Indeksical

Got myself the recent, and rather perfect edition of Akira.
Had never read the comic because I was put off by all the
changes made to “please” westerners back in the day. I
adored the film. Anyway, to finally have the original comic
in its original form was already something quite exciting.
But reading it, wow. So much more to it than in the movie,
and the art hasn’t aged a bit. The pacing is great too.
I’m well impressed. I last saw the anime mid nineties, and
rediscovering it in this manner is rather nice.

About Hino, Panorama of Hell is even better than the Red
Snake, possibly.

Yeah man the manga is one of the few that I think deserves
all the praise it gets. You're right about the pacing too,
doubly impressive given the length of it.

I'll have a look for Panorama of Hell, Hino english
translations are so thin on the ground :(

Tangentially related to comics to but I got Neil Gaiman's
book on Norse mythology yesterday. Have you read it?

Yes, I’m really thrilled reading it (Akira).

Appart from The Sandman I haven’t read Gaiman. I’m not
really into fairy tales, though the Norse thing sounds good.

It's rather good so far, the older versions of Norse
mythology are pretty hardcore.

Was bored in the bookstore today, and suddenly thought of
you and what you said about Goodnight PunPun, so I
ordered the first two volumes. Nothing in store tickled my
fancy except maybe One Punch Man. Didn’t buy it
I’m the end, but it does look fun. Report over.

Oh, I also ordered the first volume of the Herbie
Popnecker. The bits I’ve read are hilarious, and Alan
“grumpy” Moore can’t seem to praise it enough. Seems
like the prefect atypical superhero. Much like One Punch
Man.

Oh man I hope you enjoy punpun, I really love it. I haven't
read any of Popnecker Archives but will check it out.

I've been meaning to start OPM for ages but always get
sidetracked. Have just finished the 20+ volume slog of 20th
Century Boys and it was amazing, I actually felt it needed
longer to wrap up though.

Am reading the one off Image graphic novel Severed as I type
this, very good so far.

Ah 20th century boys I have the first few volumes of, same
with Monster. Stuff I know I have to read but just haven’t
got round to.

Theres a trilogy of movies that are supposed ti be quite
good at getting the main plot and characters across, im
gonna check them out if possible. I enjoyed 20th Century
Boys so much I'm going to buy the new editions that start
coming out in the autumn (I read it illegally).

I'm starting Monster in a few days, just reading a shorter
manga called Blue Heaven about a serial killer on a cruise
ship, it's Ok.

I'm coming very briefly to Geneva next weekend if youre
nearby for a coffee?

Got the first two volumes of Goodnight Punpun (It’s 13
vols like in Japan here, I think viz did it differently).
I’m nearly done with the first volume and can instantly
thank you. I’ve obviously barely scratched the surface
yet, but I can tell this is special.

as to why and what I’m reading atm.

Ha! Glad you're enjoying it, it's really something special.
I think it's so hard to get across this genuine sense of
melancholy and it does it so so well

“Melancholy”. Very well put.

One-Punch Man is really funny, and quite subversive. Lots of
action, which isn’t usually my thing, but it works as the
art is pretty spot on.

next day!

That’s a shame. Next time!

I’m on the wrong device, so I’ll link it later, but I
found a great little documentary that follows Urasawa and
Asana. You see how Asana works, and Urusawa commenting.
It’s pretty cool.

far and there's a lot of themes shared with 20th Century
Boys. Recommended!

I’m running out of episodes to watch. They’re not all
with subs. Junji Ito was great to see, Higashiruma was
really interesting. Igarashi Daisuke was great to see as I
have a few of his works. Today was a bit gutted to find
Usumaru Furuya (I’m a real fan) but not translated. I
remember coming across a comedy series he did, and in one
gag a women trying to diet see the trademark smiley aphex
when she wants to eat. Something like that. Ah hang on
it’s surely out there. What I love with this guy
is that his style and subject matters vary greatly.

Ah yeah I already have a third of Monster in my collection,
it’s something I bought when I saw it in the shop because
know I have to read it. Same with 20th which I have started.
Once I’ve finished PunPun, I’ll attack Monster. A bit
disappointed at finding out a spoiler regarding Goodnight
Punpun, ah well. Got the first four volumes, and purposely
reading it really slowly.

It's a panel from the comic, I'll try find a link.

I'm reading "soil" at the moment. Have you read it? Kooky
small town murder mystery, I'm enjoying it a lot so far.

Looks like this could be my cup of tea. I have so much to
read though. My librarian said Gantz was pretty good. I need
to finish Punpun and Monster before anything.

Read the Superman stories Alan Moore wrote again. I have all
three compiled in a pretty cool book. I enjoyed the second
reading far better, and wish there was more. I’ve yet to
give Promethea a go, and really want to have a crack at his
Swamp Thing. One of the Superman stories features Swamp
Thing, who actually saves him. All 3 stories have to do with
his weaknesses, which I enjoyed. The main piece is about his
demise. Other than that I’m pretty clueless on Superman
comics, and with pretty much all superhero comics.

It's gotten weirder and weirder, I think you'll like it.

I've read Gantz, it's puerile, juvenile nonsense but the art
is so so good and the i love the monster design. I think
Inuyashiki by the same author is far better (and isn't 100
issues too long), it's about a sad old salary man who gets
squashed by aliens and has his brain put in the body of a
super robot filled with weapons and with the power to cure
disease.

I shed the blood of th Saxon man!

I’ll never see that tee then... what are ya reading?

I’ve just read a load of short stories about a woman (and
mostly her clients) who can more or less make her clients
orgasm as she ever so delicately cleans their ears with a
bamboo stick made for that purpose called Mimikaki,
and it’s by I’m author I’m discovering called Yaro
Abe. He’s from the Garo era which I’m mildly
obsessed with.

Yeah I'm shit at doing stuff, sorry!

I've heard of Abe, midnight dinner, but not mimikami. I'll
have a gander.

I've read nothing but crap recently, thought I'd try to read
stuff I hadn't heard of going on description alone and its
been pure disappointment. Then I tried to read Harem End by
Kago Shintaro and the only version I could find was so
heavily censored that there were chunks of 3 or 4 pages in a
row that were blurred out!

Dunno what to read next to be honest.

1960s absurd manga drawn in pen. What’s not to like?

This thread is very yellow.

Ordered this. Shame it’s not translated in
English. There’s this French publisher of comics and manga
that I’m a real fan of and I’m surprised more or less
none of their back catalogue has been translated. Seems that
some French publishers are more daring with the material
they tackle.
le lézard noir.

I wanted to link you to google images of chiisakobe but for
some reason I can’t. Check the art out, it’s pretty
unique and gives off a weird feeling. Big change since
Dragon Head. Loved Tokyo Kaido but insee that hasn’t been
translated either.

Rambling over.

UK and US. Would love some on other parts of the world.
