I fucking hate this country sometimes. There's a radio phone-in about this mother who has been sentenced to 60 days in prison because her children played truant. All these sanctimonious cunts keep phoning in saying how right it is and how she should abide by society's rule. Fuck rules, what about personal freedom. This country is so stuffy and repressed and stifling. I want out. |

all that stuff about prison for the woman and her truant kids makes me worried , what are they going 2 say next.... 100 days for her kids not wearing school uniform , just because it was a "rule" the reasons apply ... you know where does it stop .. its just one more little infingement on your freedom that just slides by as a rule. but you dont really think about it untill it happens to you . them you start to get concerned . |

I hear you Ceri. The British are way too stuffy. I remember a pety example in school. i had long hair but wasn't allowed to tie my hair back, which was really irritating, especially in the summer. This is just a minor example of someone saying what you can and can't do. And for what reason? It really makes me angery. This family obviously have problems and need help, not punishment. I always went to school but i had a comfortable home life and I was lucky. Some children aren't so lucky and throwing their mother in jail just compounds the problem. Its a classic case of blaming the weakes to direct attention and blame away from the system and its ills. |

Of course education is important, its essential and I can't think of anything I value more highly. The thing is that this will not help these kids get a better education. The only thing to deal with these problems is by putting money into schools and raising families out of poverty. Classrooms are overcrowded, teachers and their resources are stretched to the limit and the children often come from families who struggle to make ends meet. A meagre minimum wage of £4.10 is part of this problem. Phiz: have you learnt the language? |

jonesy: i can only speak beoken biscuits, it's difficult in Amsterdam to learn the language without doing courses, when you try to speak in Dutch, most people speak back to you in English. I'm enrolling in a course for september. |

yes it should, cause then you would get young kids who don't know any better dropping out of school just because they find it boring, and what would that do for society? I do think kids should have to go to school... they're too young in high school, and don't know enough about the world to decide that for themselves... Let the parents decide you might say, but in that case most parents would send there kids to school anyways, so making it law for kids to go to school is just ensuring that the less "strict" parents are sending there kids to school... |

children should be encouraged to go to school, but parents shudnt take the blame for their kids not going to school. Maybe the government shud set up a benefit - if ur child(ren) go to school then u get paid by the gov (bit like child benefit), if they dont go, u dont get the money. It's still a punishment, but it's just about not giving something rather taking away something. There's probably lots of holes in this idea e.g. the tax payer's back pocket will suffer, but surely this idea could be somehow implemented. I'll be really annoyed if this policy already exists! |

I definetly feel your pain, i promise its worse were i live. examples: It is illegal to form a gathering with music after 2Am. there is no permit for this it doesnt exist all parties shut down at 2am. The alcohol is 3.2 unless you go to a state owned liquor store, and there is a big sin tax if it costs $10 in California it costs $19 here. im not joking it is taxed 90%. Even the 3.2 beer is more expensive than "real" beer elsewhere. If you want to have your own Pub, were you brew your own beer and sell it, you have to sell it to the state and buy it back from them for more money. Then sell it to the public. The locally brewed beer is equally expensive, because they tax that too, and you can imagine how many pubs we have because its very hard for them to make money. |
