and if you'd buy one from the same company again now.

this isn't data harvesting.

might be a good idea to tell people what you are going to
use it for.

games?
word?
interwebs?

I have a range of laptops to pick from in my little
spreadsheet, I'm just waiting to see apple refreshes and am
just interested in what other people use and whether they
are pleased with their purchase.

Always been happy with Apple. Though take my word with a
pinch of salt as I haven’t owned a PC in a long time.
Appart from the price, and the fact they’re not the
company they used to be humanely speaking, I’m happy.

They’ve been constant innovators, and copied by the greats
because their product is (was) solid. Same goes design wise.

Depends what you want to do with it, I guess.

I use ms office mostly , I scan a lot of shit, and have a
lot of folders, so my MacBook Air (2016) is perfect. Im
still very happy with it, battery lasts 10+ hours and it is
light af. At first OS X felt like a pain, but once I learned
how stuff works, it became more intuitive and faster than on
a win pc. 20 years ago never did I imagine such a machine
could exist. We have come a long way.

Incidentally, with 8gb ram it runs renoise quite well too,
as long as you don’t push it too much.

Also it it has hd 6000 onboard graphics with about 1.5g
vram, so it can run some older 3D titles (like vampire the
masquerade) really well, using bootcamp.

Never had an Apple computer b4 this one. Everyone says this
best thing about it is the trackpad, and I agree. I can’t
believe how crappy tracking is on windows laptops. Keyboard
is good and I touch type like a boss on it. Not sure about
those new flat keys Apple has these days, though.

Design wise I think it looks really nice. I’d like to have
it in black. I think some of the edges are too sharp. It
imprints upon my skin.

I did drop it onto a hard tile floor once and it completely
survived the fall. The metal has a scuff but performance is
unaffected.

You get judged when you have an Apple product. I must say I
do suffer cringe when I watch their keynotes. It’s very
culty. But I can live with that. The machine is good and I
don’t really care about that other stuff. Although I do
think about the poor Chinese sods who put it together.

These days the MacBook pros are like the MacBook airs.

Just think how nice and compact powerful machines will be in
the future.

Anyway, I prob would buy another lightweight laptop from
Apple again but the one I have should last me a while
still.

I also have an old 2012 mid tier gaming laptop. It’s bulky
in comparison. I treat it like a regular pc by not moving it
and plugging in mouse/keyboard/monitor.

Ps copy and pasted this on phone, formatting might be weir

I resigned myself to just get another macbook although I've
been using Max/MSP today on Windows (which was my primary
concern) and not had any issues so I'm torn again, macbook
pros are ridiculously priced these days.

the main thing I look for in a laptop apart from the spec,
is how easy the charger is likely to break, connection etc.
The best thing about the mac I reckon is the magnetic
charging port means you don't break the wire when your
really tired and trip over it which I always do

They've got rid of magsafe charger now though, which is one
of the reasons I'm on the fence. The difference between
windows laptops hardware wise has diminished but the price
has gone up at an accelerated rate to the point you can end
up paying like an extra 700 quid simply for OS X.

Core audio and core midi are so fucking good though.

offline Hyperflake from Wirral (United Kingdom) on 2018-05-30 18:00 [#02553082]
Points: 31006 Status: Lurker

yeah for me id probably get something that wasn't Mac
everytime, the midi stuff doesn't sound good though so I can
see why you would get one, they are generally well built I
must admit

magsafe is great. has saved my comp many a-time. Don’t
know why they would move away from that.

atm I'm saving/dreaming about getting a tower, with a beefy
cpu and a 10-series nvidia graphics card or sth, so I can
experience the world of AAA gaming

hyper: it’s going, life is chaotic atm, for me and
everyone around me. I hope things settle down soon, no more
surprises.

Hope all’s good on your side. I still visit here often,
always nice to see your posts.

macs age well, when you never update anything, after 3-4
years (of stability) it starts to become a good investment,
and its reflected on your user experience

lol just priced out a 15" macbok pro vs 15" thinkpad

macbook: worse processor, lower resolution, worse keyboard,
worse memory, probably worse build quaulity, +$550 (30%)
more expensive! lol!

discrete gfx card in the macbook pro might be a little bit
better, but its radeon =p

meh it won't let me link to a customized version, you'll
have to select the specs yourself: LAZY_TITLE

- i7 8650U
- UHD 3480x2160
- 16GB DDR4 2400mhz
- 256GB SSD
- Geforce MX150 2GB

1850 USD

comparing with the 2.8Ghz macbook model here (2400 USD):

That's what I'm talking about. Prices are insane and even
higher comparatively here in the UK.

Think I'm gonna go with a windows laptop this time around.

apple thingies are ridiculously priced, no denying that.

that said, when I bought the air in 2016 (just yesterday,
come to think of it) - as far as ultrabooks went, things
like the xps 13 and the acers, asuses, lenovos etc were
priced higher. Though they did/do have significantly better
processors etc. The MB air was on the lower end of the price
spectrum with regards to lightweight portable
“ultrabooks”.

I’d definitely think twice about getting a mb pro. If I
were to get a beefier latop, I’d probably get a lenovo (my
2012 laptop is a Lenovo Y580 - bless its ageing heart).

Those razer blade laptops have always been very attractive
to me. Also ridiculously priced.

The razer stealth is pretty.

refurbished Thinkpads, & run em into the ground - even if it
only lasts 6 months, for 200 quid it's worth it

- and then yr all careful with it and don't get proper
usage.

Back years ago, I picked my G4 powerbook from repairs, and
the guy goes, do u want to put it in a bag - yeah. Gets a
bag, holds it out, I put the laptop in, and... it falls
straight through onto the concrete floor! Only fucking
carrier bag i have ever seen where the bottom wasn't fixed
together! It was a bit dented but fine.

started stuttering.

Aha, poor fellow, I’d have stuttered too had that
happened.

I try not to coddle my mb air too much. It is metal after
all, I try not to worry too much. I don’t mind the odd
scratch (or dent even). As long as it works. I did panic
when it fell, though.

Tried a case once, didn’t like it. Felt like it defeated
the purpose.

I got a windows gayming laptop so I could do my VR max
projects on the go. It's ugly as sin but a total beast and
everything works well so far.

I would say it cost me a lot less than a macbook with the
equivalent spec but you can't get a macbook anywhere near
this powerful. It has fully removable hard drives, ram and
wifi card so if I swap the wifi out I can get a perfectly
working hackintosh on the second ssd.

Pretty chuffed.
