So I was looking for some CDs today at HMV downtown, and stuff like SAW and SAWII and Squarepusher: Go Plastic cost at least 32 dollars each! 32 DOLLARS!!! What the fuck is that all about? I mean, I can see why napster and all those things are working (R.I.P. napster) so well, with prices like this. I don't want to go mortgage my house because I want a CD. Shit.

even $17 or $18... is rediculous... we should be paying $13 at most for a single cd.

Jesus, I can't find any electronic album at ALL over here, except the RDJ Album. Forget about finding Autechre or Squarepusher or BOC, it ain't gonna happen over here...
Not that it matters, I wouldn't buy them anyway. :-) MP3, baby.

yeah, hmv has very high prices usually for these kind of albums. it's better to buy them at an independant record shop. they often have reasonable prices. fuck hmv!

here I pay like 18.99 for a new release, and for some electronic album it would probably be like 22 or 23 bucks... in music world that is... downtown in the local record store it might be cheaper... but it might also be more expensive depending on the album...

but then by the time everyone gets their piece of the pie, well the price ends up being around 20 bucks... it's shocking yes, but what can we do?
I remember a few years ago I went to Sams and they had some new vinyls there... and the price of them was more then the cd... is this true, that vinyls are more expensive then cds?

ha! im going to st-jérome next week. looks like i wont be looking for albums over there...
mortsto-x:
there's plenty of electronica in canada, just not in small towns. it's probably the same in the us or uk. in big cities like montreal, ottawa, toronto, etc., you can find pretty much anything. but the big "commercial" record stores, ie hmv, dont have the best selection. that's why you have to look at indie recors shops.

new release range from about £12.99 sterling to £15.99, more for double album
and HMV invariable hike their prices on previous album when a new release comes out.
e.g. BOC MHTRTC normally £12.99 when GEOGADDI is released MHTRTC jumps to £14.99
"His Masters Voice" indeed. More like His Master Vultures

Question: are you talking 32 dollars Canadian or U.S. ?
If your in the U.S. most IDM is an import from England or somewhere in europe that has been shipped here which adds to the cost, also the Pound vs. Dollar. A lot of IDM is from smaller record labels like warp & rephlex. They dont print cd's in very huge quantities like say brittney spears cd is cheaper than IDM because its from a bigger record label that press a zillion cd's. When they press in that quantitiy they can charge less.
The cool record stores that have all the IDM and rare stuff, usually know whats what and whats rare, then hike up the price, so if you can find what your looking for at a big distributor like Media play, amazon.com etc. I try to buy there, but you cant get vinyl at media play and most other big distributor stores.
