

The ORIGINAL was a Northern Soul hit for Gloria Jones, back
in the 60s or 70s. You can get it on Audiogalaxy, and in my
opinion it's the best version of the lot. I like the Soft
Cell version though, but the Marilyn Manson version is, like
all his stuff, a lot of overblown and over-dramatic shite
IMO.

Incidentally, a bit of trivia for you: Gloria Jones was the
girlfriend of Marc Bolan (of T Rex), and it was her who
crashed the Mini in which they were both travelling, an
accident that killed him. She survived.

Well, at any rate I'm pretty sure that the Clash never did a
version.

good luck diastole1!! :)

on audiogalaxy you can even get a skinny puppy version...
don't know if it's real or fake, i didn't try it...

the original is actually an old northen soul record by
gloria jones - soft cell did a cover - so did coil
incidentally.

oh wow i can't believe someone acredited "tainted love" to
being performed by the clash, that is hilarious. to make it
clear, they've NEVER peformed that song and it would have
been totally out of character of them to do so, even as a
joke cover.

i am so glad two people here know soft cell didn't write the
song and that gloria jones did the original version. here's
how i rank the versions from best to worst:
coil (very dark and moving)
soft cell (it is a classic cover, symbolic of the whole
synth pop movement)
gloria jones (sounds so different from laer covers, i guess
cos everyone is "covering" soft cell's version, except coil
who say they covered the original and have always pointed
out that gloria jones did the original; in fact they even
have a "free mp3" of the original on their
brainwashed.com/coil media section)
manson (just TERRIBLE)
some crappy cleopatra records artist, (hopefully) falsely
attributed to skinny puppy (even worse than manson's version
if that's possible)

btw manson's version of "sweet dreams" is awesome
over-the-top rock and roll. i love it, and i am not a fan of
manson at all. he totally fucks up "working class hero" and
"suicide is painless" among countless other covers his
shitty band has done; i only like his covers of the
aforementioned eurythmics song and screamin' jay hawkins "i
put a spell on you", very well placed within the lost
highway soundtrack. his version of patti smith's "rock &
roll nigger" is ok but honestly it's about 0.1% as good as
the rockin' original (i hope everyone knows this song is
pro-black, not a racist anthem, right?).

I see manson's version as a mockery of original. Since I
hat original, I think I would prefer v2.0

I do believe this version is still charting in Europe
though, it's been there for quite a while, still @ #3?

www.marilynmanson.com should have all your
details..........
