Why do some of Aphex's tracks have this bad static in them sometimes. 4 on the RDJ Album has this lots and so do a lot of others. When I make music and that same static comes up it usually means I have too many things going on at once at too high a volume. When I turn their volumes down or reduce the number of samples it usually goes away. Why would RDJ leave that in? Autechre doesn't have this kinda thing going on...neither do many other acts.

maybe its the recording techniques he used while recording the samples that make up the tracks...
crappy mics maybe...you have to remember that all the strings on the rdj album are sampled from him playing actual violins and stuff
and that tracks like xtal from his early work were probably made and recorded on reletively cheap gear and crappy tapes
and maybe, like boc, he likes the lofi aesthetic of static...i do..
im actually thinking of making a bunch of songs that sound as if they were recorded from am radio

I was thinking like maybe he used junky stuff....but wasn't sure. thanks for that.
That would sound good if you could make your songs sound like that. What would be interesting would be each song going into eachother like someone was changing the dial. If that was a cd concept that would be highly interesting.

I dunno, but it seems to work for him sometimes, although to much of it can be annoying. And sometimes messing up can sound good. Ive made some tracks where Ive screwed up, and then just went with the flow instead of doing it all over agian. And it didnt sound too bad.

I actually like that static sound from afx. Often it does actually sound like he's done it on purpose. It kinda makes his tracks sound more authentic.

it's clipping, which means it's recorded too loud, if i'm correct.
i once stated on watmm that that's what's missing on drukqs: that it sounds too clinical or so
they didnt agree though

Did you like the piano tracks?
I think they are the best work aphex has done apart from saw ii...

Yes I do, sorry when I think of Drukqs I think of the, for want of a better term, the drill tracks. But yes I love the piano tracks, they are definitely "warm" and "human" and not clinical, but they are thrown to sharply into relief by the noisy tracks. I still think drukqs is more a compilation than an album, for the listener to take out the bits they like. If I seperate just the piano tracks it's lush. But that's all been said before so I won't bore you by banging on about it again.

isnt it interesting that avril 14th sounds the most warm the piano tracks, while you hear some machine playing it (more likely a sample of a metronome though)

Some of his most solid sounds are on the drill tracks. Really rubbery. Different. That's all. I love em

i dont agree about clean sound being less warm... loads of indie rock/lo fi craps are recorded that way & i dont feel anything while listening to it; it depends on the trax(petiatil something on drukqs is pretty bad recorded but with that melody it sounds ace)

All depends on the production.... simple as that.
Give something to Steve Albini, it won't sound the same as to Nigel Godrich. Both can give you the same emotionnal response in the end, while sounding opposite.
I like the alterning of tracks in Drukqs. Really for me Richard appeared as a very mature and professional person with that album. I don't mind the clean/dry beat tracks and the same goes for the static and dirty piano tracks.
There's a reason it's like that.
