dead cities, but lately ive been listening to lifeforms.
fsol is a big favourite. i was hoping the new album would be
a FSOL album but it's an AA release with the hippy thingies
of the isness but maybe a little more electronicky

dead cities

very closely followed by life forms

my favorite early shit by them is a tie between Metropolis
EP and People Livin' Today...now that is catchy dance song.

Lifeforms (1994), hands down. Cascade EP is the same era and
has some brilliant pieces of music. One part of Cascade is
included on Lifeforms, I just think that there were better
parts to take from the EP (pt4, with the bursts of resonant
bass, for example).

I never got as much into Dead Cities. ISDN has some really
great tracks too, like Egypt.

Alright, for the first time I managed to reply twice in the
same topic. My taste in FSOL seems to remein unchanged.

Have you ever heard their compilation called "earthbeat?"
It's a compilation of all their early 12's off the Jumpin
and Pumpin label. Check out the songs: "Coda Coma", "Theme
From Outburst", and "Skink." All of them are ACEEEEE
especially Coda Coma.

Earthbeat is awesome. I found my cassette copy the other day
and put it on and realised how much I love most of the
tracks. Fucking Coda Coma is one of the best things they've
done. Sounds like it'd fit on ISDN pretty well too, I
reckon.

Dead cities. It was my 2nd venture into music without
lyrics. Kept my attention the entire time because of it's
narrative quality.

Hell Yeah, Coda Coma is kickass. I made a thread awhile
back suggesting that people download it. Not sure how many
did, I know of a couple.

Cascade. I downloaded Revpersona's "Coda Coma" and that was
good too in a classic, breakbeat, umm,`Papa New Guinea
styleee.

ISDN, Dead Cities (we have explosives being my least
favorite track, but thats probably due to over exposure to
it), and the first Amorphous Androgenous album.

the stuff pre that was too trance/techno-y. i prefer their
soundscape/melodic/experimental side

the stuff post that is too hippy in a "i bought this at the
nature store" kind of way .. i waited forever for those new
albums was really let down. oh well.. I still love these 3
albums and always will.

btw.. just in case some ppl dont realize it, ISDN was a live
album that was performed/recorded over several isdn
connections/streams to a couple radio shows and live
audiences. it also includes the stuff from far out son of
lung (better versions imo).

We Have Explosive is my least favourite track on Dead Cities
too. Partially due to overexposure but mainly because I just
don't like it, really. I can't say how relieved I was to
find out it was actually a piss-take.

purlieu: yeah, there's really no comparison to it and the
other tracks on dead cities, such as 'first death in the
family'.

Life Forms is a near perfect album.
Dead Cities runs a very close second.

In fact, ISDN and Tales of Ephidrine were also very good. I
just wasn't too keen on SOME of Accelerator, and the fucking
jewel case sleeve was ugly as shit.

In Fact - FSOL are my absolute favourites ... just listen
them on LSD ... what perfect story tellers ...

offline Torley Wong on 2004-07-18 19:30 [#01280038]

I like Dead Cities the most. Briefly here's why in my book:

-standout, catchy singles like "We Have Explosive" as
featured in Mortal Kombat... yeah it was a hooky take
-nice sampling of Blade Runner (?) on "My Kingdom"
-the music videos were really imaginative too
-during this time, I have fond memories of constantly
checking the FSOL info pages to see WHEN their next album
would come out. Needless to say it took awhile so I kept
listening to Dead Cities.
-a diverse variety of tracks
-glistening sheen on "Max"

Biggest downside for me would have to be the last "bonus"
track... was that even by FSOL!?? Anyway I was drifting off
to a restful place the first time it played through, and
that jarred me unpleasantly. :(

They should follow up ISDN with something like ADSL or OC3
for this day and age :) Ahhh I do miss them.

The hidden track (Dead Cities Reprise) is by Headstone Lane
(an artist on FSOL's now defunct label EBV). I love the
traffic sounds in it, but the rest is pretty average.
I'm now praying for a live Amorphous Androgynous album. They
played at a festival in Sweden last week with a full live
band, and did a bunch of tracks from The Isness and a load
from the forthcoming Alice In Ultraland. Only one mp3 has
surfaced so far, recorded from a Swedish radio station.

Damn....I need some new FSOL. Anything at all! I love
everything they've released from Accelerator---->Dead
Cities. Just....the new Amorphous Adrogynous isn't doing it
for me.

There's a FSOL album to follow Alice In Ultraland. Last
thing I heard Gaz was saying it'd be soon, but considering
Alice was supposed to be out at the beginning of the year
and it's only just being finished, don't expect it until at
least 2006.

Just curious if you'd know, but which out of the two are
more active on the FSOL alias? I always assumed Brian would
be since he started out as Humanoid and then Gaz came along.
Isn't this new style of music more Gaz's idea after he had
an enlightment? Or is it pretty much 50/50 all the way
down.

offline purlieu from Leeds (United Kingdom) on 2004-07-21 10:05 [#01282220]

I'm all honesty, I don't really know. I'm nowhere near far
enough into the whole FSOL circle to know anything like
that, although I'm very curious myself. Gaz always states
that Brian is as involved as ever in the production of the
new Amorphous Androgynous stuff, although I believe Gaz is
definitely more in charge on the initial composition... most
of the tracks are born from him messing around on his
guitar. But I do think Brian's still more involved than it
sometimes seems.
