Why do you people call it an avatar?

Main Entry: av·a·tar
Pronunciation: 'a-v&-"tär
Function: noun
Etymology: Sanskrit avatAra descent, from avatarati he
descends, from ava- away + tarati he crosses over -- more at
UKASE, THROUGH
Date: 1784
1 : the incarnation of a Hindu deity (as Vishnu)
2 a : an incarnation in human form b : an embodiment (as of
a concept or philosophy) often in a person
3 : a variant phase or version of a continuing basic entity

none of these terms seem to apply to our ID pics we have
here on the mb. where did you guys get that word from?

From the edit your ID page:

Upload a picture (GIF or JPG, max size: 100 kbyte

I don't see the word avatar, or avitar... so... i don't get
it.

(a visual representation of ourselves - however inaccurate
it may be ;)

I have a theory. One of the first popular massive
multiplayer online roleplaying games was Ultima Online. The
main character in the old Ultima games was the Avatar. So
maybe people started calling their online characters
avatars. It eventually trickled down to messageboards and so
forth.

strictly, only if it's a picture of yourself you can call it
an avatar.

but does it really matter?
