do you DJ? what do you use? i think i might become a DJ,
seems like a good way to force yourself to constantly listen
to new music.

seems like theres loads, every shit dance festival or club i
go to has mediocre djs playing completely uninspired sets
from lunchtime until dawn for days straight. only difference
being the colour of their usb sticks.

i think if i find a ridiculous niche i could make some beer
money playing for the chin stroker crowd and debase myself
in a slightly more palatable way

Put on a night somewhere, i guess you'll have to promote it
aswell which will be horrible, but it should be a laugh even
if only 4 people turn up!

I think there are niches that you could get into more easily
than others, if you want to compromise your integrity - eg.
Blue Note jazz nights, stuff like that.

it's definitely a great way to keep updated with music. but
it can also be a bit disappointing because people generally
get off to straightforward 4/4 stuff and aren't very open
for anything different. you can always throw some weirder,
adventurous stuff in but it has to loosely fit the 4/4
frame. that's the simple way if you want to build up a night
(unless you're in london). good side of that is there's
plenty of very decent 4/4 music (very different to beatport
charts) that gets totally overlooked by most djs, probably
because it takes some effort to find it. but once you do,
you can make straightforward sets pretty exciting and you
will get nice response from people. once you get regulars
with that, you can gradually break them in into less
conventional dance music.

you can always start a night with unconventional stuff of
course. how that would work out depends a lot of the city
you dj in though. in a city with strong electronic club
scene that's obviously easier. it also depends ob club
owners. some might be against straightforward stuff, but
generally they're just interested in having a packed club,
so one way or another you will have to somewhat compromise
your selection to keep the people happy.

also, once you get them dancing and they're spaced out, you
can afford to play a lot of weird shit and they will love
you for it hehe
