What things have you guys found good for sampling to compose music? i mean as in found sounds and the such...I've found that chewing apples, sliding ice in vases, throwing objects across the room, scissors and many things work really well..i also sampled my knee cracking and whenever i tell people that's the sound in my song they start to cringe cuz they never realized :)

-wires hitting metal -laughter of various kind -my head vs. the microphone -noises in shopping malls yep.

trust me, if you have an egg slicer and a distuned radio, you don't even need any real talent to make excellent tunes :D
i have a great soundfont which is a drumkit made out of things like pots, pans, drills, pipes and shit
basement dweller is a song i made utilising that soundfont :)

Sampleclichés(from 'sound on sound') are: Dog barks, Smashing glass, Blown bottles, Cars starting, skidding to a halt, Saucepans, Stuttering vocals à la "N-n-n-n-nineteen", Anything from a James Brown record, American evangelists on radio or TV.

I have a really screwed up guitar amp thats picks up AM radio. So I could be playing an old Hendrix tune or something then all of the sudden "partly cloudy with a chance of rain" and "coming up in the next half hour : why global warming wont affect Australia" or something. Very cool to record.Very funny. Some digital recorders can be powered by batteries so you just plug in a mic and record things. But they can be a little on the expensive. I just use a micro tape recorder for anything that cant be sampled from my computer. I have a mixer and a mic for anything that can.

Ross, Marlowe, or anyone who is into snaging environmental sounds, do you have a really nice sound card, or how do you get clean samples? My mic input makes for some really dirty recording and I've loads of ideas.

jupitah- my sound card isnt really especially nice, but what i majorly do with samples, is if they sound grainy, is to go with making them sound more aged and decayed, i can sometimes get clear samples, but if there's grain, filter and fuck up the sound a bit to make it sound like it's in some basement or something..I'm not sure if that helps, but i hope you can find a solution somehow

Id like to sample various 'squish' sounds from fruit and vegetables and just use the squish sound for absolutly everything in the song. From bass (dropping a watermelon) to high hat (popping a cherry tomatoe).

jupitah...you need a good omnidirectional mic to get clean sounding recordings...with 50+db
if you already have one and youre still getting dirty sounding recordings then you probably need a better soundcard

Try this : but a fill a cup with just enough liquid to cover a small part of the bottom of a straw, then blow itno the straw while moving it up and down past your mouth, makes really cool sound! Just got to fugure out how to record it.
