I just want to know what do guys who dont like the harsher
end of IDM do when faced by the uncompromising end of their
artists work..I mean almost half of each album by
AFX,Squarepusher, Autechre, Plaid, u-ZIQ...is usually pretty
crunchy, harsh and pounding, nosiy disturbing and other wise
dark..more so with side projects like Caustic Window and
Chaos A.D...so what is it..you program your players so that
half or that whole part of the of the album is skipped..

I am just curious because you hardly ever hear people like
me complaining about the sweeter gentler moments..infact
most of the fans of the harsher end tend to love the albums
in its entirety...but oh how the fans of softer stuff..go on
and on and on moaning and complaining about Ventolin
breaking the continuity of ICBYD..or Equation or the
entirety of Confield and Go Plastic being filler..

maybe that explains the popularity of BoC...pablum tailor
made for sinking into with nary an edge or challenge in
sight..

i like it all,
it just matters what mood i'm in.

if i want hard stuff, i listen to that.
if i want soft silky pussy, i do it.

The heaviest IDM I have is probably Venetian Snares... of
course there is always the gabba stuff like Alec Empire and
Atari Teenage Riot

i totally agree with you...i constantly compian that the
reflex stuff is too "sweet" and candy tasting...heh, infact
that stuff is perfect for a bunch of lil' candy raver
teeny-bopers...

I dig some of the most harshest shit ever...and especially
the harsh IDM stuff...

and speaking of v snares...does anyone have his newest cd?
the one with all #'s as the title, and the melted toy phone
on the cover? if you do contact me via soulseek, and we can
set up a trade...

that's pretty much my attitude to music...but to me the
album is the king and I feel that it is my responsibilty as
a listener to listen to the album as and when the artist
track listed the songs..because there's always a reason the
songs are in the order the way they are arranged..I know
it's a pretty kooky aproach to hearing music and that's why
I always draw a blank when the threads with personal mixes
and such come up..so when a soft tender mood strikes I will
put on an album with higher melodic content..and if I wanna
be beguiled and challenged I will put on an album with
higher frequency of that kind of material...hence I remove
the excuse to moan and complain from my self

as far as V Snares goes I only have one album Dolls Dolls
Dolls..I amyet to totally warm up to to it..it's got a lot
of skill and craft but still leaves me a bit cold..like Amon
Tobin does...I prefer the warmth and lunacy of Bogdan early
albums..just as harsh as any V Snares but tempered with
silliness and humour at this stage rather than the Psychosis
embodied in Dolls Dolls Dolls..but when the mood strikes I
think I will enjoy it...and the fans of V Snares might wanna
check out Panacea..It's heavy coroded and messed up
d'n'b(not German engineering though) but while VSnares veers
towards the speedfreak drill Panacea slows down taking in a
lot from Hip Hop only distorting it and amping it 100 times
and then cutting it up and destroying it..

its not that i dont like harsh stuff.. it really depends
whose doing it... i mean, when autechre do it, i REALLY love
it... when Squarepusher does it i hate it... i really think
that when stuff gets harsh that it has too meet a higher
standard of quality or it sounds like crap you know...

ive been known too like some of my mates music, sepultura,
fear factory, cradle of filth... and im really not into
heavy metal at... but when its done damn well, then i like
it

but thats just me

i can appreciate the harsh stuff, it just has too meet more
criteria for me too like it a lot

dude, what you're trying to say is that you really like limp
bizkit and creed but that stuff just isn't credible so you
have to listen to harsh 'idm' instead.

yeah, that's a pretty ignorant statement flea... and it's
damn annoying... just because someone enjoys melodic and
softer, less "harsh" music they are a pussy? Come on you
stereotypical, ignorant fool... I enjoy Aphex Twin and
Autechre across their wide spectrums of style... I do enjoy
Ventolin more now, and I like most of the longer, and harsh
songs on Drukqs... just because someone doesn't prefer harsh
stuff doesn't make them a pussy... goodness, that's such an
ignorant and stupid statement...

Hey funkmaster, I wouldn't go so far as to say flea was
trolling, but he was definitely laying the bait with a
loaded topic title like that...

