i think the music word sometimes cares a bit too much about original sound. a perfectly good artist would be overlooked if what he made wasnt original in spite of the fact that he made a wonderful song/album. i find this funny/destrubing. i mean i too think originality is important but maybe we shouldnt focus on it as the most important thing as i fear maybe we do.

I dissagree. About what the music world looks for I mean. I agree that people will too often overlook artists with sounds that may be darivative, but an artist with a truly original sound will have a shit hard time getting signed.

true but often we think "these guys sound too much like autechre" or some crap like that. which is silly if the music is good then its good.

The only artist that really bothers me when it comes to stuff like that is cylob.

but cylob only sounds like cylob in my oppinion. people dont like him because his music is generally simpler but i think he intends it to be more childlike.

I think with most of his releases he was struggling to make music that sounds like that stuff that his fellow rephex artists were writing.

are you not aware there is humor in all his music? even the serious stuff? its childlike he intends this. music taken less seriously is a statement.

I might find it funny if it was actually witty. Or had any teeth to it.
As far as artists who takes the piss are concerned, I prefer Cex.

are you implying that Aphex and Squarepusher and Autechre are being "too" original just because they feel they have too be different? you wish that they would make more mainstream stuff... its a challenge to do that also, and make it work, but...
i don't really agree with that sentiment.. these artists are coming close to putting out what they are interested in, instead of trying to fit "genres"...
thou I think it would be nice if Squarepusher would make more tracks that are more like traditional "songs", he is so overflowing with stuff... that other humans could connect with more, but he obviously does not want too... would you rather he was forced by market pressures to release only more mainstream stuff??

i hate autechre so i'm gonna hate anything that tries to imaitate autechre...
unless it's good unlike autechre
and often whe people dismiss some band becuase it's 'unoriginal' it's becaue it's uninspired not because it sounds similar to something.

ubik: no i dont want things to sound more mainstream im just saying people dismiss artists for not being completely orginal often times. more so than say in the painting side of art where painters arent weighed at how original they are but rather how well they paint and nothing more.
you cant say autechre isnt good, its just not your taste. anyone who doesnt see that there is brilliance hidden in there(whether you enjoy it or not) is simply artistically blind.

there is no such thing as too original, and originality is good, my point is that its not everything.

I agree with you on that... I also think people like AFX or Squarepusher aren't too Original, they just make music that isn't for the mainstream. If someone thinks it's intentionally too original then perhaps the should be listening to bands like Disturbed or Limp bizkit...

Aphex Twin hasn't really ever made anything original IMO. He is really good at taking the far far far left and making it accessible tho.

Isn't making original music nearly impossible now? Everything is done before. The musical ingredients aren't original, the music itself is. And it's all relatively original... So the question is: Is it original enough for me? There is no standard "this is original and this is not"

I'm sure I listen to some unoriginal music but I don't care. Original or not, if I like it I'm going to listen to it...
