.....sounds really different from the "...endtroducing"stuff. it's more like UNKLE.
-monosylabik and -you can't go home again sound really more technologic, and "drum n bass".... more "digital" than "analog"....there a very few sample, it seems, i also doubt he used some vynils to do these tracks.
anyway, even if at a first hearing they sounded pretty er..."strange"....,i really like them, now.
anyway, it doesn't seem so "innovative" stuff....what do u think?

but hip hop (instrumental) is his game, he pretty much invented or brought about a rebirth in it...I think just doing monosyllabic is the furthest out of his field he can go

just cos gangsta rap came to the mainstream don't mean other hiphop disappeared - DJ shadow hardly had a #1 single huh? there was plenty of real hiphop going on - of course the dumb schmucks who buy the majority of records wanted the fronters rappin about killin, hoes, blunts and all that shit, but real hiphop never left us

The new album is called "The public press".
It's been on the net for ages, and you'll find it on audiogalaxy for example.
I think it's mostly good and I'm going to buy it when it hits the stores, but some of the tracks got the gayest vocals ever.
(gay as in highpitched male trying to sound female, whimpering about love, no offense)

Of course, but you could say that about anything. Music reviews aren't good for much for example (unless you know the reviewer to have something of a similar taste to yourself).
And when is say "is better" I mean "is better in my opinion" of course. That goes without saying.
So I guess I agree with you :) It's funny exchanging views anyway, just won't get you very far..

oh my god.. go to http://www.massiveattack.com/ right now and check them out.
They've released three great albums, all very different in style (one more than the two others), and the fourth album is supposed to be released this autumn, I think.
Their latest track is I against I, which features Mos Def on the vocals and is quite good (it's from the soundtrack for Blade II, which is probably bollocks otherwise)

you'll shit yourself but the entire record was done with samples, just like endtroducing. in the early recording sessions shadow THOUGHT about hiring live musicians but he decided against it. anyway, monosyllabik is an experiment he did to see what he can make out of sampling two bars of music. the whole thing comes from two bars of one song. pretty fucking impressive. and yes it's a tribute to the warp artists, not a new direction for him.
anyway the new record kicks ass. much more innovative than unkle. props to josh as always.

dj krush has been a major player in instrumental hip-hop since the early 90s; also check out coldcut and the entire ninja tune labor for more of that since the EIGHTIES. as much as i love shadow, he wasn't the first to do what he does (tho he's definitely the best).

IMO coldcut are completely different. I know they've been doing that since then but I think its wrong to compare them because of their hip hop influences, the styles are much more different and shadow shouldn't be lumped into a 'trip hop' genre. While I do like coldcut, too much of their work isn't serious enough. Ninja Tune has made some good stuff though and more beats & pieces and the erik b & rakim remix are pretty key in the evolution of it all. you can nearly always find someone else that was doing it before another person, but with each artist it progresses.
and you say it was all done in samples, sure, but the production techniques have changed somewhat. He's now moved into using a proper studio and protools (though I should think his mpc is still a major part) and that has to have an effect on the finished product

i think coldcut and shadow are perfectly comparable; they're both sample collage artists and they both do hip-hop. and shadow makes a lot of serious music, but he also makes whimsical stuff like coldcut. i'm not saying you can hear a coldcut track and think it's dj shadow, but they're in the same realm.
here's an interesting article about shadow's latest techniques.

I liked some of it more than Entroducing, which I didn't like at all, completely missed me I'm afraid... Private press has some great tracks, but some of it is extremely boring to me... There's this one song with dude singing and it's embarrasing, well, perhaps it was meant as a joke but it's too long for my taste... There's also some live cutting stuff in the end, with Kut Chemist and some more scratch dudes, which I'm not sure if it's part of the album or my friend just put it there to fill the CD. Technically stunning, but otherwise rather pointless IMHO...