I'm still waiting to see if my tastes mellow with age - they
haven't yet!

offline joakim from Norway on 2002-05-11 20:24 [#00215332]

personally it really depends on which mood i'm in. sometimes
i want to hear softer sides of electronica (all the boc
stuff, kleine, schnauss etc.) with all the mellow synth
lines and dope beats. other times i really want to hear
something that "hits". you know, really harsh, aggressive
stuff with mental bpm's, like bogdan, snares hellfish etc.

confield is really academically harsh :)

still, i can see your point. the harsher stuff isn't
everyone's cup of tea, so there will always be a certain
degree of controversy around "harsh" tracks like those
mentioned. hell, they're not harsh! harsh relative to
saw85-92 maybe...

offline The_Funkmaster from St. John's (Canada) on 2002-05-11 20:27 [#00215337]

yes, it just depends on my mood... but, I'm overall a laid
back relaxed guy, so I do prefer laid back, melodic music
like BoC more... but I still like some harsh music, and
basically any style of music...

flea: you know me man, im a fan of these aratists OLD shit,
the ground breaking stuff where they didnt stick to the one
style, AFX's old shit rules, ventolin is a masterpiece, the
whole album is.. all the mixes, caustic window shit
rules.... uziqs old shit rules too, same with squarepushers
gritty old stuff.....

i love the contrast....

i love it on Drukqs with all the "harsh and crunchy" drum
beats, and then the long smooth synth melodies in the
background... it's so cool

hav to admit, i'm got a soft spot for the softer songs (i
love SAWII), but harsher ones are good foor going crazy
too... lots of headaches from jumping around and breaking my
neck!

i always preferred the heavier AFX to the pussy-side of mr
james - but i like it CAUSTIC - drukqs just didn't hold a
candle to CLASSICS,which i think is a better release -- i
like the entire percussion section to be put thru an
OVERDRiVE and fuzzed up good and proper. :)

(funkmaster, did you ALWAYS sound like a tired 11 year-old,
or is it a recent characteristic?)

marlowe: haha..

Drukqs has no real "caustic" or heavy side at all man.. no
way.... Caustic Window, AB1, AB3, Ventolin.. thats where its
at for hard AFX. Drukqs has nothing to Classics and all the
such AFX style..... geez.

yeah sometimes i feel old because i got into AFX thru his

class SAWII as his hardstuff -- i don't really take (that
much) to works like SAW85-92. although i do love the RDJ

before lots of people here because these people seem to
think that Drukqs has a harder side! WHICH IT DOESNT. like
what happened to talk of Classics, Ventolin and all the
classic AFX old hard stuff? Now its Drukqs this and Drukqs
that.

maybe when you grow up you'll discern the difference. who
knows?

plus, your sarcasm needs improving - it sounds far too
contrived. some people here are obsessed with "cool" - is it
some hidden inferiority complex -- no one mentioned COOL
either here or on the DRUGS THREAD -- and yet.....suddenly
you and others are bandying it about like i, or REFLEX, or
FLEA have proclaimed ourselves the kings of cool -- i don't
think misquoting (and thats being generous) is good, do you?
maybe THAt's how a lot of prejudice is started in this

went out of his way too say that he was not a pussy and that
liking softer stuff didnt make you a pussy, so too conclude,

funkmaster...I really suggest you reread my two posts so far
Ihave contributed to this thread..you may be talking this
rather personally because of me calling you an Aphex Pussy a
few with the most affectionate well intentioned humour..I
apologize for that...but my point wasnt that in anyway that
harsher music makes you cooler..I think the consensus have
usually been exactly the opposite on this mb and in
general..if you are into listening to creating or making
harsher music you are automatically a bonehead or a hardcore
idiot..and I am bloody tired of that ...my own music is
repeatedly called not IDM..meaning not intelligent..which is
okay the people have a right to their opinion.....

my point was that the peoplewho are into the more melodic
side are a lot more vocal about their disapporval of the
harsher more difficult music put out by these artist that
they and idolize than the other way around..

if that makes me ignorant..than doggone it lemme me go out
and hunt some possums before I mount my underage
