how many of you guys collect vinyl as opposed to cd?
which vinyls do you have that you thought you would buy on
cd as well?
are you amazed at how cheap the vinyl at warp records is?
thats the end of my boring bookworm post!

The most recent vinyl I bought was Confield and Geogaddi.
The "Magic Window" side is very strange. NO GROOVES!

I just buy vinyl now as its cheaper and nicer to play. CDs
are a convenient yet horrible format. Vinyl is beautiful.

I've doubled up with DJ Shadow but that's pretty much it.
I'm not a completist.

I don't have working decks, I can't MP3 from vinyl easily. I
find vinyl distorts in the heat too easily and listening to
vinyl is a less passive experience (having to turn it over,
move the needle to skip tracks etc) making it not
appropriate background music for work.

Vinyl covers also lack a spine making it harder to locate
records than CDs. It's also a FACT (none of this subjective
"audiophile" rubbish) that CDs are better audio quality.

For these reasons I prefer CD. Still everyone's entitled to
their opinion and I admit that for mixing etc. vinyl is the
king and no doubt a lot of folks here like vinyl.

I can see that vinyl is not conducive to studying. When you
have hours to spare just playing tunes its great. Turning it
over etc makes the whole experience more alive. Sounds
cheesy I know but that's why I love vinyl more.

I know what you mean, some of my friends are into vinyl and
it is a lot more of "social" way to listen to music when you
have mates over. You can take it in turn to mix etc. and
it's good fun.

I learnt to scratch on "Intergalactic" by beastie boys, but
I'm crap on all other records... do you have to "learn" each
record or does the same theory apply to them all?

offline jonesy from Lisboa (Portugal) on 2002-05-09 15:27 [#00212322]

I still can't mix. There's no rules as long as it sounds
good. Its best to know your records really well and get a
grip of the nuances to get a good mix. It all takes time and
practice. Unfortunately I only find time to listen and not
practice mixing. I hate the working life.

I can mix reasonably well (for an amateur) it's just I can't
scratch very well. I know all the theroy (which types of
sounds work well as scratches etc.), but I can only do it on
Intergalactic :(

I don't think I'd be confident enough to do a DJ set live,
whereas I'd happily play about with re-birth in front of a
crowd for hours (given the chance!). There are lots of
"electronic" clubs in Bristol so when I move there (and get
a midi controller) I might go round the clubs looking for a
spot. Sorry, bit off topic I know...

turning over a record is a waste of energy! if i'm lying in
a comatose state on my living room floor, the last thing i
want to do is jump up every 20 minutes to change record
sides! and how would KLF's chillout be smooth if i had to
flip the wax halfway thru the track??

the full cracked version of rebirth v2.01 is easy to obtain
- i have it, but don't use it any more -- i mean too -- it's
good for acid=techno and the like - and with modpacker, you
can import your own sounds into it and stuff -- do you make
music, jonesy?

I have found scratching to be like any skill it takes years
of experimentation and practice. I have been checking the
techniques of the masters lately and they just keep blowing
my mind. They are doing so many subtle things that I
couldn't hear a year or so ago. I sometimes come up with
amazing scratches bu tfind it hard to be consistent. I think
you will just have to keep trying ceri. Watch a video if you
can.

I want to make sampled based music when I get enough money
for a sampler. DJ Shadow's way of making music intrigues me;
100% samples. I wouldn't want to clone him or anyone but
that hip hop way of music production is what I'd like to go
for. Getting all your sounds using a computer doesn't appeal
to me so much. i'm still really ignorant about equipment
and music production and have to do some research. Its all a
matter of money at the moment however.

offline marlowe from Antarctica on 2002-05-09 15:42 [#00212361]
Points: 24578 Status: Lurker

i could never make sample-based music -- it just wouldn't
feel right -- it would be like writing a novel by patching
together other novels -- even if the finished work was
great, well in the end you are just an editor -- i like to
insert samples now and then (never looped samples like beats
or music), but that's all

offline Phatbert 000 from Augsburg (Germany) on 2002-05-09 15:43 [#00212365]

oh and I recently fell in love with vinyl.
After buying about 20 tapes I moved to CD in '93 and now I'm
buying a lot more stuff on vinyl, the covers are way nicer,
even thought they're the same pictures as the CDs, and of
course, coloured vinyl is great.

