Arguably he was always a bit prog. I fully expect him
to do some dance spectacular on ice style performance
down the line.

Yeah he was and he used those prog aspects well in his
earlier stuff.

He nearly quit making music after ultravisitor. Perhaps if
he'd heard then how shoebleeder 1 was going to turn he would
have gone through with it.

I think there is a general rule, the more success and money
a musician has, the more generic and less interesting their
music becomes, some people are exceptions to that rule but I
reckon it mostly holds true

So many yes! I don't care if I saw Tom live I'd go
ballistic
He was supposed to close for Mira Calix and Plaid but he was
sick for a bit in the states here. Both acts played longer
in a nice small 500 people venue

boy ultravisitor was Bad. I remember choosing music for a
trip the year it came out and consciously leaving it behind.
I've enjoyed some of his work since then.

Yeah Cancer is very good! Whao wait whut ;)
I was infatuated with tons of rephlex warp skam back in the
day and I guess Mr. Tom just kinda fell through the
cracks....I've seen a few of his things used at the shops
here and there over the years and usually picked them up

back in 2000, when i was gettin into his stuff, i was just
so sure and happy his drum n bass vs acid/idm/acoustic was
the future of dancing music of subculture venues. turned out
it was more like the remnants of rave music refined and
twisted well beyond measuring. the pinnacle of an era not to
be carried on.

I thought ultravisitor was ace, and loved the following two.
Not been so keen on his later stuff. His selected ambient
cbbc works (2018) went pretty much under the
radar!

Ultravisitor & Shobaleader were an attempt to capture. His
sound. He is a vital live musician. If you see him multiple
times live you will understand it is about performance. The
moment. Being a musician, artist is about the moment, place.
Marking a line in the sand. It is easy to be hyper-critical,
but what gratification have you ever given to people?

I thought ultravisitor was mostly "live in the studio" with
crowd and stuff added from a few performances? Didn't
realise it was mostly from one actual show.

mr. tom is the frank zappa of electronic music, imo. he's 43
now and he'll keep making music through his cyborg clone
till at least 150 years old.

i love squarepusher, and i hate him (a little bit).

like most idm fans im in love with the go plastic/do you
know squarepusher era (and im begging for a compilation of
unreleased stuff from warp 20, for instance). but the
beauty of his career is simply this: he does not cater to
fans AT ALL.

it almost seems like he's forcing himself to discard
previous techniques before moving on to the next
albums/projects/whatever.

squarepusher's released 14 full length LPs in 22 years. he's
43 years old now. chances are he'll release 14 full length
LPs the next 22 years, too, all of them wonderfully eclectic
and at least one of them's called warp 20 compilation (or
similar) and contains the crazy super duper bangers *wink,
wink*

once to an old mac site, a woman responded to may
accusations of bjork going a bit contorted (when medulla
came out) saying 'she is a mother'. it reminded me of that,
basically saying romantically they became old, but they
havent been able to keep their music fresh imo.
