This ugh I’d make another thread for our manga and comic
book chats. Atm I’m finally reading Berserk after hearing
so much about it, and the more I’m reading the more
engrossed I am. The art just keeps getting better as well.
I’m buying the books so this I going to end up costing a
fortune. Just finished vol 7.

Reading an interview with Miura I learnt he loves a
particular shojo manga called March Comes in Like a Lion, so
I’m checking that out. I feel the translation might
be lacking but I’m loving the art which is extremely manga
in a great (and cosy) way.

I’m also starting to read Dead Dead De De De Destruction
by the guy who did Pun Pun. Again I reckon the transaltion
may be a bit off at times but hopefully it’ll give me an
idea as to wether I’ll actually want to buy the books.
Link. The art is wonderful (I love the old school
manga at the start) but I’m finding it hard to get into,
hence wondering about the quality of the translation. Maybe
I just wasn’t in the right mood though!

Whatcha been reading?

I just started de de de destruction too, like last night so
am only 15 pages in. I haven't read anything particularly
stellar recently I think. I've read:

Judge - crap
Watanabe - good and sweet
Montage - crap
It's not my fault that i'm not popular - crap
museum - alright
mother sarah - really good
sanctuary - great!

I've got a lot of travelling coming up so i need to find a
couple of epics to entertain me. Berserk might be a good
shout, it's been on my list for ages but always seems to
daunting an undertaking.

Berserk takes a few volumes to settle in but after that
it’s hard to put down. Also so far quality in general
seems to increase with every tankobon or whatever you call
the individual books.

Sanctuary is pretty good yeah, dunno the others you
mentioned.

I came across an oddity called Happy Idiots which was pretty
good.

Happy Idiots hasn’t been translated into English it seems.
I only have volume 1 of theee and it seems the others are
expensive now. LAZY_TITLE I recommend it if you can find
scans (I’d be interested as well) it’s a good (and
different) read.

mother sarah is written by otomo so i recommend that.

I'll have a look around for happy idiots but google brings
up no results for me. That amazon link won't work because of
phobias fucking viglink bollocks, just times out for me.

LAZY_TITLE for “happy idiots”

Have you read Dorohedoro? I’m checking it out on that
manga rock site and it’s ace fun!

Didn’t realise the author was a woman. Need to rid myself
of sexist cliches! I have a feeling you might have told me
about this manga before...

Woah dorohedoro looks great! I have the manga rock app so
that's next.

Wish my French wasn't so degeulasse so I could read happy
idiots, looks right up my street

It’s less practical maybe but I prefer using manga rock
online. The app is buggy and I can’t access all the titles
like I can online. Not too sure about this one to be honest.

Yeah are you on iOS? They seem far stricter with what's
allowed on the iOS app but as I have no internet in my
bedroom the app downloads are great for reading in bed/while
travelling on my ipad

Yeah iOS, i couldn’t even get dorohedoro with the app.
Seems more appealing on Android, especially if you don’t
have WiFi in your bedroom (and for travel).

really love berserk

Gosh you know I was thinking the other day that the guy must
have quite a few fetishes (most I’m fine with, some not).
He’s just finished a one shot were a small girl pees on
this huge dude warrior guy to heals his wounds, and often.
She also pees in his mouth and he drinks it to regenerate.
It’s been funny to see a lot of his fans have a meltdown
over that but not his rape fetish.

If you scroll down a bit you can see an example off someone
being extremely offended, and more drawings of this
“healing process”. Here. The art is good.

Just a short, alright comic about robot things taking over
the world. The main character has a robot globule thing in
her arm that allows her to fuse with machinery. It's obvious
that it was cancelled and they gave the author two issues to
finish it up.

Has to be a new email each time or they'll just make you go
back to your old account:

Mohamed68@gmail.com
Mohamed69@gmail.com
Mohamed70@gmail.com

Etc.

After a couple of months you'll start being offered free
netflix months on your old accounts again so you can just
cycle them.

Russ have you read What A Wonderful World (inio asano)? It's
good although fleeting.

Volume 3 of my 20th century boys "perfect edition" turned up
yesterday. Having a flick through I think they'll cover the
whole thing in 4 volumes so only another 2 months to wait
before my re-read.

Have you read Tezuka's Buddha bio? It's next on my list.

offline RussellDust on 2019-04-06 14:56 [#02573563]
Points: 16053 Status: Lurker

Yeah I have it. Read it before Punpun. Solanin is the one i
haven’t read yet.

Can you believe I’ve not read 20th? I have the first two
volumes somewhere. I know I have to read it. Have to finish
a Monster first, I’m getting the deluxe edition. Might do
the same with 20th century boys. He did a new one in a
collaboration with the Louvre museum which I haven’t
checked out but keep seeing at my local store.

Not read Tezuka’s Buddha but really want to, that and the
thre Aolphs. Ayako is possibly my fave work by him. If you
haven’t read it I really recommend checking it out.

Have you ever read anything by Clamp?
I got into them thanks to Tokyo Babylon ages ago. Started
reading XXXholic a while ago and love the art.
Some of their work is really girly but stuff like X really
hits the spot. Will they ever finish X? That’s another
question. It’s not the first time they just stop a
project.

books.

Oh and to finish off I was thinking of something in my
library that I loved and would recommend as something rather
different. It was tough but my first choice would be
Stairway to Heaven by Makoto Kobayashi. I don’t even feel
like telling you what it’s about. Might not be available
in English mind you. I ordered it from local bookstore and
when I went to get it the lady tells me (loudly in a full
shop) “sorry it’s banned here becuse of zoophilia
amongst other things. What’s amusing is that it’s a very
heartwarming and lovely story that isn’t deviant in any
way.

I have 3 adolphs (called message to Adolf in the UK) and
it's fantastic and probably my favourite tezuka that I've
read. It's what made me want to read Buddha so much.

I read the first couple of chapters of xxxholic but the fan
translation was dross and made no sense so I'm gonna have to
start it again with the proper books.

Stairway to heaven is not available in English, will have to
look for a fan translation on manga rock!

Speaking of Tezuka and Urasawa, did you read Pluto? If
you’re not aware of it, though I’m sure you are, it’s
Astro, I mean Atom Boy’s story by Urusawa. I’m ashamed
to say I have the first two volumes sitting somewhere that I
haven’t touch. I know it’s somethjng I’ll like which
is why I bought them, just a question of “when?”. I’ve
long stopped buying like that, luckily for me, and for my
flat.

Ace, you’ll dig Ayako I’m sure. I’m gonna read it
again someday coz it really stuck.

Any comics you read again? I’m starting to, and next up is
either Watchmen or From Hell. Maybe the Sandman someday.

I have a short by tezuka you need to read. Not sure what
it’s called in English and I’m lazy right now (using the
phone to type) but it probably has “butterfly” or
“moth” in the title and possible “adventure of I.L”
lol.

By the way I might have mentioned this but I reckon you’d
appreciate Yoshihiro Tatsumi’s stuff.

one! Keep finding shorter, easier to read on the move stuff
instead. I'm suuuuure I've ready some tatsumi but can't
remember what. Will have a gander

Ah sorry to hear that, mo.

As mohamed is here I was thinking of Italian comics.
Obviously Hugo Pratt goes without mentioning and I need to
delve into the Corto Maltese world someday, but
Necron came to mind. I have the books and it’s
oretty much the most unique comic book I have. Very fun,
fantastic lines. The artist behind it is called Magnus.
That’s two very “unitalian” sounding names!

me. I know I need to give Corto another try. It gets
