back at the beginning of the year, in january or so, i
posted an album of generative stuff made with a max/msp
patch which a few people listened to. this morning i woke
and fiddled with the patch and made it a bit more 'dancey' i
guess but also unpredictable.

you can listen to an album of that stuff here

these are pretty interesting, they sound like they're in the
process of being workshopped into something

I like niootsej

does the patch have realtime control?

I put them on random play, as one does

Yeah every single element is controllable, you can bypass
the generation process and just compose normally and then
add randomisation elements if you like.

or generate something and then tweak it.

Really enjoying these. The one Danza mentioned is actually
one of my lesser favourites.

So is this integrated with Ableton? Or just Max standalone?
I'm wondering how you represent and tweak the data, or enter
it from scratch.

If IDM is composing itself, does that mean we've reached The
Singularityâ„¢?

the moment.

thanks 4 the tech info,
its all midi so u can swap out the instruments easily, yes??
(i don't know max/msp very well)
totally addictive generating tunes like this, i find; its
like 'one more go'!!

Yes exactly, just sends 6 channels of midi out of Max and in
to wherever you have your instruments. In my case they were
all on iPad for this but I could've sent them to some of my
max synths if I wanted.

How did you do the fm stuff? Which korg synth was that?

listening now. i'd be well tempted to generate melodies
(which i struggled with when i was last makimg tracks) and
then fuzzy them with field recorded stuff / found sounds in
wavelab or whatever. liking what i hear though

Thatll be Chiang Mai, part of korg gadget.

belb, I made a similar patch that manipulated samples years
back, I'll have a look for it and see if I can do some
tracks.

personally i think generative/random remix systems are great
as long as they always give u the data in some format that
can be precisely edited at the end. Get so many fun tunes
out of these systems and then you want to string them
together, or go in and change a single pitch somewhere, it's
not happening. Although here it could because u could record
the midi, but the setup is still 4 sheets to the wind.

offline steve mcqueen from caerdydd (United Kingdom) on 2018-09-07 22:47 [#02560704]

But i suppose that is a lot of perceived romance of
generative things - that it is 'in the monent', one off, ...
well yeah, but I want to edit stuff too

BUt if u make a track in the moment and record it and it's
perfect, how is that any different...??? GAH... Heh... uknow

Track titles are randomly generated, 8 characters for one
version of the patch, 16 characters for the other, older
version. The album alternates between the two. They're from
the seed generator I started to make for the patch so you
could repeat songs but ended up not using.

The album title has the word pareidolia in it, every other
character.