A mate of mine lent me a burgundy Supergrass 7" and a clear
vinyl Cast 7".
The Cast one cost him 99p and it's limited to 5000, maybe I
should sneakily put it on ebay (hehehe) Nah, that would be a
bit harsh.

To be honest shadows scratching isn't anything special.
There is so much more technical stuff out there, the kind of
stuff that sends shivers up you spine. Afterall he is more
of a producer.

offline jonesy from Lisboa (Portugal) on 2002-05-09 16:16 [#00212454]

Shadow's scratching is sparing but that's the beauty. You
can't overdo it. Some scratching just becomes like guitar
solo wankery a la Steve Vai/ Joe Satriani.

offline Quernstone from Padova (Italy) on 2002-05-09 16:44 [#00212495]

I agree a lot of scrtaching is mind numbingly boring after a
while, but like any musical genre it will have its
afficionados and purists who will always be delveing deeper
and expanding the style. In the context of his music it is
fine but he isn't exactly pushing the boat out. My veiw is
that artist/producers should be constantly trying to
experiment. I think his scratching will sound very lame in a
couple of years just like stuff that is about ten years old
does now.

offline jonesy from Lisboa (Portugal) on 2002-05-09 16:47 [#00212500]
Points: 6650 Status: Lurker

But scratching is not central to what he does. He scratches
in the right places and keep sit minimal. As you say he's
more of an artist/producer and the tracks themselves are
what he's about. Check monosylabik to see some innovation.

Who do you like then? Q-Bert? I don't really know many.

I still can't work out how to scratch. It really takes some
doing to use the fader to achieve that sound.

I'm pretty good "live" but I just can't be arsed with
writing songs on it bar by bar, I just play. I have 2.01
too, but I can't get any mods (apart from those that come
with it) to work.

i'm collecting vinyl. i recently started though, so i
haven't got more than maybe 40-50 vinyls at the moment. i'd
really like to have some of them on cd as well, as cd's are
easier to take with you on travel. right now i'm settling
with taping my fave vinyls on minidisc.

i'm not a dj or anything, i just really love the vinyl
format, the vinyl sound, and the bigger artwork :) to me,
the vinylversion is always the "ultimate" version of a
record.

the fact that warp are pricing some of the vinyleditions of
cds a bit cheaper than the other formats are brilliant as
well. it's a way of promoting the format, and giving us
vinylheadz a quid or two extra in our pockets.

Records will always kick arse. CD's true are low noise and
true hi-fi that can only get better...but there is just
something about the sound of the scratches and pops of a
record that make it sound so awesome. I bought 2 remixes by
AFX on vinyl, i like it better than the CD, i'm gonna pick
up the untitled squarepusher single soon.

well, cool for people with turntables :)

I know that software to do it has been around for years, but
how long till a hi-fi manufacturer adds a "warmth" slider to
the CD player so you can add the amount of "crackle and pop"
and general vinyl-style distortion?

I agree that there is something nice about record crackle
and it's a shame there isn't more of it on CDs.

convert your mp3s to wav, load them into fruityloops, apply
the VINYL plug-in you downloaded from my site, and create
your own recordesque music -- then export the wave,
reconvert to mp3 in Cool Edit Pro, and VOILA!

I know, I can do it in software, but It'd be cool to have it
as a piece of hardware on a hi-fi.

It could have hundreds of scratch and pop sound effects
built in and randomly apply them.

Rega already make a CD player that's meant to appeal to
vinyl addicts as it has a tonal balance similar to a
turntable. Obviously it generate realtime crackle or
anything!

I think it's called the Rega Planet... they've been making
turntables and arms for years and they're considered to be a
decent British hifi manufacturer

Me, I like CD AND vinyl... although vinyl is DAMN
inconvenient

It's funny how "audiophiles" claim that it sounds closer to
the original than CD. Bollocks! 4/5ths of all CD data could
be stripped out with no noticable difference. Notice I
didn't say discernable, I said noticeable- The human ear
isn't physically accurate enough a device to pick up the
minute frequency/volume changes supported by CD.
