When confronted with a violent bear, the best strategy is to offer him a pic-i-nic basket.

I thought you 2 were about 15? Shouldn't be on the whiskey ;) Still I can't criticise, I used to be a heavy drinker...
How does bear repellant work? Is it a scent that scares bears off or do you just use it when you get attacked by them (my girlfriend is in bear country so I like to know these things)?

one thing is that bear spray (not the repellant, but the pepper-spray-for-bears stuff, the self defense stuff, u know what i mean)..
...should NOT be sprayed around ur campsite to try to 'repel' bears...
because the strange smell can actually attract them they come to investigate it...

Yeah, where she is at the moment (somewhere in Northern North America, I forget where) they keep food in a building 1 mile away from the sleeping block, just in case bears smell the food.
She's on some bear conservation scheme as a volunteer. My american cousins said that they have quite enough bears already, without them needing to be protected :)
