Recommended Weird Cinema

only best movies of the Weird

Evolution (2015), a French movie that's like a mashup of
Shadow Over Innsmouth and The Shape of Water, with a touch
perhaps of The Man Who Fell To Earth. Keywords: slow,
dreamy, pensive, eerie, atmospheric, symbolic.

Makes a good Weird Cinema double feature with When Animals
Dream (2014), which is also recommended and shares some of
the mood, concerns, and plot trajectory of Evolution.

I thought of “Happiness” today, I wouldn’t mind seeing
that again. Not weird per se. Are you talking about Holy
Mountain (Jodorowsky) weird, Goonies weird, baffling weird?

“slow, dreamy, pensive, eerie, atmospheric, symbolic”

Ok I’ll have a think!

I can’t not mention twin peaks, especially the masterpiece
that is season 3. Meant as an 18 hour film, I’ve happily
watched it twice, and look forward to a third viewing. Just
thinking about season 3 as I type gives me the tingles!

I have Get Out, waiting for the right mood to strike me. I
get the impression it's going to be gruelling. Post Tenebras
Lux looks good, will see if I can hunt it down.

Happiness is almost what I'm thinking of in terms of mood,
it has an otherworldliness despite no "weird" (as in occult)
elements. Have you seen Palindromes?

In the schema I'm thinking of, all horror and ghost stories
are weird, but not all weird stories are horror and ghost
stories.

I guess what I have in mind by weird is an artsy weird, not
necessarily full tilt buckets of blood, tentacles and
ectoplasm, but maybe hints of it, or even a bucket or two
but more of a focus on mood and character. Lynch definitely
qualifies. Cronenberg hits the weird notes often, especially
in his older films. Suspiria qualifies as weird despite
being a full on horror movie. It's the dream / nightmare
quality. Also yes, Holy Mountain.

I like the sound of Evolution. Any tips where to view?

Weirdest but most rewarding film I have seen lately was
Hard to be a god

Evolution is on Canadian Netflix now, so you could try that
with a proxy. Or, I just checked and 1337x has some torrents
with seeders.

I will try that movie but I admit I find Russian cinema...
challenging. Still, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Umbro, good tip, that site has the goods. lots of seeders,
crazy. For a while there were all these kat clones but they
were either frozen static snapshots of the past, or total
scams.

if You haven’t seen seen TP then the ride towards season 3
is worth it. I can’t stress enough how good season 3 is.

Yes Cronenberg is ace. Shivers, and Rabid ae great, and were
rather influential. I rem something about a journalist
asking him if he realised he ripped off Alien. This was
after a (much) later screening. I could imagine Cronenberg
coming in his head as he “reminded” the journalist that
Shivers was done before. Anyway one of the reasons Alien was
a work of art is because it was being made at the right time
with the right elements, and influences. Giger, who himself
was clearly influenced by early Francis Bacon paintings for
example. Possibly a perfect line of influences dating back
to Egyptian times up until then etc fuck

I just picked up the "Evolution" DVD on my lunchbreak in
Milton Keynes's branch of "Cex" for a mere £2, a woman (a
most unlikely looking sort) in the queue behind me commented
that it was a very good film. Uncharitably I thought that
she looked like she might have been in it. I look forward to
watching that tonight.

If anyone's interested I also picked up "Lost Highway"
(weird cinema) and "Doom - Extended Version" (not weird
cinema but one of my guilty pleasures) for 50p. I had also
selected "My Bloody Valentine 3D" but the man-boy behind the
till said they'd lost the glasses for it so couldn't sell it
as the goods weren't as described, the tools!

I noticed a lot of skin problems in that shop, both in front
and behind the till. Yes, I have washed my hands.

Don't look too closely in the mirror tonight because I think
you'll find you've acquired the Milton Keynes Look.

BTW I thought this was amusing (trigger warning:
reddit)

rustledust: you've titillated me into trying Twin Peaks
again... I'm in a "takes advice from people" mood lately, a
friend has me watching Channel Zero which is not bad at all,
season 3 (each season is standalone) has kind of a Phantasm
vibe I think. But yes, Twin Peaks, Officer Pie and all that,
looks good, even if Lynch totally copied True Detective.

I have to re-watch Gummo one of these days. Not sure how it
will hold up. The first time I watched it I walked around in
a daze for a week feeling like civilization had collapsed.

Hausu is great. In two words: kawaii Suspiria

On my watch list right now: Walkabout, The Last Wave, The
Quiet Earth.

I have Walkabout on bluray, one of my favourites - also
watch if.... .. it isn't "weird" but it gets surreal at
times, and also is great.

I watched The Quiet Earth end of last year for the first
time, it's bloody great. Though *spoiler* the posters for
the film fucking gives it away, though it doesn't really
matter - it's the journey. There's some great scenes and
Bruno Lawrence is fantastic (didn't he co-write it as well?)
I don't know what put me on to it as I hadn't heard of it
before, .,,,, OH I KNOW, I watched that fucking awful Bokeh
and people said it was a shit version of The Quiet Earth. It
doesn't even deserve to be mentioned in the same breath.

Sorry about follow up to Marlow, I was originally going to
say that I like "if..." as well and that whole Lyndsay
Anderson, Malcolm McDowell trilogy (I need to watch
Britannia Hospital again, probably quite timely?!!?). And
that, despite being a big Nic Roeg, Jenny Agutter fan, I
have never seen Walkabout, and this is something I must
remedy soonest.

effect on me the opening scene

Got a copy of Quiet Earth, very stoked to watch it tonight.
Haven't seen it before though it's one of those things I've
almost watched forever.

Walkabout is indeed great, I think it counts as weird
because of the uncanny mood, isolation, juxtaposition of
differing senses of reality, and so forth.

For me, weird cinema may or may not have fantastic or horror
elements but is broadly like the definition of
slipstream fiction: "the best way to understand
slipstream is to think of it as a state of mind or a
particular approach, one that is outside of all
categorisation. ... slipstream induces a sense of
'otherness' in the audience, like a glimpse into a
distorting mirror... In general it imparts a sense that
reality might not be quite as certain as we think."

I think "If" would probably count there, though I've not
seen it, just going by descriptions. Another one that might
fit is The Ruling Class with Peter O'Toole. That is a weird,
weird watch.

I went to a screening of O Lucky Man, just after Lyndsay
Anderon died, where Alan Price sang beforehand and
afterwards there was a panel with Malcom Mcdowell and David
Sherwin so yes, you might say that I've fucking seen O
Lucky Man
, chum.

And Britannia Hospital.

I love O Lucky Man, great film - not so keen on Britannia
Hospital, was just more depressing and early 80s UK grimy
than anything else.

A recent(ish) film that was great and very unusual is Under
the Skin, but I imagine you've seen it already. If not, get
in.
