firs film, really great in-depth book
book what surprised me is the first rough drafts, they are really really bad, they make no sense, Lucas is really good at thinking up abstract funky names, but if American Graffiti hadn't been a run away surprise success, no way would have star wars been made, the rough draft is essentially a list of funny names and planets and that's it

its quite interesting how radically different some ideas were
characters like deak starkiller
first rough outline even had mace windu in it but was called mace windy, luke was a girl at one point, han solo was a massive green alien with flaired nostrils just loads of variations,

I recall reading, and I don't remember where, that a lot of what's good in the early Star Wars films came about because people weren't shy about saying no to Lucas. By the time the prequels rolled around people had stopped saying no.

yes definitely, I think he really assembled a team of fantastic people, industrial light and magic, setting that up was a utterly fantastic move, I think Lucas was better at organising a production, and was very talented in a visual sense rather than ever being a traditionally good film maker

Didn't Brian de Palma watch an early cut of it and then help Lucas punch it up a bit? Would have loved to hear his "feedback" for Lucas.
Also Paul Hirsch the editor apparently basically saved it from being a mess.

I think also saved it was the dialogue rewrites by the Huycks that made it more spunky and less pedestrian

FOURTH DRAFT LUKE Not unless you can change the unchangeable or alter time. THREEPIO I’m sorry sir, I’m only a “droid” and not very knowledgeable of such things …not on this planet anyway. As a matter of fact I’m not even sure which planet we’re on.
LUKE That’s all right. There is nothing anyone can do about it. You can call me Luke.
THREEPIO Thank you, sir. I’m Threepio, Human Cyborg Relations and this is my counterpart, Artoo Detoo.
REVISED FOURTH DRAFT LUKE Not unless you can alter time … speed up the harvest … or teleport me off this rock.
THREEPIO Uh—I don’t think so, sir. I’m only a droid and not very knowledgeable about such things … not on this planet anyway. As a matter of fact, sir, I’m not even sure which planet I’m on.
LUKE If there’s a bright center to this universe, you’re on the planet that’s the farthest from it.
THREEPIO I see, sir. LUKE You can call me Luke. THREEPIO Yes, Sir Luke.

james earl jones's dialogue was reamped so it sounds like it was recorded on set with the other characters
